5:40pm: The Sixers have officially waived Hill, announcing the move in a press release.
12:12am: The Sixers are planning to waive veteran guard George Hill, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Hill, acquired by Philadelphia at the trade deadline in March, is currently under contract for 2021/22 with a cap hit of $10.05MM. However, only about $1.28MM of that salary is guaranteed, so the Sixers can save some money and generate a little extra cap flexibility by releasing him before his salary guarantee deadline this week.
Hill, who began the 2020/21 season with Oklahoma City, averaged 8.7 PPG and 2.4 APG on .482/.388/.800 shooting in 30 total contests (22.4 MPG) for the Thunder and Sixers. He didn’t make much of an impact in the postseason for Philadelphia, with just 4.7 PPG and 1.5 APG in 12 playoff games (17.1 MPG).
While Hill wasn’t exactly a bargain on his $10MM salary, he’d be a worthwhile investment at a lower rate. If and when he clears waivers, he should receive interest from teams looking to add an affordable veteran guard to their bench.
76ers did nothing so far
Same with my Celtics…although I am not upset the Celtics didn’t give Fournier the deal he got from the Knicks
76ers still have $5 million tax room to sign one of Danny Green or Mike Scott
Danny Green likes Heat
Heat offered part of MLE to Tucker
Sign and trade?
Sixers are waiving a guy so they can fit the 12 guys they’ll get from the Warriors for Ben Simmons. They need the roster space and cap room so Hill is out.
That cap room will be useful in signing all of the future 1sts Golden State will be sending as well. I’m thinking 15-20 future 1sts plus the 12 players might get the deal done.
Hill to Lakers for vet minimum
I’m not sure that scooping up all the guys who were unplayable in the Atlanta series is the best plan for filling out the Lakers roster but while you’re at it why not sign Mike Scott too?
Who would you rather have? Rubio @ $17 mil minus Taurean Prince or Hill at what would probably be less than $5 mil?
Hill.he still a very good bench player.i like rubio more then hill but to expensive for an injury prone player
I was going to say Cleveland might be an option for him
I could see him fitting in Dallas or LA, as backup catch and shoot options at the guard spot that can defend when used right. In LA only when at least 1 of LeBron or Davis is on the floor, and with Dallas, obviously Doncic
Literally the entire reason he was traded for was to pair him and/or Seth Curry with at least 1 of Simmons and Embiid at all times, and they had both on the floor without either of them so often lol.
Hill should go back to the Bucks. They’re in need of a backup point
Would make sense going back to the bucks. Hill was lights out from three for them, would be a good back up point guard for them. Could even get some larger minutes with Tucker gone
And yet another useless player with a bad contract
Sixers traded a quality backup center for this turd
Hill looked like he belonged in the women’s basketball league last year my God talk about losing a step.
Man sixers FO failing hard. They’re valuing Simmons like a top 5-10 player, gonna be stuck with him, dude is not willing to do what it takes to improve the team (work on his effing shot). No signings so far, it’s sad.
See I was upset that they didn’t use Danny Greens salary for a trade during the season. And now I’m disappointed they’re just gonna waive Hill, instead of using his salary to aquire a piece or 2.
But exactly what did you expect them to do on day 1 of free agency with no cap space. They have the tax payers mid level exception, probably be a week or 2 before they use that.
And they’re valuing Simmons like they should.Lillard hasn’t been traded.Beal hasn’t been traded.Only player traded that ya might’ve considered dealing Simmons for is Westbrook.Simmons for Beal,Simmons for Lillard,or Simmons stays. They’re a 1 seed chasing a chip,Collin Sexton don’t take them there.
At least the 76ers acknowledged their mistake. He was awful. I really thought there was going to be a roster makeover. Not happening. Not sure if Morey really understands that he is selling low with regards to Simmons. Worse, Simmons is giving off vibes he wants out. They’re not getting Beal or Lillard for him. They may not even be the fourth best team in the conference right now. Disastrous off-season for the 76ers.
Pry gonna bring him back vet min
Lots of comments on an article about a washed up backup point guard. Guess I’ll add another. He’d be good pickup for the Power to back up Cutting Mobley as Hill probably could knock down the 4 pointers and run the pick and roll.
Guess they’re over the Hill
He’ll get picked up. Bucks ?
This is the kind of player every team should be after.. a depth 3-D that isn’t expensive and knows his role without demands… whoever signs him (or Danny Green for the same reasons) will be better for it.
I’ll take D Green for minimum on Knicks. Yes sir
Sorry brother.. the Knicks are behind the Lakers, Bucks, Nets, and Heat on the totum pole… whether you accept it or not lol
