August 24: The Pacers have made the two-way signing of Jarreau official, per a team press release. The club also confirmed that Brimah has been waived in a corresponding move.
August 21: Free agent guard DeJon Jarreau will sign a two-way contract with the Pacers, a source tells Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files.
Jarreau had an impressive performance with the Heat‘s Summer League team and was considered a strong candidate to sign with Miami. However, it wasn’t clear if the Heat were planning a two-way or Exhibit 10 deal for Jarreau, so he intends to take the offer from Indiana.
Jarreau, 23, is coming off a Final Four season with Houston in which he was named Defensive Player of the Year in the American Athletic Conference and the Most Outstanding Player in the Midwest Regional. He joined the Heat after going undrafted and put up 11.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game in Las Vegas.
The Pacers already have a two-way deal in place with rookie shooting guard Duane Washington, so Jarreau would fill the other slot. Amida Brimah technically holds that spot for now, but Indiana doesn’t intend to bring him back. A qualifying offer to Cassius Stanley, who played 24 games last season, was withdrawn last week. It would have amounted to another two-way contract with a $50K guarantee.
wtf? I thought it was a done deal with the Heat already?
What???
According to everything that has ever been reported on this site, Amida Brimah was going into the second year of his two-way contract with Indiana. Now, all of a sudden, it looks like there was actually a team option that was not exercised and he’s a UFA?
He’s still technically on that contract but it sounds like he’s not in the Pacers’ plans and will be cut when they sign Jarreau (updated the story to make that clear).
Sounds like the Heat were too slow here, good signing by Indiana.
This isnt the first time the Heat messed up a summer situation, but it ls possibly the most shocking one. My guess is the 2nd 2 way probably goes to Javonte Smart or RJ Nembhard now…I’m actually mad. Paul Millsap is still sitting out there, while they picked Markieff Morris, and they’re not going to fill in the wing spot at all. Should have been Millsap and Ntilikina over Morris and Vincent, if the 15tb spot wasnt going to be filled, and I cant believe there is a universe where Garrett and Jarreau weren’t instantly signed by the Heat, and this is that universe. Essentially, Oladipo is a lot more important now…
Jarreau did not want to risk an exhibit10 contract. Reasonable.
The point was they should have offered him the 2 way deal outright. Garrett and Jarreau were the obvious picks for that before summer league even started, and then reaffirmed that by what we saw…makes zero sense they didnt sign them as soon as possible
The Pacers better hope DeJon will cut the mustard for them.
Yeah I know it was a bad pun, but I am a little tipsy right now so I enjoyed it. Have a drink, maybe you will too.
Sounds wingy!
Good move for IND, for MIA… not so much!
IMO it’s not that big of a loss for the HEAT. Jarreau was good, but these long, scrappy types are common fare in the undrafted pile.
Garrett is of the same mold and should get the first 2-way spot. then the HEAT should look for another shooter-specialist to develop.
Fans wouldn’t complain if they have another Robinson, Strus type in the pipeline.
It is clearly time for the great one, Pat Riley, to enjoy his retirement and step down. Anyone who thinks this team is a top contender has it wrong, the press is lauding their moves but they amount to a possible playoff or play-in berth but that’s it.
As a Heat fan, it is hard to see Jarreau go.
It will be interesting to watch Jarreau and Garrett’s careers and see how they develop and produce.
While it is disappointing to see Jarreau get signed by the Pacers, we need to remember that the Heat organization has had opportunities to evaluate and compare Jarreau & Garrett behind the scenes in training camp, practices and in the locker room in ways we don’t.
Let’s just hope the Heat organization made the right call in choosing Garrett over Jarreau. Time will tell!
There is zero reason they couldn’t have kept both. I dont really understand this post
Why does the Pacers news always appear under Celtics news?
