Former Hawks guard Brandon Goodwin worked out for the Celtics this week, Chris Grenham of Forbes Sports tweets. There’s mutual interest in a training camp invite, though no contract has been signed. Goodwin saw action in 47 games with Atlanta last year, averaging 4.9 PPG and 2.0 APG.
He played on a $1.7MM contract last season and became a free agent when the team failed to extend a qualifying offer. He didn’t play in the postseason, partially due to a respiratory condition.
We have more from the Eastern Conference:
- While most of the rotation spots are a given, the Bulls will have a number of intriguing training camp battles, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times notes. Marko Simonovic could work his way into the mix at both power forward and center, while Troy Brown Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr. will compete for second-unit minutes at the wing. Free agent signee Alex Caruso and Coby White will fight for backcourt minutes once White fully heals from shoulder surgery.
- Oddsmakers don’t think much of the Wizards, but they may be underestimating what the front office did this offseason, Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington writes. PointsBet has a 34.5-win over/under line for the Wizards, 12th among Eastern Conference teams, and ESPN’s experts peg them as the 11th-best team in the conference. However, Washington improved its depth this summer and project to be an improved defensive unit, Hughes notes.
- The Knicks get a B-minus from The Athletic’s Zach Harper as their offseason grade. While the backcourt was upgraded with the addition of Kemba Walker, Harper believes the small forward spot didn’t improve all that much by replacing Reggie Bullock with Evan Fournier. They also didn’t improve in the frontcourt spots, in Harper’s estimation.
The Knicks moves were probably the best they could do. Top players still not ready to commit to playing at MSG. Fournier I feel is a upgrade offensively and he’s more versatile than Bullock. Walker a HUGE upgrade over Payton so I give Knicks a B+ since CP3 or Lowry wanted no part of NY.
Knicks will miss Bullock’s 3 point shooting.
Not if Fournier does his job. Really, he just has to stay healthy.
I doubt Alex Caruso will be fighting to hard for backcourt minutes with Coby White. The Bulls will need his defense and hustle, and probably won’t be able to keep him off the court. I’m sure that he will be playing a minimum of 28-30 min per game.
They need White for his catch and shoot prowess…they will complement each other, not compete.
Agree, depth is always a good thing to have.
Caruso can also play the wing. On small ball lineups.
Are you counting Ayo D. Out seen what he did when Williams took a seat in summer league .
Ayo won’t be in the rotation.
Agree with you. Bulls have LaVine, Ball, Caruso and White at guard. So, barring injuries, there are no minutes for Ayo. Ayo may not even be one of the twelve players who will be wearing a jersey.
Ayo is a nice pickup. But Bulls want to show LaVine the playoffs. So IMO they will go slow with him.
Caruso’s 3point % was 40% last year compared to Coby’s 36%. Yeah of course they will need both players to play, but one is clearly more deserving of more minutes imo. Also they aren’t desperate for shooting, but they are in great need of defense.
The Bulls must think that Coby White is a role player and not a star. In the off season, the Bulls signed Ball and Caruso to big long term deals. Nothing wrong with having a solid rotation player. Like Caruso but think that the Bulls went overboard. Not sure if Caruso is worth a four year $36 million dollar guaranteed contract.
Bullock – 30.0 mins, .442% FG, .410% 3PT, .909% FT, 3.4 reb, 1.5 ast, 0.8 stl, 10.9 pts
Fournier – 30.3 mins, .461% FG, .388% 3PT, .797% FT, 2.9 reb, 3.7 ast, 1.0 stl, 19.7pts
Really — Really — REALLY —
Scored double the points and we all know Fournier is a REAL shooter scorer. Which opens up offense more. For Randle, RJ guys who put it on the floor. Really? this guy makes a living informing us Really !!!!
Upgraded ???? REALLY

4.9 ast, 19.3 pts
Payton – 23.6 mins, .286% 3PT, .682% FT,
3.2 ast, .10.1 pts
Knicks backup PG was our closer. Now we have a choice. This guy Zach EVER fkn play ball. Another genius …..
We have improved dramatically on paper. Now we will put it on the hardwood. We got Thibs to make sure of that. “In Thibs we Trust”
Put Fournier on the Knicks and watch the scoring drop – compare apples-to-apples. It’s easy to score on a team that doesn’t D-up and shot attempts are higher because you are the offensive option. Now he’ll have to share with RJ, Randle, and Walker chucking up shots.
Yeah chucking up. Only thing chucking is your knowledge. Disagreeing with me only makes you better. But get some real info lol. Please tell us all how many times you watched the Knicks, Kemba, Fournier. Since they are three different teams you don’t even care about. A debate takes knowledge not hate. Trust me I got the time to school you.
The beef against Fournier is, Bullock is a better defender. Definitely no issue about ability to score. In that area, Fournier is way, way much better. Fournier has to have an improved defense to thrive in Thibs’ system. And he will. No improvement in the frontcourt? What about Mitchell Robinson SIMPLY playing?
I don’t think they improved ‘dramatically’ but it’s definitely more than this author is giving the Knicks credit for. For him to boil down Bullock-to-Fournier as essentially a lateral move is crazy.
I like Bullock, but he’s strictly 3 and D. He can’t do much of anything else on the court. Fournier shot even better from 3 last year and shot more of them per game, so that erases one of Bullock’s two skills. So what the author is saying is that Bullock is so much better at defense than Fournier that it erases everything else Fournier brings to the table offensively, and I don’t buy that.
The stats show it’s dramatic. I did say on paper. But I trust Thibs. So I believe we will be much better. But better this yr means 4th or 5th seed. The East is better and deeper. I’m about the games. I believe we are better and deeper. So I want to see us in second rd and compete. I’m going to enjoy the season.
Writer also does not take into account Mitch playing. He’s heavier and playing for contract. That’s motivation.
Everyone said about the same thing and it’s hard to disagree so why all the arguing.
Knix got a bit better…
possibly only to prevent a natural slump following last year’s rise.
Please, no more 6′ guards on the Celtics! That’s been a built in weakness for years. Brandon Goodwin may be very good but he’s too short.
