Guard Joe Young is taking a proactive approach to getting back in the league. He’ll work out for NBA teams in Houston this week, Kelly Iko of The Athletic tweets. Young, who appeared in 127 games for the Pacers from 2015-18, has been playing in China since the Pacers parted ways with him.
We have more from around the basketball world:
- Longtime NBA forward Luis Scola has been named CEO of Italy’s Pallacanestro Varese, Sportando relays. Scola retired after playing for Varese last season and Argentina’s national team in the Tokyo Olympics.
- Darius Garland, Keldon Johnson and Jaren Jackson Jr. are some of the top breakout candidates for the upcoming season, according to a poll of 15 NBA executives conducted by Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto.
- The salary cap could increase significantly when new TV deals are signed, Morten Jensen of Forbes Sports notes. Citing a league source, Jensen writes that a $171MM salary cap is possible, assuming no cap smoothing, by 2025. Even with cap smoothing, the cap will likely increase by $15MM annually. However, it should be pointed out that it’s unknown how much the NBA’s next TV deal will be worth, so these figures are speculative.
NBA is a confusing league with draft, sign and trade, free agent, contracts, etc etc rules. I thought the MLB was bad and has you scratching your head at times. But the NBA has this “wing it” mentality and hard to understand it at times. I am shocked it has a players union in all honesty. It’s like the WWE with all the stuff going on in the NBA. From Wall to Simmons to Lillard, it’s like the good, the bad, and the ugly. Just waiting for the chair shot and Simmons going through the Wall.
Compared to those in MLB and the NFL, the players have so much more power in the NBA. Only recently have players in the NFL been receiving more guarantees in their contracts, not like in a lot of sports where the players usually have fully-guaranteed deals (just like the coaches do).
Odd thing to say or compare with mlb. Mlb has the draft, free agency and traders but almost no other restrictions because of the salary cap. “Rules” kind of prevent you from “winging it”.
Good-Lillard, bad-Wall, ugly-Simmons
MLB is more confusing imo. 40 man roster, option years, arbitration, Rule 5 draft all difficult for the average fan to fully grasp. As an NBA fan I like the salary cap jumps – they’re exciting and opportunity for a good front office to gain advantage.
