The Raptors have signed Scottie Barnes to his first NBA contract, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports.
The Florida State forward was something of a surprise pick at No. 4, but Toronto was attracted to his potential to be a difference-maker on defense. He was named ACC Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year during his lone season with the Seminoles, averaging 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Assuming he gets 120% of the rookie scale, Barnes will make $7.28MM during his first season. His contract could be worth up to $33MM over four years.
Barnes will play his first Summer League game later today, Lewenberg adds.
I really hope this works out for both the Raptors and Barnes. I like both of them but I think Toronto will regret passing on Suggs
Thanks for kuminga idiots. I never understood the love for Toronto gm. He got lucky when pop didn’t want to trade Khawi into the western conference. Besides that what has he done?
Let’s go baby. Barnes jersey incoming
Curious to see if they let him get some looks at PG in super lengthy, versatile lineups. When I was catching up on players this guy was an obvious favorite. I love how he plays
Lets go Scottie!!!
Interested to see what Barnes can do in the NBA. Very unusual skill set.
Ujiri has a pretty good eye for talent. While his draft record is somewhat mixed, he’s never had a pick this high. I think 9th (Poeltl) was the highest before this year. Passing up Suggs went against consensus. Although it was a soft consensus, I always take note of those situations.
Not big on Barnes like most. And it’s crazy to say they took him for his D, over Suggs. What ??
He’s very coordinated for his size. And can do a lot of things. But he doesn’t do anything really well. Kind of reminds me of Bulls passing on Aldridge and taking Thomas. A guy many thought was what Scottie will be. I don’t pass on Suggs for that. Barnes to me should of gone 10-14
Crazy how people forget that the raptors are the best at developing talent. Suggs might be pro-ready now, but just imagine if you’re patient with a dude like Scottie Barnes. He is what the NBA is trending towards & I believe he has way more potential than OG(and OG is extremely underrated, can be a borderline all star).
Midsize guy lacking skills, like Doomtooya picked in the middle by DET. The middle is a better place to draft the unskilled. Maybe Ujiri prefers the diamond-in-the-rough slot.
