Former Sixers star Allen Iverson would be interested in working for an NBA team, he said during a conversation with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report (video link; hat tip to RealGM). Iverson told Rooks that he’s “forgotten more basketball than some people know” and would love to put his expertise to use by helping current NBA players — especially if he could so in Philadelphia with his old team.
“I’m a Sixer for life. I’ve got Sixer blood pumping through me. Everybody knows that I want to help that organization,” Iverson said. “I’ve been retired, what, 11 years? I don’t know how I’m not a part of that staff (in) some kind of way.”
Iverson added that he’s not necessarily interested in being “the guy that’s right up front” (ie. a head coach) and that even just being a consultant for the Sixers would make him happy.
Here’s more from around the Atlantic:
- Addressing reports that the Sixers and Pacers have discussed a potential Ben Simmons trade, Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer says that if the 76ers can get Malcolm Brogdon, Caris LeVert, and a future first-round pick in exchange for Simmons, they should pull the trigger. Philadelphia and Indiana have reportedly discussed both Brogdon and LeVert, though it’s unclear if either club has made an offer along those lines.
- Raptors forward Yuta Watanabe is battling a left calf strain and won’t be available for Thursday’s game in Philadelphia, tweets Blake Murphy of The Athletic. As Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca tweets, the injury is considered minor, so hopefully it won’t affect Watanabe’s standing as he fights for a spot on Toronto’s 15-man regular season roster.
- While Scottie Barnes is drawing far more interest, the Raptors‘ “other” rookies – Dalano Banton and Justin Champagnie – are also vying for playing time, as Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca details. Given the team’s roster turnover and injury issues, there are opportunities in the rotation available for the taking, Grange writes for Sportsnet.ca.
- Al Horford‘s return to Boston reunites him with Robert Williams, who considered Horford a veteran role model during his previous stint with the Celtics. Jared Weiss of The Athletic spoke to the two big men about their relationship during Williams’ rookie year in 2018/19 and how they can help one another going forward.
I’m a big fan of all 3 of those Raptors. They all play hard, defend, are versatile…that whole roster is full of guys like that, with shooting around them. I keep saying it, but I really think they’re super dangerous. Obviously they’re missing Boucher and Siakam, which will hurt a bit, but they have so much versatility. Boucher feels like the bigger miss right now b/c of his shooting, and their several options at the 4 spot…
Really want to see Barnes get good minutes as a PG in certain lineups
I’m Broke! Hook Me up with a job! I’ll probably show up for most practices!
Practice. Talking bout practice!
Sad but true dude had a TON of leeches on the payroll.
don’t think he’s in any financial danger with his 800k a year for life reebok deal plus a 32 mil trust fund that was also set up and can access when he’s 55 and weed company he just started.
Current market trade value
Simmons + Maxey = Brogdon + LaVert
In my book
Terrible trade for the Sixers, so no.
This trade is why I can’t take this place seriously. So the sixers trade a 3time all star(who cares what u personal think of him, in trade talks that’s irrelevant) for 2 injury prone players who have trouble staying on the court. All while throwing in a young talent on a rookie deal who is already outperforming his current contract. This place is a joke when it comes to trade
Any team except the Clippers, Lakers or Warriors would have to have assurances that Simmons is on board with the trade before sending out assets for a player who may just continue to sit out or just crater the team. I wouldn’t throw in Maxey if I’m the 76ers but I’d definitely take Brogdon and Warren or LaVert with the 1st round pick.
I wouldn’t take back both LaVert and Brodgon. Also like we said before Simmons signed the deal. If he gets traded and keeps sitting out. Then the league would know what we already know. It’s a Ben problem.
Warren and Brogdon would be better. Can you imagine how lethal a Brogdon/Embiid pick and roll flanked by Curry, Warren and Harris would be?
There is some underrating of Pacer players going on.
Just say you would rather Simmons sit out all year and get sued than take a trade.
It’s what the league thinks. Obviously they don’t believe Simmons is worth as much as Philadelphia fans believe he’s worth considering no team has made a blockbuster offer.
But the Sixers aren’t gonna get a great trade, regardless. That trade mentioned above is a good one for them. Getting Brogdon and LeVert (IF he can stay healthy) is borderline great for them at this point. They’re not getting Lillard, Beal, Durant, Magic, Bill Russell….
Stop watching basketball if that’s truly what you think. If you’re trolling then carry on.
It’s funny when they are players and say “we don’t owe the team anything”
Then when they retire, “we’re the love”.
It’s the same as when teams say “we want you to stay, take a hometown discount” the player does it and is traded a year or two later.
That’s true. So basically I agree. The player owes the team nothing and the team owes the player nothing. I was waiting for this post. Thank u.
I think the key thing with a trade return for Simmons has to be 2 starters for the price of 1 plus a first round pick.
Be it 2 from Brogdan, LeVert or TJ Warren. However all three have or have had injury issues so maybe 2 first. I’d be happy with any combination. Brogdan is a good defender, nice playmaker and efficient shooter. LeVert when healthy has a really good offensive game and Warren when healthy was a beast in the bubble.
We have Embiid Harris and Green as the 5, 4 and then Green as either 2/3.
Then off the bench we have loads of depth and versatility with Maxey, Milton, Curry, Korkmaz, Thybulle, Niang, Reed and Drummond. That’s before we dive into recent draft picks Springer, Joe and Bassey.
Totally agree with AI it beggars believe PHI hasn’t bended backwards to get him in the organization, I mean if you ask me in the last 40 years who has symbolized MR PHI, I would say no one has been more the face of the franchise than AI… so the team should have come to him a decade ago & say… ok, dude, what you wanna do, anything you want, we are here for you…
Sadly this summer PHI has shown the world what a classless organization they are… so I am afraid they will never even do the right thing for AI, SMH!
Give me LeVert, Brogdon and Holiday for Ben and Shake.
Deepest team in the East.
Brogdon, Maxey
LeVert, Curry, Holiday, Joe, Springer
Green, Thybulle, Korkmaz
Harris, Niang, Reed
Embiid, Drummond, Bassey
I could get behind that. Does the salary work
Nope. Usually I’m better than that. Didn’t realize LeVert made 17.5M. Would work if they added Joe or Springer tho.
I doubt that the Pacers would offer both Brogden and LeVert in a trade for Simmons, unless there’s more to it, or they’re looking to rejigger the roster in a quasi-rebuild. They’d have nothing on the perimeter. A non-starter in this era.
Iverson would be great because he’d make sure all the Sixers took practice seriously.
Not even a game. Just talking about practice.
Can Iverson teach Simmons how to not be apprehensive and how to shoot the ball?
