SEPTEMBER 3: The signing is official, the Mavs announced today in a press release. Dallas also announced that it has waived EJ Onu, who had signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the team last month.
SEPTEMBER 1: The Mavericks will sign Jaquori McLaughlin to a two-way contract, tweets Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
After going undrafted out of UC Santa Barbara, the 23-year-old guard was expected to sign a training camp deal with the Warriors. McLaughlin played for Golden State during Summer League, averaging 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 9.6 assists in five games, but accepted Dallas’ offer instead.
Once the signing becomes official, the Mavericks will have both two-way slots filled, with Eugene Omoruyi occupying the other one. The move will also push Dallas to the training camp limit of 20 players.
I was kind of hoping more for a 3-way deal
The link above, has hoopsrumor comments. But its funny because the comments are nothing at all about the sole topic of McLaughlin.
The Warriors could definitely use a reliable backup for Steph Curry.
Eh, they have one spot left and it looks like they’ve narrowed it down to Mulder and GP2. Steph plays around 33 a game so they need 15 minutes a night. Iggy played 21.3mpg last year so he should be more effective in 15mpg as the backup PG, sharing ball-handling duties alongside Poole. While I would’ve preferred Patty Mills, Austin Rivers, or Raul Neto, our situation isn’t that dire.
Last year’s problem was the lack of a 2nd unit. They finished the season with a top 10 lineup(Steph/Baze/Wigs/Dray/Loon) and an 8 man rotation(Poole/JTA/Mulder).
Now they have
Steph/Wigs/Otto/Dray/Loon
Iggy/Poole/JTA/Bjelicia/Wiseman
Lee/Moody/Mulder or GP2/Kuminga. That’s 12 deep if you don’t play the rookies.
They’ll be significantly better. Porter is a better fit than Oubre, Iggy>Wanamaker, Moody>Mannion, Kuminga>Smailagic/Bell, Bjelicia>Paschall, and eventually, Klay>Bazemore.
They’ll be fine. I’d be cool with signing Avery Bradley to something cheap but it’s not necessary. They brought in Chiozza, who they seem to like and has some NBA experience.
Unless they’re planning to move a 1st for Kyle Anderson or Lou Dort, at the deadline, they’re fine. Wouldn’t have been shocked if they were to have picked up Rondo though.
Jeff Teague could be interesting but he approaches that level of “is he that much better than a Poole/Iggy/Lee +GP2 or Mulder platoon?
There’s talk of a Monta Ellis comeback, that might be worth a 10-day too. Hopefully he’s matured a bit but he has been out of the NBA for some time so he’s a long shot. Dante Exum is there, but is he an upgrade over GP2, who has been in the system? Frank Ntilikina(23yo) would be interesting. As is Shaq Harrison, Ryan Arcidiacono.
Shabazz Napier and Matthew Dellavedova signed deals overseas, perhaps the Dubs can interest either of them in a return to the league?
Mike James, Tim Frazier? Langston Galloway and Tyler Johnson are out there too. At a certain point, it just gets back to GP2 knowing the system, Iggy playing 10-15 minutes a night and the hope that Poole can improve as a playmaker.
It wouldn’t be more surprising for Monta to return as a backup PG than it’d be for a Poole and Wiseman to morph into a bigger (6’4 and 7ft) version of LouWil and Trez(6’1/6’7) or for Poole to just average 3 or 4 apg. It’s not a huge job, it’s literally bringing the ball up the court and making timely passes. I think Iggy can show us a glimpse of what a 37yo Draymond could look like. Just playmaking and an elder statesman’s effort on defense. They’d be in the same spot if they nabbed Mitchell at 7 except the future wouldn’t be as bright. Patty Mills would’ve still been a top target, as you can’t entrust a rookie to be consistent in a crucial role anyways.
He played hard, and should give them some defense at the guard spot they could use, outside of just Sterling Brown. They have a couple of guys they can maybe still move to open up a spot or 2 for someone like Millsap, and potentially someone else that can help them defensively at a guard spot/on the wing behind Bullock, Green, and Brown…like Ntilikina or TLC
UC Santa Barbara, not Cal SB.
Dubs “discovered” Tyler Johnson. Would like him to be invited to camp for at least a workout
