Spencer Dinwiddie is close to a deal with the Wizards, but it may take some complex maneuvering to get him there, Fred Katz writes in The Athletic’s free agency recap. The two sides are reportedly hammering out a three-year contract worth $60MM, but Washington is over the cap, so a sign-and-trade will have to be arranged involving the Nets and maybe more teams.
Katz points out that Brooklyn is already over the luxury tax threshold for next season and isn’t interested in adding salary. He suggests the teams may try to tie this deal to the trade sending Russell Westbrook to the Lakers. Katz is confident that Dinwiddie will eventually join the Wizards, but it won’t be easy to work through the details.
In the same piece, Alex Schiffer notes that Brooklyn has been trying to unload DeAndre Jordan‘s contract, which is worth nearly $20MM over the next two years. John Hollinger says the Lakers could send Kyle Kuzma directly to the Nets instead of the Wizards, which would enable Brooklyn to include Jordan and avoid a huge rise in its tax bill.
There’s more on potential trades to watch for:
- The Hornets are one of the few teams that still has flexibility after an active first night of free agency, Hollinger adds. A sign-and-trade of Devonte’ Graham allows Charlotte to have $15MM in cap room or to expand the deal and bring another player, possibly Lauri Markkanen. Hollinger states that the Hornets still need one more guard and another big man.
- The Warriors would be interested in trading for Joe Ingles if the Jazz make him available, sources tell Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic. Ingles will turn 34 soon, but his passing and shooting would be valuable in Golden State’s system, though Thompson cautions that actually acquiring him would be tricky from a cap perspective. The Warriors still have hope of signing longtime Spurs guard Patty Mills, Thompson adds.
- Several contending teams and younger teams are interested in getting Thaddeus Young from the Bulls, tweets Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago is hoping to resolve the situation with Markkanen before making a decision on Young.
- There’s still a chance the Raptors could keep Goran Dragic– who is being acquired from the Heat in the Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade – rather than flipping him to another team, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet (Twitter link).
Mills or Ingles PLEASE – one of these Aussies works perfect.
Send Dragon to Dallas for whatever flotsam and get it over with.
Common on Raptors. Flip Dragic to the Mavs…. and who would then take DeAndre Jordan? The Lakers?! They def don’t have the cap room for him. The Lakers need to find someone who wants Schroeder and use him to flip and get a shooter and a backup point. But seems like Schroeder is sitting there left out of the PG arms race for a reason. He’s a backup PG himself who thinks he’s a starter
Also forgot to ADD on. The nets would want Kuzma. Another dude who doesn’t play D
I’d hate to lose Ingles but if they did I guess I’d be ok with a high risk high reward style sign and trade for Oubre. Don’t know if I like Oubre but it would give them a 2nd option to take some offensive load off Mitchell.
Jazz are trying to cut luxury tax
Trading Favors to the Thunder was their cap move. I don’t think they’d move Ingles unless they thought they could better. He’s not the primary option but he fits seamlessly in what they do on both sides of the ball.
This. He’s a perfect fit for the Utah’s system. Can just be a spot up shooter or ease the burden on Mitchell/Conley for stretches by running the offense. I think Utah would be making a big mistake moving Ingles.
Oubre is the wing defender they need. Not saying O’Neal isn’t a stud on that end, but at 6’4, he has limitations. Oubre was improving the longer he had in HSW’s system. His last two months he was an 18/6 with a 38-40% jumper. A team with Conley/Mitchell/Gonert/O’Neal would be great for a 6’7/25yo/2way wing with a 7’2 wingspan. That’s going to be the best defense in the league(again).
Sure he’s a streaky outside shooter, but he wasn’t as bad for our Dubs as people think. After his 1st 10 games(7/55 from 3), he really started to fit in a lot better.
They’re trying to stay under luxury tax, HOWEVER, Oubre’s skillset would be a great fit for a Jazz team that has either old or small wing defenders. Royce O’Neal would be a DPoY if he was 6’8 with a 7ft wingspan, but he isn’t. However, a Conley/Mitchell/O’Neal/Oubre/Gobert lineup is easily an elite defense. As a Dubs fan, I think Oubre was highly underrated. His first 10 games he was 7/55 from 3, but if you take that out he wasn’t much worse than Wiggins. Somewhere around 37% from 3, and the last 2-3months he WAS 18/6 with similar 37-40% 3pt%. If he was healthy for the play in games he would’ve played for sure. Not sure if Utah is his number 1 destination, but he fits. For team that has Conley/Mitchell, I’d think giving up a ball handler like Ingles for a 25yo 6’7 2way wing like Oubre would be a no brainer.
I’d almost prefer we turn the Paschall/Jazz rumors into EP and a 1st for Georges Niang, and try to sign Raul Neto to be the Dubs backup PG… but Ingles would definitely be a good fit… Niang and Neto keep them as a younger squad but Ingles does what they both do
Few teams have $20 million cap room.
Top tier free agents are in deep trouble if the own team refused to resign him.
Mills went to college in the East Bay, hopefully that (or whatever else) sways him into signing with the W’s!
Can’t believe Knicks didn’t go after Dinwiddie. 20 mill a yr. for three yrs. He should be a Knick. It’s a good pickup for Wizards. Gotta give it to Thibs. His loyalty to Burkes and Noel. They better kill for him. I respect that about my coach. Gotta think they have a trade for a PG. We still have picks and Toppin, Quickley, Knox. A move can be made in season or by TD. Grimes and McBride were drafted. Cause they are more ready. They will get mins. Let’s hope they can perform. I like both of them.
Warriors like Knicks have just stepped back. And are monitoring the air waves lols. Warriors still have the Obrue move. I like Kuminga a lot. He’s the real deal. And they should just let him play. He’s an IQ guy and will do what needs to be done. His shot needs the work. He’s with the right team for that. Warriors can also wait till in season or by TD. To make that big move.
Uh the dubs didn’t step back. They added Otto Porter and Bjelicia to a team that’s losing Bazemore and Oubre. Klay is also returning. They just need a backup point guard and they’re set. A Steph/Wigs/Porter/Dray/Loon five with a 2nd unit of even a guy like Raul Neto with Poole/JTA/Bjelicia/Wiseman is legit for what they need. And they’re still getting Klay Thompson back before the playoffs. Shooters like Porter and Bjelicia instead of Bazemore and Oubre is an upgrade, 100%
Dinwiddie found the perfect fit in the WIZ. A team that never rebuilds. They’ll pay him whatever they can find in the moment, as they never plan to have cap space.
Lol not sure it’s worth reporting Grange, he’s proved he’s not a reliable source. If he says they might be interest in keeping Dragic, he’s guaranteed to be re-routed as he should.
