AUGUST 6: The Suns have officially acquired Shamet from the Nets in exchange for Carter and the rights to Day’Ron Sharpe, the team announced in a press release.
JULY 29: The Nets have agreed to trade sharpshooter Landry Shamet to the Suns in exchange for Jevon Carter and the No. 29 pick in Thursday’s draft, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
As a result, Brooklyn now owns the 27th, 29th, 44th, 49th and 59th picks in the 2021 draft. Carter, a 6’1″ point guard, will provide backcourt depth behind the likes of Kyrie Irving and James Harden, assuming he stays with the team.
Phoenix wasn’t interested in using the No. 29 pick on a player who likely wouldn’t have played much, preferring to add a more proven veteran to the mix, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 tweets. The Suns are coming off their first NBA Finals berth since 1993 and third berth in franchise history.
Suns coach Monty Williams is a strong supporter of Shamet, dating back to when he coached him as an assistant with the Sixers, Wojnarowski notes (via Twitter). The 24-year-old Shamet averaged 9.3 points per game in 61 contests last season, shooting 41% from the floor and 39% from three-point range.
As ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (via Twitter), the trade won’t be completed until August 6 at the earliest. Shamet’s salary will increase from $2MM to $3.76MM for next season, while Carter will make $3.65MM in 2021/22. Shamet also becomes eligible for a rookie-scale extension on August 6.
Carter has negative value – relatively
Contract 2 year $8m remaining
Suns save $4.2 million
Brooklyn needs to fill out its roster with rookies I’m guessing? 5 picks in this draft and all 27 or later…I know they can’t sign any real player but is this their actual strategy? I get it but at the same time oof that’s a lot of late picks to be your 9-14 spots on the roster, claxton should be a very good starting center on their type of roster next year, I hope, got a bunch of his rookie cards I’d like to get rid of ya feel
Makes sense for both teams
agreed.
Good trade for both teams.
I like this move for suns. Shamet added another shooter to the roster.
Shamet is always getting traded
Nice pickup for Suns. They get a young vet to strengthen their bench. A guy who will get mins next yr. Where 27 pick will not. Gotta bring back CP3.
Landry looked good in the playoff. If Payne signs elsewhere they have some insurance! I don’t think the Nets are near done. Now they have picks to move Jordan.
Nets are better off trading up for a player who falls. Early 20s can get a nice rotation player. They can move Jordan at trade deadline.
Jevon Carter won’t last in Brooklyn
Good move for both, particularly BKN. Carter is a great fit. An animal on the defensive end. He’ll be a great partner off the bench with Bruce Brown, if they can resign him.
I could see them trading one or both of the 1st’s for future 1st’s, or using one to get rid of Jordan’s salary. Marks has proven he knows how to create draft capital from whole cloth. Had to learn, I guess, being hired in the aftermath of the Garnett trade.
I HOPE that Rose & Co. are taking some notes on this. Yes, believe it or not, you can trade players for picks, and current picks for future picks, EVEN IF you’re in win now mode and don’t plan to actually use the picks. All of it can be done in lieu of giving picks away to move up a few spots.
Why has Shamet been traded so many times?
Sixers
Clippers
Nets
Suns
Got value lol
When you want him, he’s a young, cheap, rotation player with a premium skill set (shooting) and some position flexibility. When you have him, he’s an easily identifiable trade asset, with a limited skill set, defensive deficiencies and no real position. Basically, he’s a vacation home.
Solid pickup for Suns
Nets just want a bunch of minimal contracts around their big 3 on max deals
Does Shamet get traded every year on draft night? Lol
Also, nets getting Javon Carter is a big deal. Really addresses one of their issues. Although if the uh never use him, that obviously doesnt matter, as we’ve seen
PLEASE trade Carter to Boston! WVU and Boston are my teams!
