The Warriors’ offseason, outside of drafting Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody in the lottery, may not have been what fans have imagined as the team attempts to regain championship contender status, but it’s not for lack of trying, writes Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.
After trying and failing to attract veterans like Nicolas Batum and Patty Mills, the Warriors chose to be judicious with their use of their taxpayer mid-level exception. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, using the exception would end up costing the team an extra $41MM, given its tax situation. In that scenario, Golden State’s payroll and tax bill combined would come out to over $400MM. Instead, the team will rely on jumps in responsibility from players like Jordan Poole and Juan Toscano-Anderson.
Kawakami also writes that the team is unlikely to package Moody and Kuminga in a trade at this point in time.
We have more news from the Warriors:
- Golden State isn’t actively engaged on any trades at the moment, team president Bob Myers said (Twitter link via Anthony Slater of The Athletic). According to Myers, trade talks are “dormant at this moment in time,” and the league seems to be “on pause” on the trade front.
- When asked about if the team is done adding veteran free agents, Myers replied, “I think we still need some kind of ballhandling guard. We’re a little thin there” (Twitter link via Slater). While the list of guards left on the market is thin, there are still some interesting options to chose from.
- Despite being turned down by several targets while trying to use their taxpayer MLE, the Warriors still may utilize it, with the buyout market being a likely target for such a deal, Myers said (Twitter link via Nick Friedell of ESPN).
400m wow I can’t believe we have 105 guys in the nba making at least 10 million!
With all that money they’re saving the Warriors only cost $362M this year.
It’s a Pity when Rich owners don’t spend money. I remember Donald Sterling would let the All-Stars walk instead of paying them when they became free agents. He was hated around the league for being a penny pincher. In fact I heard from one of the coaches that one year in training camp Sterling had a tizzy fit and said,
“We have to buy their socks?”
Here we have the Warriors ownership group opening their wallets and the fans love it. Probably the greatest owners in the league just for that reason. They’re not afraid to put their money where their mouth is. I tip my cap to the Warriors ownership group.
I mean… he was hated for other things as well
Absolutely, Washington.
Businesses can only operate in the red for so long. The way things are going Joe Lacob will no longer be a billionaire in a few years.
The Warriors are worth four billion dollars and that’s not going down anytime soon. Don’t forget he only paid 450 million.
So you’re saying the Warriors are losing money? I’m not so sure that’s an accurate statement.
You still believe you know more about running a team than someone who has been an owner for 15 years. Lacob has spent 30+ years building companies from scratch. I doubt he will run the Warriors into the ground… Houston must be really boring.
Warriors don’t want to spend on a fringe, marginal ball handler when they know Ben Simmons is available. As soon as the Sixers figure out Damian Lillard will not be traded right now, they’ll go ahead and dump Simmons on either the Kings or The Warriors. Clock ticks as we wait for that all to shake out.
Warriors are in a wait and see mode. Which is the best thing they should do. see what your weakness is during the first 2 months than make trades. Moody looks better player than first thought. Kuminga has the talent to be a future all star. If Wiseman improves his defense they may not need another player.
Base your roster and future roster depth on a couple summer league games and you are in trouble my friend.
Not but you can see they are the best players on the court playing in the summer league. Right now a trade is not happening so might as well wait until 2 months into the season where you need help. I am more concerned about Center position then anything on the warriors. Is Wiseman ready to be the Center is the question.
Look at the Warriors revamped coaching staff. I think they are prepared to make Wiseman an effective center in 21-22.
Plenty of guys have been summer league MVP’s and gone on to do nothing of note ever.
Isaiah Thomas just dropped 81 in a Pro-Am game.
It’s tempting to think you can take even morsels of real info from these games but it’s really pretty random in the end.
In the summer league you can see players that will make the NBA and players that have no chance or need a lot of work. I was hoping Jessup would show some promise but he seems to struggle. Oliver looks like he could be a bench player. Besides payton, Kuminga, and Moddy none of the others look like they have the skills to be NBA players.
Wiseman, Poole and a bunch of picks to POR
Lillard to PHI
Simmons and Covington or Powell to GSW
Lets
f’n
go
Read the hoops rumors glossary on how salary matching works buddy…
I done left Wiggins out of that deal on accident, my bad. Wiggins to either Portland or Phily, obviously.
“Here are my scraps, give me good players”
Besides the fact that GSW wouldn’t be able to do this without including Wiggins for salary purposes (and I don’t think that would be enough if Covington or Powell were included), Portland hard turns this down. Wiseman and Poole on their own are hardly centerpiece players for a franchise player let alone asking for an additional rotation player to be included.
GS could include their 2022 first round pick but everything after that gets a little murky. Their 2024 is owed to Memphis so they can’t offer their 2023 or 2025 picks straight up. A 2023 pick swap isn’t appealing at all if you think GS is a playoff team that season. So they’d be offering what? A 2022 first rounder (meh value), probably their 2026 first rounder, and various pick swaps in the 2023-2029 years. Maybe Philly might throw in a pick or two in this scenario, but I’d argue that the onus isn’t on them to make up the remaining trade value for Lillard if “all” GSW is giving up is Wiggins, Wiseman, and Poole. Simmons doesn’t have a NTC so it’s not like he could block a trade to Portland even if he doesn’t want to play there. If Portland decided that Simmons+ (probably Maxey/Thybulle and picks) was more appealing than Wiggins/Wiseman/Poole+ then there isn’t much stopping Philly and Portland from cutting out the third team (GSW) in this scenario.
Oh man, I left Wiggins out, Wiggins goes to Portland or Phily, obviously. I have been touting trading Wiggins in hundreds of these comments, many written today, so writing essays about how wrong I am, when I clearly accidentally left him out, really makes your essay irrelevant, lol probably should ask for clarification next time!
I mean Wiggins, Wiseman, Poole plus random first round picks with low value (assuming the Warriors are a playoff team at least the next two seasons) is still terrible value for Portland to justify moving Lillard and one of Covington/Powell. I mean I’m just spitballing here, but let’s say Dame says he wants to go to Philly. An offer of Simmons and one, or both, of Maxey/Thybulle is more valuable than Wiggins, Wiseman, Poole. Simmons is still the best player, not named Damian Lillard, in that deal. With 4 years left on his deal, Portland would have plenty of time to either convince Simmons to stay or to try and rehab his value enough to move him in another trade.
Lillard is going nowhere and if Portland traded him they could get Simmons straight up for Lillard. Simmons is proabbly not going any where. Morey wants to much for him unless Simmons holds out. Sacramento might be his destination.
GSW has an intriguing trade package
Just not in Philly’s eyes IMO—Kuminga Moody and Wiseman and Wiggins isn’t putting Philly back in a contending sphere next to Embiid. So I think that would need to be a 3 team trade.
Ultimately I think Morey will see the light visavis Dame. But I think he’ll still want a win-now perimeter guy in whatever trade he agrees to n
Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody are not ready to be primary rotation players.
Bench guys
Otto Porter
Bjelica
Iguodala
JTA
Poole
Looney and Wiggins starting
Not a bad bench, right? (Even though they say Poole will probably start while Klay is out.)
That is a scary team if (or when) Wiseman and Kuminga are ready.
Which we know they’re not. Just by watching Wiseman last year we know that. It’ll take a few years but yes the potential to be great is definitely there for these 2.
Not a bad guess. But if wiseman develops quicker than u think and kuminga’s time in the g league helps his transition then u might be wrong. They both good for 15-20 minutes a game as is. We might not win a chip with them in the playoffs but we’ll be competitive. We got 3 rings and 5 finals in a row, can’t win em all every year
Seriously, Kuminga is tearing apart the Summer League. Wiseman will be fine.
Well if he’s tearing it up in meaningless pick up games against guys who are mostly sub-NBA level then I guess I’ll pencil him into an All Star berth this year.
Picture Wiseman banging with jojo then tell me he’s going to be fine.
Unless the dubs are willing to part with Thompson as a starting point in discussion with Sixers, no sense in talking. Dubs have nothing Sixers need. Simmons is going nowhere unless Sixers get something that improves a number one seed with a championship caliber roster already .
You just can’t think in that way. Clearly it is 3-way trade.
Example:
Warriors get Simmons
76ers get Fox
Kings get Wiggins, Moody and picks
Why should the Warriors trade for Simmons? Doesn’t make any sense?
Agree w/ OJ
“Clearly” it’s a 3-way but Silli’s example shows the difficulty in making such a trade work.
Sacramento is balking at Fox for Simmons—you think they’ll take a salary dump #14 pick and future mediocre picks instead? Seems unlikely.
Marty’s DamePHI SimmonsGSW WisemanetalPOR makes a little more sense but still seems like a stretch. For one, what’s the incentive for GSW? Dame is the far superior player—why even involve Philly?
I like fox to the sixers but the kings don’t have enough faith in Halliburton to do that deal and the Sixers will want more than fox. Try fox, heild and bagley plus picks.
You know the Warriors are not going to trade Klay Thompson and who would really want him at this point? I mean in a trade? Warriors love him of course, but there’s no way the Sixers would take him or any team for that matter. Four more years at Max money? Coming off two major MAJOR leg injuries?
It’s Wiggins or some of that stuff from Sacramento. Your choice. Good luck with Buddy hield and the 6-11 guy from Duke who can’t stay on the court.
If it is Thompson its not happening. Thompson is the better player than Simmons. #1 seed is last year. It means nothing this year. Nets and Bucks look more like #1 seed than sixers. Morey hates the warriors so he will not be trading Simmons to them.
I agree Thompson isn’t happening, which is why big Ben to the dubs will never happen I repeat they have nothing the Sixers need.
So you’ll take Buddy hield and Bagley. Maybe a first round pick but Sacramento is not stupid. They’re not going to give MULTIPLE first-round picks, are you kidding me? It’s Ben Simmons.
So there you go, that’s the package you’ll receive if you don’t like Wiggins and Poole and a first-round pick and whatever else.., maybe Moody.
Sixers need a PG more than anything coming back in a trade. Sixers do not need Wiseman with Embiid there. Wiggins and Harris are about the same type of player so the teams do not match up in a trade.
Uhhh, this trade isnt about need, other than Ben Simmons needing to get out of Phily, pay attention, this is Ben saying “Im never playing for the 76ers again” – at that point, his trade value becomes “whatever you can get” aka Wiggins and picks.
Ah big Ben hasn’t commented publicly on anything and let’s not forget he’s philly property signed sealed and got no say . You my friend keep throwing out Wiggins as if the sixers would accept something they don’t need a throw in for matching salary. Lol .Ben value to the Sixers is far greater than Wiggins to the dubs.
I agree with you. But it does not matter once a player says they arent suiting up for their team and they MUST be traded. Then, the players value plummets, ergo Simmons-Wiggins straight up is valid, whether you like it or not.
That only even applies if the player has leverage (i.e. is an impending free agent), which Simmons is not since he’s under contract for 4 more years. If Simmons was really hard stuck on not playing (and not reporting) to the Sixers, I’m sure the Sixers could easily suspend him without pay. He’ll quickly report back to Philly if it means he isn’t getting paid and he’s not getting any closer to free agency/a suitable trade partner.
The Sixers overplayed/are overplaying their hand by asking for as much as they are in a trade, but they’re also not in a situation where they NEED to move Simmons.
LMAO you live in a fantasy world Marty.
1) no salary cap intelligence or understanding
2) 2K rotted your brain with these offers
3) whatever happened to that bold declaration of Kawhi signing with GSW?
4) I can tell you play 2K with “fair trades off”
I was waiting for this article, been curious about GSW’s MLE (or lack thereof) –
So Lacob does have a number that’s not infinite, good to know
Quality work Hr
The Warriors’ trade assets have declined considerably—teams would much rather have the option to pick at 7/14 (or the possibility of Minn pick) than Kuminga and Moody. Or at least most teams probably would.
Trading for 3 young guys you didn’t pick, that’s a big gamble for a GM trading an AS caliber guy. If they flame out so does your rebuild and that’s a tough pill to swallow, given they weren’t even your picks.
Will be interesting to see what GSW can get in the market when things pick back up.
I think they are still ahead of the market if a team wants a quasi rebuild-
If its star for star like Philly wants yea they don’t move any needles but I think GSW is in a good spot today having the flexibility to do or don’t do whatever the markets bears out
But Kuminga & Moody are who a GM would be likely to pick. Good value. Better than Wiggins in the near future… Maybe not this year. Next year Wigs will be an attractive expiring for trading.
