The Jazz are well above the luxury tax line after re-signing Mike Conley and adding Rudy Gay in free agency but they don’t plan on dumping any of their mid-salaried players to ease the burden, Zach Lowe of ESPN reports. Lowe names Joe Ingles ($12.4MM), Bojan Bogdanovic ($18.7MM) and Royce O’Neale ($8.8MM) as the type of players that the Jazz could look to dump if they wanted to get below the tax line or reduce the bill. There’s no indication any of them are going anywhere anytime soon.
We have more from the Western Conference:
- Conley played a role in convincing Gay to leave the Spurs for the Jazz in free agency, Sarah Todd of The Deseret News writes. Conley said the front office urged him to recruit his former Memphis teammate. “I’ve done it little bit (before) but not at this capacity,” Conley said. “I was like putting babies down for bed and having to drop them and go take a call because I’m trying to make sure we lock up a guy like Rudy. … I was really locked in on that and it was fun.”
- David Adelman will be the lead assistant for the Nuggets, Mike Singer of the Denver Post tweets. Jordi Fernandez will be the second assistant under Michael Malone while Popeye Jones, whose addition to the staff was previously reported, will be the third assistant on Malone’s bench.
- Luka Doncic‘s new contract extension includes a 15% trade kicker, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets. However, the trade bonus would only kick in if the cap rose significantly in the future, since a trade bonus can’t increase a player’s salary beyond the maximum and the All-NBA guard has already qualified for a higher max salary than he’d typically be eligible for. Doncic’s five-year, $207MM extension with the Mavericks became official on Tuesday.
Jazz have $17 million over tax line
Salary dump Joe Ingle $13 million
So, basically your comment is to repeat a small part of what was written above? Why bother? When you come up with outlandish trade ideas, they are at least your own ideas. This is just unnecessary.
I dont think he reads after he posts. Its like a robot.
I’m not sure he reads the articles before he posts either.
Jazz owners are aware of player salaries.
Don’t worry he will soon post 2-3 of them will be traded to GSW for 2nd round picks. #staytuned
Unless they can find some other team that wants him with $13M in cap space or a $13M TPE, there’s no way to dump that much salary anyway.
Gee, what’s more important? Having a championship caliber roster and paying a luxury tax fine or giving away a player for lesser assets and being a middle of the pact wanna be contender. Not everything revolves around revenue and NOI. Utah has a title squad for the first time since 1999 so why would they break it up now? LOL
Preach bro. Haters only hate. If you’re a contender. Then the tax is only part of the price you pay to win.
I think having Wade as a minority owner also will make an emphasis on building and maintaining a quality title worthy team over the bottom line. It makes absolutely zero sense for the Jazz just to give Ingles away, and to a team that they might possibly see down the line like GSW? If anything I see him going to Washington for Bertans and possibly Rui. Utah needs a stretch four and his contract lines up with Gobert/Conley/Mitchell. Maybe Washington attaches a top 10 protected pick + Bertans for him?
Agreed. There’s no reason yet for the Jazz to blow it up. They were a legit title contender last year until Mitchell had his injury. If they’re worried about luxury tax, then they shouldn’t have resigned Conley. And I doubt that they would find a similar skill, or better player, with Ingles as the main piece going back without taking on additional salary.
Run it back one more time. If they flame out again, then you consider your options. Ingles is a free agent at the end of the year anyway so should be easy enough to let him walk. Bogdanovic, Clarkson, and O’Neal should have enough value as rotation players as long as they stay healthy and don’t fall off a cliff in regards to their production, plus their contracts aren’t too bad right now.
No way Washington is trading Rui in an Ingles package. They literally just drafted a guy is Krispert who has similar attributes and is on a rookie contract. And they Still have Deni A. I think they move Bertans if someone takes that terrible contract just not to unload the contract and give up a pick in the process. Rui is part of the future. I see a Kuzma package happening though for sure.
Ingles is too good of a player on that team to let him go just to save a few bucks.
This will be the Year to make or break Utah. If they don’t win it. There will be some changes!
Agreed Spike. They’ll want to avoid the repeater tax if this season doesn’t end up in an NBA Finals appearance.
If they continue to push further into the playoffs each year then that’s progress. Otherwise, they’ll need to tinker. Coach now has a much more versatile roster to draw from.
They’re likely still looking for an athletic wing if none of the SL prospects are to their liking. Although, Brantley has been looking like he’s making enough progress that they might not look further.
I think they’re done looking, as long as rookie Butler is good to go.
Wade as minority owner probably is not underwriting these deficits so has limited influence on how large it is.
