Now that the Heat have significantly reshaped their roster in the offseason, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel examines how willing Miami is to add a 15th player. Though Winderman allows that there are still players in free agency whose additions could improve the on-court product, he notes luxury tax worries could preclude the Heat from adding someone just yet. Winderman adds that a future trade could be the club’s route to making further roster tweaks changes instead.
The Heat’s most significant offseason change was undoubtedly the epic sign-and-trade agreement with 35-year-old veteran point guard Kyle Lowry. Miami also added versatile forward P.J. Tucker, fresh off a title run with the Bucks, and big man Markieff Morris, in addition to re-signing sharpshooter Duncan Robinson, reserve centers Dewayne Dedmon and Omer Yurtseven (though Yurtseven did not play a game with the Heat, he was on the roster at the end of the 2020/21 season), and guards Victor Oladipo, Max Strus and Gabe Vincent. Additionally, Miami inked All-NBA swingman Jimmy Butler to a lucrative maximum contract extension.
There’s more out of the East:
- 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Chris Bosh could very well have wound up with the Bulls in 2010 free agency. Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel explores the Heat‘s backup plans had the club been unable to secure Bosh’s services. Winderman reveals that, at one point during the 2010 free agent hunt, Bosh relayed to an NBA executive that he would be joining Chicago. Had that transpired, Miami would have pivoted to adding some of the other All-Stars available that summer. “If, in fact, C.B. would have gone somewhere else, we had been recruiting Amar’e [Stoudemire] and we had recruited Joe Johnson,” Heat team president Pat Riley said of his next contingency moves. “It could have worked with Dwyane [Wade] and with LeBron [James], that that team would have been successful. But I don’t know if it would have been as successful as it was with Chris, because Chris was the ultimate complement.”
- There is currently no end in sight for the Sixers‘ standoff with All-Star Ben Simmons. During a podcast conversation with Darren Wolfson of SKOR North, Brian Windhorst of ESPN indicated that he expects Simmons to remain away from the team through at least the start of the forthcoming 2021/22 NBA season.
- Newly-added Nets coaching consultant Steve Clifford recently explained his anticipated role with the club, per Ernie Clark of the Bangor Daily News. “I’m here [in Brooklyn] a lot this month and through training camp, and I’ll be more of a resource,” Clifford said. “I’ll be watching a lot of film but most of the time I’ll still be living in Orlando. I’ll visit with the team once or twice a month and just take direction from [head coach] Steve Nash, whatever he wants me to do.” Clifford was previously a head coach with the Magic and Hornets across the past eight NBA seasons.
It’s 10 times harder to trade Simmons this month than in July?
In July, asking price starts with
Wiseman + Kuminga + Moody + 2 Future First + salary matching
Now its old man Kevin Love and something
Hurry up, man
If they ever get a deal done, it’s gonna make the Harden trade look great!
Rockets trade Harden for Oladipo and picks
Terrible trade
Buuurn
Ya but they were paving the way for Jalen Green and plus it was the same situation: Harden didn’t want to be there
Harden is a former league MvP,that trade should look great without comparing it to others. And you’re probably gonna have that point of view regardless of what the 6ers receive.
But Hardens market was limited to contenders, and Simmons market should expand to borderline playoff teams, maybe even a little deeper. The 6ers will be trading him at what could end up being the lowest value he holds throughout his career, but they should still end up with atleast one legit rotation player, and could come out of it with more than just 1.
Just compare PG-13 and AD deals with Harden – OKC gor SGA+all picks+Gallo, NO got Ingram+picks+players, all HOU got is picks. Its a laughable deal.
AD might be a better overall player than Harden, but PG-13 is certnailny a level below.
Daryl Morey’s job isn’t to rush a trade to satisfy NBA fans it’s to get the best return.
That’s not working out well as Simmons’ value continues to decline.
I thought the same thing last year with Harden. Rockets proved me wrong. I’m not making that mistake again.
Morey already over played his hand. He could have gotten more before the draft but wanted way too much. Now he will hope for a desperate team with a lot of draft picks.
Sixers will hold out trading him as long as they can until a desperate team comes calling.
Sixers are the team that will get desperate
Interesting point on Bosh / Bulls.. I had always assumed they all wanted to go to Chicago or NY so they would all be leaving their teams and share in the “hate”… NY fell off the table early because of James Dolan’s arrogance.. then Chicago fell off because they refused to clear the deck to sign all three… the Heat cleared that deck and the rest is history. That’s how I always understood it? Now this article is suggesting the Heat had Lebron and Wade in the bag and had to convince Bosh? Is that true?
That’ s a lot of players signed by the Heat, but compare rosters to last year, and a lot of names are gone: hence “reshaping”.
Gone from starting roster 20/21: Achuiwa, Bradley, Dragic, Harkless, Iguodala, Leonard, Nunn, Olynyk, Silva.
Trades since last year: Leonard for Ariza… Harkless+Silva for Bjelica… Bradley+Olynyk for Oladipo… Achuwa+Dragic for Lowry. (only Dipo & Lowery kept)
FAs not retained: Ariza, Bjelica, Harkless, Iguodala, Nunn.
Added 7: 1)Lowery, FAs: Dedmon, Mk.Morris, Tucker, Yurtseven, and youth Stewart, Garrett.
Kept 9: 2)Herro, 3)Robinson, 4)Butler, 5)Adebayo, Okpala, Vincent, Strus, Oladipo, Haslem
They did gain a bit; I was skeptical. Lowry better help rebounding, which he can. They should have entertaining starters. Last year’s team was weighed down by good playoff vets who did not add much to a team not about to go far in the playoffs.
I’m good with the Simmons situation going into the season. And I actually think it could be the 6ers best play.Plug Thybulle into the starting 5,with Curry running the point.See what they have there, with Maxey getting more minutes in there as well.See how Thybulle and Maxey handle the bigger roles, and figure out what is needed from there.
Ya also have players with trade restrictions being added to the pool of possibilities.Contenders could get off to disappointing starts,non-contenders could get off to starts that could make them think they’re a Ben Simmons away, injuries could happen.
If Simmons quit on the team,he’s already not a part of what they are now.But they still hold him as a piece to add to what they are now, nothing wrong with seeing exactly what that looks like without him before deciding they’re next move.
K-Low, PJ, Markieff & Dedmon added to an already old roster… people have a go at the LAL, but I think we have just found our geriatric team right here!
Did you just magically forget about Herro (21) Bam (24) and Duncan (27)???? lol Not to mention Butler is in his prime at 32… the guys you named are there for toughness, facilitating, and defense.. not scoring.
I think that Ben Simmons will end up a Trailblazer when all is said and done, but Dame will also stay. For multiple reasons it makes sense.
Because you you live In Oregon or something? Because it wouldn’t make sense for either team lol… Simmons would drag Lillard (both need the ball to succeed) and Simmons’ lack of shooting ability would cripple the rest of the roster. They don’t have bigs that can shoot in Portland do they? A team with Simmons needs bigs that can shoot to cover his weaknesses… also if reports on Simmons / Golden State are true.. the 76ers are beyond delusional on his value and wouldn’t take less than Portland’s entire starting 5 lol
I think Ben ends up in Sacto, with Hield and Haliburton going back the other way
As Raps fan, Sac really should let Fox go for Simmons and keep Haliburton. Buddy should be kept for trade asset. Davion looks like a capable backup.
