The Knicks have officially signed second-round pick Miles McBride, the team’s PR department tweets.
McBride, the 36th overall pick, was acquired in a draft-night trade with the Thunder. The 6’2” guard averaged 15.9 PPG, 4.8 APG and 1.9 SPG in 29 games last season with West Virginia. He also made 41.4% of his 3-point attempts. McBride played two seasons with the Mountaineers.
Terms were not disclosed, but the team has ample cap room to sign McBride to a contract that covers three or four seasons. McBride is currently on the Knicks’ summer league squad.
He’s got a long reach. And was a football star in HS. Hence his toughness and plays D. He’s got good vision and is a playmaker. But needs to run an offense. And learn to manage it and manage a gm. His shot is tight off the dribble or open. He can start one day. He will learn a lot from Kemba and Rose. He’s better than Quickley. Like our two guards a lot (picks). They play both ways.
What I love about the guy is he’ll always spring for the sweet potato fries even though it’s usually $1 extra. He knows what he wants and takes it. The question is how he’ll navigate the NY casual dining scene and whether covid impacts his game.
What’s also encouraging is his improvement from his freshman year to his sophomore year. His freshman year was poor shooting and not much else. Vastly improved his shot and passing game in year two.
McBride was the only PG I wanted the NYK to take in the draft. I wanted the PG issue addressed with vets. Regardless McBride was such a perfect fit for us there was no way we could or should pass him up if he fell out of the 1st round. Looking at our depth chart, I could see him having a path to some PT as a rookie, based on his defense (and that of the vet PGs on the roster).
So you weren’t interested in Suggs? Cunningham? Mitchell?
How could we get them ???? You should look at game when he went up against Mitchell.
You got me! I should have prefaced it by saying assuming none of those 3 fall to #19 or another spot we could rationally trade up to. Suggs and CC I might have irrationally traded up for. Suggs was my preferred Knick target before last season when we looked like a lock to have a high lottery pick.
McBride is a couple years younger than Mitchell and if you look at McBride’s profile now, it would track what Mitchell’s was prior to last season. I wouldn’t have traded up for Mitchell beyond using #19 and #21. In the end, we might be better off with the guy we got. McBride didn’t focus exclusively on basketball until college.
What a steal by the Knicks. McBrides better than Quickley
