AUGUST 7: The Sixers have officially re-signed Green, the team announced today in a press release.
“Bringing Danny back was a top priority for our organization this offseason,” president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said in a statement. “He has proven to be an important leader on and off the floor, and he knows what it takes to win an NBA title as a three-time champion. We are very happy that he’ll continue to remain a crucial part of the 76ers.”
AUGUST 4: The Sixers have agreed to terms with veteran swingman Danny Green on a two-year deal that will bring him back to Philadelphia, according to his Inside The Green Room podcast co-host Harrison Sanford (Twitter link). A league source confirms the news to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein (Twitter link).
Because the 76ers have Early Bird rights on Green, they won’t need to use their mid-level exception to complete the signing.
Agent Raymond Brothers tells ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link) that the 34-year-old’s new deal won’t include any options. However, a follow-up tweet from Sanford suggests the second year will be non-guaranteed, with a July 1, 2022 guarantee date.
According to Sanford (Twitter link), Green had discussions with the Nets, Celtics, Bucks, Bulls, and Warriors, among other teams, during free agency this week. He turned down a two-year offer from the Cavaliers, Sanford adds.
A 12-year NBA veteran who has won titles with three different teams, Green started all 69 games he played for Philadelphia in 2020/21, averaging 9.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 1.3 SPG with a .412/.405/.775 shooting line in 28.0 MPG.
Green has long been a reliable three-and-D wing, having knocked down 40.1% of his career attempts from beyond the arc.
The Sixers waived George Hill this week and lost Dwight Howard to the Lakers, but have now lined up deals to bring back both Green and Furkan Korkmaz. The club also signed Andre Drummond to a minimum-salary contract on Wednesday and has agreed to a deal with forward Georges Niang.
Good. He’s not the guy he was a few years ago but he is still a productive player, and we saw how immense the drop off was from him to Shake and Korkmaz in the playoffs. I’m ok with this.
Bob out struck out so much he should just join the mlb
Bib myers
Bob myers*… I’ll see myself out
Watched him for a year in LA. Would have easily taken him back. Good team guy.
if they used early bird rights to sign Green, second year can’t be a team option — it can be non-guaranteed though. I believe they can technically “downgrade” him to non-Bird rights and not exceed 120% of his previous salary, and make the second year a true option… we’ll see
I am correct again
2 year $20 million
Just like with Chris Paul, even though just $75M was guaranteed money.
I’m glad we resigned him over trying to replace him. He need some veteran 3 and D guys and although he isn’t as he was he’s still decent.
However wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up trading him at some point during the offseason or season. Talking about trades my idea of Simmons for LaVine looks very unlikely following them getting two non shooters in Ball and DeRozan.
I’d still take McCollum, RoCo, Greg Brown and 2 future firsts for Simmons, Green and Joe.
For the blazers you’d have a future star after dame and an elite defender in Ben. Plus Green would be a great fit.
I’d also be looking at Swipa the Fox or possibly even Dloading.
I wouldn’t. That’s a horrible trade for the 76ers. McCollum is 30, small SG, horrible defender and has 1 good skill… Shooting. Shooters can be had easy and younger if that’s all the 76ers are looking for in a trade for Ben.
RoCo is getting old and slow and is relegated to being a PF now, which wouldn’t mesh with Tobias. It’d be better just to keep Green than get RoCo.
Not sure why you or the 76ers would want Greg Brown. He’s a 2nd round very raw project that wouldn’t even crack the 76ers rotation. Seems like a useless throw in, just to add Joe into the trade going back, who would be better to just keep.
The 1st rounders are nice but they’re later 1st rounders and not nice enough to entice the 76ers considering they’d be giving up the 3 better players compared to what they’d be getting back.
This sounds like a trade Blazers fans would make. Go on BlazersEdge and make that proposal. You’d give them wet dreams.
Too true, too true, SportsBum!
You giving Ben for almost nothing there, CJ is a great shooter & that is about all, Ben does it all but shoot, which in my book has gazillions more value than just shooting!
So not true, McCollum is one of the leagues best ball handlers aswell as a solid shooter. Although he’s not an all star he’s played at a near all star level for years now. RoCo isn’t old and slow he’s still one of the leagues better defenders and still shoots a handy percentage from deep. Having a starting 5 of Maxey McCollum RoCo Harris and Embiid would be tough.
However you are right about McCollums poor defence and it would be risky sending away a young Simmons for two older blokes in McCollum and RoCo. But compared to other suggestions like Brogdan, Siakim or Buddy Heild I’d easily rather something like this.
As for the last part with Brown for Joe, it’s only cause we have loads of young back up guards (Milton, Curry, Springer, Maxey, Thybulle, Korkmaz and so on). Whereas we don’t have much at back up PF or C. Personally I’d rather Browns potential over having Joe as a 4th choice player that might get 10 games a season off the bench.
However you probably are right on second thought, Blazers fans would love this idea and for my Sixers we would probably not be getting enough in return. I just really want to see us add a really talent guard and not just picks and crap or a PF or something
RoCo is a PF. He is getting old and slow. That’s why his last 3 teams have played him at PF/C. He’s no longer a great defender against SFs. Could he do it? Sure but not very good note better than Green. Green plays a position of need and is a better player than RoCo. That’s dumb to even include them 2 in the trade scenario.
Same with Greg Brown, who again, is probably more of a 4 who you say you don’t want, for Joe who fits a position of need.
This trade is really bad… Really really bad. The 76ers would be downgrading at every player for player in the trade.
McCollum isn’t that good of a ball handler. That’s just wrong. He’s legit a very good shooter and nothing else. Ball handling also isn’t a plus for McCollum for the 76ers because the 76ers already have better ball handlers than McCollum. McCollum is essentially an undersized, more consistent shooting Tobias. Although what Tobias lacks in shooting compared to McCollum, he makes up for in probably every other area.
If the 76ers are selling Ben off for this trash, they’d be better off going young for Heild, or Brogdan, which is exactly what Morey has been requesting. Either an all star (CJ never has been at 30) and picks or several of a teams best young players and picks.
Philly don’t want this…but the media has pushed it all summer.
Better, but that’s pretty much all Lillard is too tho (shooter), and 76ers would love to have him.
@jump shot The difference is Lillard is elite in them things and he provides better all around scoring than Mccollum. Mccollum is strictly a spot up shooter. He rarely drives the lane and doesn’t generate enough contact. Lillard does and he’s a much bet better ball handler and passer than McCollum. McCollum isn’t a good passer either. McCollum literally has 1 valuable skill that’s overrated to some fans. It’s why he’s never been an all star.
I like CJ, but not in a trade for Ben- as someone previously mentioned, CJ is a good shooter/scorer, but no help on defense; and we have Seth Curry, who can shoot the lights out and he makes about 1/3 of what CJ makes.
If the 76ers trade Simmons to Portland, it will probably be with a couple of 1st rd picks and a couple of younger 76ers, either Maxey, Springer,I.Joe, or maybe even Matisse Thybulle (although I’d try to avoid including Thybulle if at all possivle.
@Simmons… Boy if you call Zo a non-shooter, when he makes them at a 38%… you really have very high standards, as people like Beal, Ice Trae, D-Book & so on… aren’t shooters neither as they don’t reach those %, right?
Simmons was 30% from 3 this year but that doesn’t make him slightly below average from three does it.
Lonzo isnt a natural shooter, he’s a pass first point guard, likes to play fast on the break and defensively is great. He’s definitely improved his shooting and in the future could be a shooter but for now he just isn’t.
When I said he isn’t a shooter either I was referring to the bulls possibly planning on building around Simmons. By shooter I meant Seth Curry, Buddy Heild, Tim Hardaway, etc etc. Lonzo is obviously be brought in to build around LaVine
Lakers should’ve brought back lonzo instead of the mess they’ve created out west
Lonzo shoots over 37% from 3 with 8 attempts a game… he’s been a pretty good 3pt shooter for more than two years now..
Ya honestly, when rumors came out about him and other teams a couple of days ago, it was confusing to me how they would let him go, and the idea of him not making certain money for what he brings, and how many teams need someone like him. His injury was a big part of how they lost, considering how Doc Rivers doesnt know who plays for his team
Didn’t this guy talk smack on the fans? This should go over well
Blown out of proportion…His comments were pretty tame (and spot on)…it will only upset the drunk fans and the talk radio crowd…so yeah…many of them lol
You sure about that? Dude has been here a year and he’s talking about how we should be more “positive” and create and better atmosphere for the players.
We’re supposed to go “easy” on Ben Simmons and to passively accept one of the most
embarrassing playoff performances and one of the worst playoff exists this city has ever seen? The fans that were there every step of the way only to see you get your asses kicked 3 games on your home floor by the Atlanta Hawks!?
Since when does a player say how the fans should or shouldn’t react? This coming from a guy who rode the coattails of legends in San Antonio and he thinks he knows the pulse of the city?
Pretty tame and spot on? How about completely clueless
Ok, firstly everyone rode the coattails of legends in SA. That’s not a fair criticism to levy, especially when there is nobody who has ever claimed Danny Green to be like this all world player. Also, if not for an unbelievable shot, there is a legit chance he has a finals MVP to his name.
Secondly, as someone who lived in Philly for the first 30 years of my life, he’s not wrong.
I’ve lived in this town most of my 40 years on this earth as well and sorry, I don’t need players telling the fans how they should or shouldn’t react just to make them feel better and/or more “accepted”.
My Spurs point has more to do with the fact that he played most of his career for that town and team. Totally different atmosphere, environment and success.
Sorry Danny, you don’t get to lecture how the fans should or shouldn’t react. Doesn’t work like that
He’s perfectly allowed to speak his mind. More athletes should.
Ok, well that’s not the point you made or implied in your original post
To be honest, if I’m in Philly, I’m way more salty about Doc Rivers than anything else
I was fine with Doc until he turned into Brett Brown during the playoffs. Now I’m concerned about that also.
It was an OK move. He can still shoot the three and play D. But this doesn’t solve anything. Miami, New York and even Washington have improved this off-season. If the 76ers do nothing else this off-season, they’ve probably moved down to the fourth best team in the conference. Embiid’s best years are right now. Obviously, Beal isn’t going anywhere. It’s down to Lillard or bust. McCollum doesn’t get them where they need to be. If Portland is receptive, the 76ers have to go all in. It’s going to take more than Simmons to make it happen.
Meh, I don’t think the Sixers are out of the top 3. The Knicks vastly overachieved last season. Let’s see how they do in year two of thibs. I wouldn’t put them with the elites of the East just yet. The wizards still stink, they won’t crack top 5 and will more than likely be in the play in. The heat will surely be a rugged defensive squad and a tough out in the playoffs, but they still have offensive issues. I would put them in the 2nd tier of the East with Atlanta and Boston and possibly the Knicks. Not to mention the Sixers didn’t lose any starters from a team that was the best in the conference. Simmons sucked in the playoffs but he was still amazing in the regular season: all star, all nba defense, and DPOY runner up.
So recap. Downgrade backup Center. Upgrade backup 4. Same with Green. Same with Korkmaz. Ben Simmons still shooting 3s the gym.
Center is a downgrade? I think it is a (minor) upgrade. Pretty much a wash IMO but minus the dumb techs/plays that Howard seemed to specialize in.
The right move. He knows big games. Solid vet to have on bench. Sixers do have to fix the Ben thing. I just can’t see how he can come back. Not a Morey guy. He messed up Rockets chasing a ring with Harden. I think he’s scared to mess up a Ben trade too. So is asking a ridiculous price for him. Sixers have to move Ben. Warriors is probably best deal they will get. I love Kuminga and he can start with Harris.
The question remains, why don’t players want to come to Boston?
Dude isn’t it obvious to you?
If it isn’t I really can’t help you if you think they should wanna go to Beantown!
Daniel Green. He’s not Danny, he’s not our friend. He hates philly fans, thinks they are the worst fans.
