Having acquired Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma in a trade with the Lakers and used their first-round pick to draft Corey Kispert, the Wizards should have a few more outside shooting threats in 2021/22 than they did a year ago. However, that doesn’t mean Davis Bertans has become expendable, writes Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington.
As Hughes outlines, the Wizards will still have several players in their rotation who won’t effectively stretch the floor, and there’s no guarantee Kispert will be a reliable contributor right away as a rookie. Throw in the fact that Washington ranked 28th in the NBA last season in three-pointers made, and it’s clear the team isn’t in position to get rid of any shooters — especially one like Bertans, whose contract would be hard to trade, and who made 39.5% of his three-point attempts even in a down year in 2020/21.
Here’s more from around the Southeast:
- If everyone on the Magic‘s roster is fully healthy to start the 2021/22 season, Josh Robbins of The Athletic thinks Gary Harris and Jonathan Isaac would be the only two players assured of a spot in the starting lineup. Robbins views Wendell Carter as the most likely starter at center, with Markelle Fultz and Jalen Suggs in the mix for the point guard spot. Both Fultz and Suggs could theoretically start if Orlando is comfortable with a three-guard lineup, Robbins notes.
- The Magic are retaining Bruce Kreutzer and Dylan Murphy to be part of Jamahl Mosley‘s new coaching staff, reports Robbins (Twitter links). Both Kreutzer and Murphy served under Steve Clifford for the last three seasons in Orlando.
- In a mailbag for The Athletic, Chris Kirschner addresses a handful of Hawks-related questions, including inquiries on whether Atlanta is a realistic suitor for Ben Simmons, what the team’s chances are of repeating its 2021 playoff success, and what the roles Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter will play going forward. Kirschner likes the idea of pursuing Simmons if the price is fair and he’s willing to play a position besides point guard.
I’ve said it twice & I’ll say it again.. Ben Simmons, Tyrese Maxey & the rights to Charles Bassey for (DeAndre Hunter or Cam Reddish), Onyeka Okongwu, Danilo Gallinari, Lou Williams, Atl’s 2022 2nd & Atl’s 2023 1st is a very good deal for both sides
We’ll stop saying it. Lou can’t be traded, he just signed. And it’s an awful idea. He’s the only reason the Hawks won the series. I like him better playing for the other team.
Lou can definitely be traded. He just RE-signed. He would have the chance to turn it down if he wanted to but for numerous reasons I doubt that he would… Obviously you’re an idiot if you think our backup pg/8th man was the only reason that the Hawks beat Philly lol but if it’s such an awful proposal I’m sure you can come up with more of a reason than Lou. He’s the least important part of the deal
Free agents can’t be traded for 3 months, so Lou can’t be moved until December
You’re correct on the 3 months but he will actually be trade eligible on November 4th.
He’s not a free agent. We resigned him last month. Guys get signed & traded all the time. Either way we could easily just sub Delon Wright for Lou in the deal. Lou is literally the least important part of the equation
Yes players get signed and traded all the time but only after the first 3 months have past and they become trade eligible.
Also Lou would technically be the most important part if his inclusion negates the trade from a CBA standpoint. Speaking of the CBA, Wright cannot be included in a trade with other players for 2 months. So your simple swap is also a moot point. Please try and do some research before throwing ineligible trade proposals out there.
Then Sharife Cooper instead lol… the point is that Lou or Delon or even Sharife or whoever the backup pg they get (while impactful) is far less important than the other 4 assets that Philly is getting in the deal.. so same deal with Sharife instead of Lou… Now what’s the issue lol
I think you’re missing the point. The three PGs you swap in and out of the trade all have different value to a trade partner. Lou is a great bench scorer but does little else to provide value and has a salary of $5MM. Wright is a more balanced player who is coming off a career season for $9.35MM. Finally Cooper is signed to a two-way contract and hasn’t produced much in his limited time in the league. So to say all three are just filler isn’t true when two clearly provide value and add come with larger salaries while one is clearly just filler.
And back your question about what the issue is…you clearly don’t understand how players are valued in the NBA since you’re wanting Philly to accept role players and a likely 20ish draft pick for one on the top young players in the league. 5 nickels do not equal a quarter in the NBA. So unless your offering up 3-4 dimes which have the potential to become a quarter no GM in Morey’s position will consider your offer.
FYI any trade proposal involving Simmons would need to start with Collins. It’s that simple.
Philly would definitely want Dre more than John. First off John & Tobi Harris are very similar & both best at the 4. Dre is a prototypical 3 & fits much better into the 76ers frontcourt than John. Also Dre is much better defensively which is something they’re gonna need after losing Ben. Dre is also much cheaper & has a higher ceiling
Which one are you saying is filler? They’re all 3 guys that Philly would want on their team. Especially as the 4th or 5th best asset that they’d be getting in this deal… smh if you think that Dre & Onyeka are just role players then you either haven’t seen them play or just suck at evaluating talent. They’re both high draft picks that are still on their rookie contracts that have already proven that they were worth the top6 picks that were used on them. Both guys have all-star potential. Young guys with that type of potential are extremely hard to acquire, especially for a team like Philly that hasn’t had a lottery pick of their own in a few yrs. Also I’m not sure you understand what Morey’s position is lol. He’s not in a position of power here at all. He might have to take 4 nickels for his quarter if that’s the best offer he gets bc the quarter has made it clear that he’s out. ALSO it seems obv that you have failed to realize that my trade proposal is pretty much exactly what your parameters are that you lay out in your last sentence. You say it would take an offer of 3-4 dimes with potential to become quarters… DeAndre Hunter, Onyeka Okongwu, Sharife Cooper & a 1st rd pick… there u go right there
You believing Hunter has more value Collins and Cooper is considered a dime like Hunter, Okongwu and a future 1st tells me all I need to know about your evaluating abilities. Enjoy your weekend.
Dre has more value to Philly than John yes. I gave you multiple reasons that I have yet to see you refute. As far as Sharife Cooper if you don’t know about him you should do a lil research
Regardless of “fit” John Collins is the better player which is why Philly would want him. His value is higher than Hunter’s based on his overall production in the NBA. Hunter regressed as a shooter last season and is coming off an injury which has dropped his value some.
Why do I need to do research on Cooper? Clearly Atlanta doesn’t value him enough to offer him a guaranteed contract which means he’s considered a developmental project and not a dime like you’re making him out to be. Was he a good college player? Yes but how many great college players never amount to anything in the NBA? How about you provide me with the reason(s) the Hawks’ front office assessment is off and he should be considered anything more than salary filler?
Furthermore, Cooper shot a measly 39% in college which tells me his shot selection is poor and he’s an inefficient volume scorer.
Trae will still run the offense, so Ben will bring the same destabilization to the Hawks that he is doing with the 6ers, and another big decision and hoo-hah will have to play out. The meaning of hoo-hah is quite flexible, being unreal!
I think, Reddish would make a similar PG to Simmons, and like Simmons would benefit most teams that have a 12345 system (with an on-court supplementary guard). The point&wings system, now popular… not so much. The names for these systems are about official as “hoo-hah”. Coaches like to claim all advantages for whatever they run and have not named their designs.
In other matters, no this is not the time to trade Bertans, coming off a year with Westbrook. Selling low is not an optimal idea, even if it’s called “dumping”.
1st paragraph is incomprehensible. As far as Cam Reddish he’s never been a pg & never will be. He’s not similar to Ben at all offensively but they’re very similar defensively. Everything else you said is basically jibberish
Says the gibberish spouting homer.
Sankara lets be simpler then. Why would Hawks trade for a starting PG when they have one and on max? Dumb idea. You can say Simmons is not a PG but you’re not Simmons holding out. You’re a nobody.
If you know anything about Ben’s game you know that he can play pretty much any position offensively or defensively. He’s extremely versatile, he could easily play alongside Trae, both those guys have extremely high bball iq. Lol at the rest
What he’s trying to say is they are both at their best with the ball and there is only one ball to share between them which means someone’s game will not be optimized when on the floor together.
And what I have said repeatedly is that Ben Simmons is equally good on or off the ball. His versatility is a huge part of what makes him such a great basketball player. Trae is extremely effective off the ball too tbh. His shooting efficiency will definitely be much higher if he could play with a guy like Ben. Those are 2 guys that just know how to play the game, similar to Bron/Russ, similar to Harden/Kyrie, similar to Jokic/Murray. Trae & Ben would THRIVE together & it should really be sorta obv to anybody that’s watched those 2 guys play the past few yrs
When have you ever seen Ben Simmons playing significant minutes off the ball?
Literally every game he plays. He didn’t initiate the offense every possession he was in Philly. He is incredible at running the lane & finishing in transition. He’s a great cutter playing off the ball & we’ve seen many examples of this throughout his career. He’s a great lead guard & initiator of offense but he spends alot of time off the ball just coolin at the rim in the dunk spot as well & he’d be a big weapon for the Hawks that way too. I feel like y’all don’t watch the games lol this is basic stuff. Ben also played more off the ball than lead guard when Philly traded for Jimmy Butler that year
Btw I believe j_butte was referring to Simmons being the reason the Hawks won the series against Philly not Lou Williams.
Name a basketball player in the world who guards Trae Young better than Ben Simmons does?
Right. Simmons is a PG. Why do you want both players?
If you know anything about Ben’s game you know that he can play pretty much any position offensively or defensively. He’s extremely versatile, he could easily play alongside Trae, both those guys have extremely high bball iq
You’re missing the point. He was referring to Simmons not shooting the ball when underneath the basket as the reason why the Hawks won the series.
If your point was that that 1 play was the reason Philly lost then you’re an idiot. I mean obviously that’s a dumb thing just to think, & to say it multiple times across numerous usernames lol that’s just idiotic. Kevin Huerter destroyed Philly in that game, he’s the main reason Atl won that gm7 but there were many reasons we won. Doc taking Ben off of Trae late in the 4th is another huge reason we won. Ben was shutting Trae down that entire game then late in the 4th Doc put Thybulle on Trae & Trae cooked him down the stretch along with Kev cookin Seth as well. Tobias struggled mightily as well. It obv wasn’t bc of 1 mistake by Ben that they lost. Did you even see the game?
It doesn’t matter whether Ben can play off the ball or not. It is his choice and he is going way out of his way to make it. It is not Sankara’s choice.
You can’t trade for Simmons and say let Trae have the ball. You will just get the same holdout. How can you not even understand this as a point of view? Are you retarded? People like him as a 4 but he’s not having it, likely not a 2 either. This could be right or wrong but is not “jibberish”.
Why else do you think Simmons is holding out, been holding out effort? Do you think that question should be understood & answered before pulling the trigger on a trade?
Haliburton & Mitchell could go off-ball, or FVV, or Nunn. Lillard could at least until the end-game. But not Trae.
I read that Hawks offered only two players
Gallo and Reddish
76ers don’t need to pay luxury tax after the deal
By bold statement
76ers won’t be able to trade for any of top 30 point guards except Brogdon and DLo
Where you read that?
Sullivan claimed it. I haven’t seen it before but I like it. If Indy is going to a point&wings system, not sure where Brogdan fits. He wants to be PG but seems to prefer to operate in the wings. Not sure about Levert either, more like a wing but likes to attack the middle.
Why would Atl want Simmons? Ball stays in Young’s hands, they have Hunter and Johnson at the 4, makes no sense.
Because most fans think real life basketball is like 2k and you can just play whoever together.
Realistically the pieces that Daryl would want for Simmons are pieces ATL wouldn’t give up. It’s actually really difficult to find a trade for Ben in the league.
Gotta love how knickheat & philliesfan215, who are certainly the same person using (at least) 2 different usernames, criticize my trade offer using the dumbest argument ever but are scared to allow me to reply to their comment lol.. dont be scared lmao
Bad knee or not I like Hunter’s chances of becoming that force we need in becoming a great player. And why Ben Simmons?
