A maximum-salary rookie scale extension wouldn’t have been a realistic starting point for the Cavaliers in their negotiations with Collin Sexton, and it wasn’t something Sexton’s camp ever demanded, sources tell Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
According to Fedor, Sexton’s representatives initially sought a contract in the $100MM range, but wasn’t stuck on that number and was open to negotiating a deal with a lower total salary. However, the two sides ultimately couldn’t reach an agreement, putting the fourth-year guard on track for restricted free agency in 2022.
“The approach is still the same,” Sexton said after Monday’s extension deadline passed, per Fedor. “I’m just coming in ready to work. We’ve got one goal and that’s to win and get to the playoffs. I was disappointed. But that doesn’t take away from the teammates itself. We’re going to figure it out, and we’re going to win basketball games together and have a good season. … I know they want me here. So, just a little disappointed, but at the end day, we move on.”
Here’s more from around the Central:
- Since going undrafted out of Gonzaga in 2015, Kevin Pangos has spent six years overseas, gradually becoming one of the top guards in Europe. Now, having signed this summer with the Cavaliers, Pangos is finally getting to live his NBA dream, Fedor writes for Cleveland.com. “Every single year I would have liked to be in the NBA. But I just tried to control what I could control and know that the spot I was in, I was there for a reason and I hadn’t quite earned it yet,” Pangos said. “There was a lot of growing I had to do on and off the floor, as a person and a player. I think that allowed me to get to the point where I am today.”
- No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham, who is recovering from a minor ankle injury, won’t play in the Pistons‘ regular season opener on Wednesday, but he could make his NBA debut before the end of the month. As Rod Beard of The Detroit News relays, general manager Troy Weaver said during a radio appearance on Wednesday that he anticipates “hopefully seeing (Cunningham) when we get back off the road.” Following Wednesday’s home opener, Detroit has a three-game road trip, then returns home on October 30, so that could be a tentative target date.
- Pacers wing Kelan Martin, who pushed his guarantee date back twice this offseason in the hopes of making the team, did so again after earning a 15-man roster spot, according to Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files (Twitter link). Although Martin’s $1.7MM still isn’t fully guaranteed, he did receive a partial guarantee this week, says Agness.
Lmao what were dude team
Thinking if he thought 100 mill was smart to ask for . He only had a few seasons and it wasn’t worth 100 mill. He worth just as much as guys like kuz make till he prove himself
Dude what? From what I got, you are saying be is worth as much as Kyle Kuzma? To that I say “Lmao what were dude you
thinking”
@mrshyguy
you’re English is confusing but I get that you don’t think he’s worth $100 mil because he had, in your words, 1 season. He averaged 24 pts on 47/37/81 shooting. Only Kyrie, Beal, Lavine, Rozier, Brogdon, Lillard, Curry and Middleton were guards that scored 20+ on 45+/35+/80+ shooting. It’s his 2nd year of accomplishing that feat. To say he doesn’t deserve it when MJ Porter got his huge deal off of 1 standout season and SGA got his deal with similar offensive numbers boggles my mind. Yes, you can say he’s not posting great passing numbers but he’s been moved off of PG duties but still increased his apg to 4.5 pg last year just 1.5 less than SGA who was the primary pg for OKC. He absolutely is worth at least $100 mil and the fact that they LITERALLY tripped over themselves to give Allen $100 mil in a relatively soft market for his services boggles my mind. The Cavs have REALLY messed up the handling of Sexton. They devalued his trade market by letting rumors they were willing to give him away go undisputed until after it was clear they were being lowballed. They could’ve come out and said the old “we’re not actively looking to trade him buyin djing our due diligence we’re listening on offers for everyone and a lot of teams like Sexton but we like him too and I can’t imagine trading him”. Now, you’re telling the market not only are you trying to move him (for what I have no idea) but you’re half heartedly negotiating for his extension. This kid has had 4 different coaches in his 3 seasons. I blame his defensive issues partially on them. Offensively, I have no problem with him. He’s like most other guards that are score first guys. he’s not a black hole and usage rate means little so long as the efficiency is there. he’s far from ball dominant the way Wall, Westbrook and others are. He’s not a volume scorer, he’s just a bucket waiting to happen.
Cade had a major strain, stop saying it’s minor and he hasn’t played in a month.
Maybe he is just soft, right?
Right, there’s no point in rushing him back before he’s 100% healthy.
Sixers could’ve traded Simmons for KLove, Sexton, a first and a second.
Then given Sexton a extension 5 years 100mil plus incentives (25m) which would look like an absolute bargain in the future.
KLove, who I don’t particularly like that much, I think would’ve actually been a good addition for us. Last year he put up 12/7/2.5 shooting 41/37/82, which isn’t great but the season before that he put up 18/10/3 shooting 45/37/85.
So yes he’s old and his contract is terrible and he had a bad season but year before that he was actually pretty good. He would be perfect for us as a back up PF/C. Championship experience, floor spacing ability, good rebounding, good free throw shooting, and decent passing the ball.
Now we still might be able to make this trade but we won’t be able to extend Sexton until the end of the season when he hits RFA and likely gets a max offer we have to match.
