Warriors head coach Steve Kerr believes that adding veteran forwards Nemanja Bjelica and Otto Porter in free agency should help make Golden State a better three-point shooting team in 2021/22, as he tells Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.
Kerr called the signing of Bjelica “really exciting,” pointing out that the Warriors haven’t really had a floor-spacing, pick-and-pop big man since Marreese Speights, who generally shot from the mid-range rather than from beyond the arc.
“I look at Bjelica as the three-point-shooting version of Mo, in many ways,” Kerr said. “Because all of a sudden, you’re looking at a spaced floor when you consider Klay (Thompson)‘s return and Steph (Curry)‘s play last year. The ability to play Bjelica with Draymond (Green), which basically turns Draymond into the five and the pick-and-roll guy with Bjelica spaced. Really exciting.”
Kerr also praised Porter, referring to him as a player who can guard multiple positions on defense and who isn’t just “going to stand in the corner” on offense.
“The whole thing with Otto is health now,” Kerr told Kawakami. “He feels like he’s healthy and we’re going to give him every opportunity to get himself in shape and in rhythm. If he can return to form, then he’s a really, really interesting player for us. Somebody who could play an important role.”
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- Asked by Kawakami about lineup and rotation decisions to start the season, Kerr predicted that Jordan Poole will be the Warriors’ starting shooting guard until Thompson is ready to play, and said it’s “impossible to say” yet whether either Jonathan Kuminga or Moses Moody will play regular minutes.
- Kerr recognizes that trading Andre Iguodala in 2019 was necessary in order to get below the hard cap, but is thrilled to have the veteran forward back in Golden State, as Kawakami relays. “I think when we lost him, we lost a piece of our soul,” Kerr said of Iguodala. “… Andre’s return, I think, is huge in a lot of different ways. First, he’s still got plenty to offer, as he showed in Miami the last two seasons. So his addition on the court will be huge for us. And second, he just embodies everything we’re about — versatility, sacrifice, the clear defining of roles, the mentoring that he brings for the younger guys. You throw all that into the equation and Andre is just an enormous addition for us.”
- Kerr, who won a gold medal in Tokyo as an assistant coach for Team USA, was asked by Kawakami if he’d be interested in becoming the club’s head coach in 2024, assuming Gregg Popovich doesn’t return. His reply: “Of course I’d be interested. I mean, who wouldn’t be? I’ll leave it at that. I have no idea how it will all transpire; there are a lot of great candidates out there. And if I were to be considered, that would be an honor.”
- The Warriors issued a press release today officially announcing a series of previously-reported additions to Kerr’s coaching staff, including Kenny Atkinson, Dejan Milojevic, and Jama Mahlalela.
Let go warriors!
Reminiscing about Mo Buckets. The good old days…
I can’t see them coming back. The rest of the league has leveled up in a big way since Golden State were a lock for post-season success.
What’s the current lineup – Steph, Poole, Wiggins, Green, Looney? Portland-esque.
Really think it’s going to vary by matchup. I can see your lineup for ones with traditional 5s or swap looney with Wiseman but I think you could see Wiggins or porter player the 4 in smaller lineups with Green going center.
Porter, Bjelica, Iguodala, Toscano-Anderson, Kuminga, Moody, Wiseman, Payton and Lee absolutely destroys Portlands second unit, and most other ones too.
Also Steph >>>>>> Dame and even broken Klay >>>>> CJ. Really insulting comp you made there champ, lol
That said, really would love that Hield+Barnes for Wiggins trade, would really make this team as perfect as it could be.
I don’t understand the Portland comparison since the warriors has 3x the defense Portland has. maybe offensively but Portland defense is the reason they do so bad in the playoffs.
You don’t know ball with that icy take.
I always liked Bjelica’s shooting. He’s in a great spot with all that talent around him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the top 5 3 shooting % this year. Very underrated signing. He would be perfect for the Bulls and let go of Markkanen for a a pair of 2022 Lolla tickets.
Cue the daily Wally post about the Warriors sucking and paying x amount of $!
Kerr, Doc Rivers, Carlisle, Lue are the favorites for 2024. Kerr would be clear cut favorite except that it’s now Grant Hill show.
This is a better team than last yrs. I see them stronger after all star break. I also think they will probably still make a big trade. Either way they will be a tough out in playoffs.
The West is very competitive to me. And deeper than the East.
Well if Jordan Poole will be starting then that means they’ll be staggering Wiggins as the second team initiator.., sort of like last season. That could work as well. I would have thought Poole starting AND also backing up Curry would have been way too many minutes for him at this point in his development.
Thinking more, this makes a lot of sense. Wiggins must start because you can’t sit 30 million dollars. But.., he will also be the lead on the second team so it will be someone else instead of Wiggins with the starters in crunch time. Okay I like it. It’s almost like Wiggins is a bench piece but he plays with the starters in the first quarter.
Gary
Warriors can start with 5 championship guys
Curry
Klay
Iguodala
Green
Looney
Every guy plays in the nba Finals 4 -6 times
Can also start with a group of teenagers
2-6 times, not 4-6. Looney didn’t play in the postseason until 2018.
He was with the team the previous two years, but never stepped on the court during the playoffs until his third season with the team.
Wiggins is clearly the bad fit on this team now, and his massive salary could be split better amongst 2-3 players, like Buddy Hield and Harrison Barnes!
Why would Sacramento do that. Wiggins and Barnes are the same player so why give up Hield?
Frees cap/roster space for better fits with their younger players, plus Wiggins is a very tradeable asset, Kings could get a lot for him at the deadline.
Marty, is there any traction to that Hield- Barnes move?
It’s right there with the GSW-Simmons rumors on twitter, enough blue checks have mentioned it for it to maybe be a thing, I believe GSW has to add something, at minimum a draft pick and Wiseman is involved in a few of the mentions of it too.
To me, its the most perfect move: Hield IS that SG they need this year and Harry B reunites with the OG “Death Lineup”. I think they do this move at the deadline if nothing else crazier presents itself.
Lol, imagine asking Marty for any kind of advice.
Karl Anthony Towns? I saw some fantasy idea floated about sending Wiggins, Wiseman, Kuminga for KAT. I wonder if that would be possible.
Warriors have money to steal Clippers assistant coach
Big trade still to come for W’a sometime before midseason….. could be Simmons, Hield, or Siakam but I think it will be Beals!! W’s are one of the few contenders with assets to trade and that’s very exciting… btw W’s are in no hurry to pull the trigger… they have no problem selling tickets and they have all the leverage to patiently wait.
Trading Wiggins for Buddy and Harry B makes them head and shoulders above everyone.
I don’t see that trade happening. Kings never
give up assets like that for just Wiggins.
Barnes was a starter on the 73-9 team.
He’s a 3 D shooter plus front court size. Maybe not the defender but can be
the scorer Wiggins is. Hield
is a VERY good 3 shooter not much perhaps
much on D.
I am thinking Wiseman ,Wiggins and Moody but
I would offer Wiggins, Moody & future 1st Rd
Adding HB& Hield to this team makes them favorites in West.
Dubs need to hold Wiseman, Kuminga& Poole which is why Kings will want Wiggins & 1 of those 3 plus future 1st rd’er
Don’t think so. Beal is staying put& Dubs want to look over their lottery picks some more
Moody& Kuminga look almost NBA ready. No sense gutting the future for someone who might not stay
This roster has more than ppl see. Patience let them develope. It won’t take long. Wiseman, Kuminga Moody& Poole are the future. They need another PF.
#1 seed in the West this season. Get ready for an all-new generation of haters mad!
When 27 and 32 years old player became veteran? In 5 years Luka will be veteran. :-)
Technically you are either a prospect, rookie or veteran, so you get called a veteran when you’ve played 83 games.
When is Kay expect to come back and play
We don’t know yet. They say they’ll be able to figure it out in training camp by watching him. A rough guess today would be December. But that’s very fluid.
I saw him hit an outdoor half court bomb (in slo-mo) on his instagram and was running around the house like it was the playoffs haha
I think Klay is back opening night on minutes restrictions in the first half, and then slowly upping them until its the playoffs.
I remember when Klay hurt his knee in the playoff game when Danny Green bumped into him. Klay wanted to keep playing, he said he was fine, and in the tunnel Bob Meyers said, “if you play you can kiss your max contract goodbye.”
Obviously they had a verbal agreement and the Warriors of course willing to uphold that even though Thompson was going to miss the year. But he actually wanted to keep playing, he thought he could play through it, so perhaps you’re right. Opening night there’s no way you keep Klay off the floor.
They will wait at least 1 yr for Klay to do 5 on 5 court action. They may wait till January 2022.
Achilles are very severe & must be COMPLETELY HEALED before jumping and pushing off .
A reinjury possibly ENDS HIS CAREER.
GSW FO will be VERY PRECARIOUS. No sooner than x-mas day
PRECAUTIOUS
Good call Donald. You’re probably right.
Steve Kerr gives the absolute worst interviews you can get for the fan –
It’s all just fluff 24/7 , nothing digestible
No you didn’t lose your soul in a throw away year in last place trading a 37 yr old Iggy….and somehow for Actual value! Cmon
Kerr does not name his offense or system. There was talk of it once but not within a year or so. Of course GSW chats can get technical, I could have missed it.
Ehh I take it as his booth work has just shown him the path of least resistance in/thru the media
It’s boring is all, and never believable…but Id rather have that than a babbling fool overplaying his hand all the time
