Veteran guard Gerald Green worked out for the Rockets this week, Kelly Iko of The Athletic tweets. Houston also took a look at another longtime NBA guard, Monta Ellis, Rockets insider Alykhan Bijani tweets.
Green, 35, did not play in the league last season. He was invited to the Rockets training camp but was waived. He missed all of the previous season with a broken foot.
Green was a regular rotation player for the Rockets during the 2019/20 season, appearing in 73 games. He also appeared in 11 postseason games that season. In 658 career regular season games, Green averaged 9.7 PPG.
Ellis, who has been out of the league since 2017, also worked out for the Mavericks this week. During his 833 career regular season games, Ellis averaged 17.8 PPG. The Pacers used the stretch provision to distribute Ellis’ remaining salary after his last NBA season and he’s still on their books for $2.245MM. Ellis turns 36 next month.
The Rockets have 18 players on standard contracts, including 14 guaranteed deals, so it would be surprising if the rebuilding club signed either player.
They only have one roster spot available since Matthew Hurt is on a 2-way deal.
And that spot is expected to go to Anthony Lamb, either on a 2-way or exhibit 10.
It has to be said if you can’t make this team then maybe it’s time to hang it up
Not really, unless you think they’re better than any of Eric Gordon, Jalen Green, Kevin Porter, or Josh Christopher?(all registered as SG RN) plus Wall and Augustine at PG Houston back court is looking good. A good mix of vet and young.
Anyone saying that is only doing so based solely on the team’s record last season, and the low expectations of the upcoming season that go with it.
But much like the Warriors winning just 15 games two seasons go, followed up by 39 wins in 2021, Houston’s poised for their own bounce-back season despite the popular opinion that they will struggle just to win 25 games (which they should easily). They set an NBA record using 30 different players last season, not even including those who didn’t play like Exum.
And 24 of those 30 players started at some point when they had 43 different starting lineups in 72 games, which has to also be some sort of record.
This year’s team won’t have to deal with the historic combination of roster turnover and injuries that last year’s did. And if as many things go right this season as all the things went wrong last season, they could easily double their disastrous 17-game win total they suffered in 2020-21.
I loved Green when was with Rockets before getting hurt. Would love to see if still have stuff in tank. But know probably will not be.
I also saw that Daniel House is done with Houston and maybe looking to get something for him.
How can you say Green may have nothing in the tank after 2 and a half games and being sat as a precaution? He’s a top talent with a big future are are a lot of the 21 draft.
And considering the chatter of Green gunning for the No 4 I wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves sooner rather than later. He’s a good dept player for a contender. Useless in a rebuild.
He was referring to Gerald Green, of course, not Jalen Green.
With Danuel House refusing to give up his #4 to Jalen, he could be expediting his departure from the team long before Gordon or Wall.
Has that really been a big deal in Houston, House not giving up his number? Is that something that happens often, a vet giving up his number for a rookie, however heralded the rookie may be? (Not a sarcastic question, really wondering if that’s a thing.)
Happens often, for money. Not that much
Monte Ellis my god has this league fallen so short of talent that a monte Ellis gets a look see . That a laker team made up of buy outs, released, waived and salary dumped retread former all stars is considered a championship contender???. Wow.
If there was a senior league for the NBA like they have in golf, the Lakers would be a lock to win it all against nothing but a bunch of older players.
Sadly for you my friend LAL are contenders this year, PHI don’t have a single chance for the first time in a few years, maybe PHI should have tried to play the game that BRK & LAL are playing so masterfully, right?
Your grammar is brutal my friend and your argument invalid as the Sixers were the number 1 seed and had the number 1 ranked starting 5 in all of basketball. That being said jojo is al I need to say.
As I said they have been contenders for the last few years, specially last year… but as of now they ain’t contending for nothing this coming season, that might change of course!
I love myself some Embiid, an absolute beast of a player!
BTW many thanks for praising my grammar, really appreciate it mate!
Feels like this kind of workout is sort of a “why not?” for both sides — because what’s the harm, after all? It gives the players a little boost toward a comeback, probably not in the NBA but in another league anyhow. And maybe it makes the franchise look player-friendly?
Monta Ellis wtf kinda throwback is that might as well see if Bobby Jackson can lace em up. 02 sac kings were jobbed btw
