10:00pm: The signing is official, per RealGM’s transactions log.
8:53pm: Marquese Chriss has agreed to a non-guaranteed contract with the Trail Blazers, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
Chriss played in just two games last season with the Warriors before suffering a broken right fibula in practice that ended his season. The Spurs acquired Chriss and his expiring contract in late March, then waived him a few days later.
Chriss has fully recovered from the injury, according to Charania, and will compete for a roster spot. Chriss appeared in 59 games with Golden State in 2019/20, including 21 starts, and averaged 9.3 PPG and 6.2 RPG in 20.3 MPG. He’s entering his sixth NBA season.
Portland has 13 players on fully guaranteed contracts, with Dennis Smith Jr. and Chriss among those expected to come to training camp on non-guaranteed deals. The Blazers may keep their 15th roster spot open to start the regular season, since they’re slightly over the tax line.
Guess he’s not going back to help out the Warriors.
WHAT ????! Say it isn’t so !!
Maybe Marc Gasol is available?
Marc Gasol’s career is over. Why are you and Marty excited about players that have proven that their careers are over.
I thought at this point Marc Gasol could be an Andrew Bogut “light.” Top of the key guy with an actual three-point shot that Bogut did not have, but decent passer, good Court vision, and understanding of the game. If you sag on the drivers or help on the shooters he’ll hit an open 3 for you.
He’s a backup center at this point and I think he would serve well on the Warriors… I would trade Mychal Mulder for him if that was available. Or pick him up for a minimum contract.
Seriously, have you ever watched a Warriors game. You don’t want a Center that is a ‘decent’ passer. They have to be a great passer. Why you and Marty prefer stiffs is beyond me. You need to start watching Warriors games, then get back to me.
@Howie
Dude you are super condescending .Gasol has been one of thr best passing centers in the game. His assists per 36 was 4 last year. Google broski..
@KnicksFan…Did you read about how Gasol rejected the Warriors in Free Agency? I think it is pretty clear that the Warriors are in a rebuild. 38 year olds don’t help that process.
You’re right Howie.., I’ve never watched a Warriors game. I guess I’ll get back to you…, never.
By the way who’s this “GREAT passing center” you propose the Warriors acquire?
What MC provided for GSW was a big body inside that bigger teams couldn’t push around. This is a big mistake for GSW. Their 2 centers get pushed around. Wiseman is too skinny last year and looney was pushed around by bigger players.
Gary I was about to make a sarcastic post myself about a sit & stare contest. I showed restraint, but did later anyway oh well. Good of you to find the time.
How would he have helped out the Warriors? He was a defensive liability. Please explain.
Howie I thought that Marquese Chriss was pretty decent. He could pass he could shoot a little bit and he didn’t make a lot of mistakes out there. He wasn’t a great one-on-one Defender but he could protect the rim a little and block a few shots, though he wasn’t strong enough for great rebounding position. He’s a third-string center and I wish him well.
I will give you that he was decent. I think he makes sense as a small forward. He is definitely not a center, or power forward.
Damn, that’s a steal. He’s a sneaky-good big who passes, drives and shoots. Warriors must be really far along with Collison to not take him.
Had there been any reports that the Warriors and Chriss had a mutual interest? I have not read or heard anything that indicated that. So I doubt it indicates anything about Collison’s situation.
If he healthy I don’t see how he doesn’t make this team
If he was a lock to make the team he would have received a guaranteed contract. Of course we all like to see Marty’s objective take acting like Marquese Chriss is a huge steal like Millsap or Aldridge were for Brooklyn.
And we all like to see you crowbar yourself into ever article about GS. Your obsession is bizarre.
Pretty sure it’s just to distract from his own homerism. And the comical names.
You thought that the Warriors suffered when they benched Eric Paschal. You said he was the key to the Warriors offense. You said the Warriors will suffer because they traded Paschal.
Not the warm fuzzy story Aldridge would have been – and I would have been all for that, for the record! – but maybe there will be upside here for Portland.
Aldridge has a lot of bridges to repair before he ever puts on the Blazer uniform again
Portland doesn’t want Aldridge back. He knows it. Too cowardly for the team he abandoned.
He played well for Warriors before getting hurt. I thought he was finally finding his groove. Thought for sure Warriors would sign him. This is a nice pickup for Blazers.
Neil Olshey is doing everything possible to drive Damian Lillard out of Portland because he is not building a winning team with Greg Brown, Dennis Smith Jr, Larry Nance Jr, Ben McLemore, Cody Zeller & Tony Snell.
Neil Olshey didn’t build a winning team with the Clippers & so far he hasn’t built a winning in Portland, Olshey should have been shown the door a few years ago or at least at the same time he showed Terry Stotts the door
Missed out on Millsap, and some other options still available at the 4, but they grabbed Nance, and now this. If he is healthy and continues to develop the way he has been trending, it’s a good fit, although they also need something from 1 of Nassir Little or Greg Brown. I’d like to see a depth wing option after they got rid of Derrick Jones, but not sure they have space on the roster, at this point. Even so, their wing depth, and options at the 4 are now the best they’ve been in years, although again, it would be that much stronger if they still had Jones
They need someone that can guard the guard spot, and either a pick and roll defending, rim protecting, rim rolling big or a floor spacing big
Yup the blazers are a mess formerlyz. Damian Lillard will ask to be traded by the deadline for sure. I don’t even know if there are a .500 team in the Strong West anymore. Their height was Conference Final two or three years ago.. or was it four? They’re done.
I feel like this is the opposite of what I was saying
Oh.., I didn’t realize you were thinking these moves were step in a positive direction. Especially when you said they still need more. Sorry I misunderstood.
Well ya they do still need more b/c they didnt address those areas yet, but they’ve addressed the 4 spot and mostly kept the wing spot strong, despite moving Derrick Jones
Good stuff formerlyz.
