1:53pm: The Heat have officially signed Martin, the team announced in a press release.
12:48pm: Free agent forward Caleb Martin is signing a two-way contract with the Heat, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
Martin is known as a defense-oriented hustle player and holds career averages of 5.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 16 MPG over two seasons with the Hornets.
Charlotte waived Martin last month before his salary for the 2021/22 season could become guaranteed. Charania notes that Caleb will now be competing against his twin brother Cody Martin in the same division — Cody remains a member of the Hornets.
Both of the Heat’s two-way contracts are now filled, after the team previously signed former Kansas guard Marcus Garrett. Once Martin’s deal is official, Miami will have a full 20-man preseason roster.
Huge pickup for the bench
Ok, this helps some of what I had been saying, although, they did let some interesting prospects get away. This also at least helps make up for not using the last roster spot until after the 50 game mark, with still a few guys left that could help at that wing position they still needed help at.
Obviously I’ve talked about being a caleb martin fan in the past, and I think he fits this culture well
They’d have been much better off giving the spot to DeJon Jarreau. Huge mistake.
Obviously…but he already is gone at this point, so beating the point home right now doesnt do much
It’s so strange or odd in a way I guess that when they were younger Caleb was the superior player and highly recruited. He was the better scorer and seemed a more naturally gifted offensive player.
I can’t remember which school, either Nevada or NC st, but their strategy was to recruit Cody heavily and get a commitment knowing the brothers strongly preferred to play together. The school knew if they could get Cody locked in Caleb would follow.
Of course Cody had few Recruiters on his Trail so promising the starting gig and full ride etc, etc, was fantastic for him and the competition was nil or very little.
Now as professionals Cody is the one who was drafted, Cody is the one who has an MBA contract, and Cody is a little further ahead in establishing an NBA career where as Caleb is still reaching for a gig. Interesting how things play out in life.
