The Hornets have engaged in discussions about a possible rookie scale contract extension for forward Miles Bridges, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Bridges is one of 18 players who remains eligible for a rookie extension up until the October 18 deadline.
Scotto says that some people around the NBA believe $20MM per year would be the floor for Bridges on a new deal. That’s the same price that has been frequently projected for another Bridges with a similar skill set: Mikal Bridges of the Suns.
Here are a few updates from Scotto on possible rookie scale extensions:
- The Suns and sharpshooter Landry Shamet have been having ongoing conversations about a possible extension, with one source suggesting that the odds of the two sides reaching a deal are about 50-50, says Scotto. Shamet has yet to appear in a regular season game for his new team, but Phoenix had reportedly coveted him for a while.
- Scotto suggests that Hawks wing Kevin Huerter could get “Joe Harris type of money,” adding that some people around the league think Huerter’s value is in the neighborhood of $18MM annually. Harris signed a four-year, $72MM contract with Brooklyn during the 2020 offseason.
- The Wizards and Aaron Holiday aren’t discussing an extension, but Washington likes the 25-year-old and will likely evaluate him over the course of the 2021/22 season, according to Scotto.
- Extensions for Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons and Bulls swingman Troy Brown appear unlikely, per Scotto.
$20m a year for role players is how you end up in the draft lottery.
Any hawks fans in here. 72mil over 4 seems like a lot for Huerter. Just want a hawks fan opinion.
He definitely improved his contract with his playoff performance. They also signed Bogdanovic to this same contract last off season interestingly enough. Obviously you’d want to get him at a discount, but 18 mil isn’t insanely outrageous IMO. Gallo can come off the books after the season so they aren’t in a position where paying Huerter is going to hamstring them.
So in short, yes probably a slight overpay for a player who is still rather streaky, but if he hits RFA next offseason, I think he’d get 18 mil in a heartbeat.
Huerter is way better than Bogdanovic, so that 72/4 is the bare minimum, probably he should be looking more into the 80-90/4, that seems more realistic to me!
72/4 seems like way to much personally.
Most his stats got worse going from year 2 to year 3. He averaged 12-3-3.5 shooting 43-36-78.
Those are some boring bland vanilla average numbers. He was ranked 145 in scoring last season wow. 2 spots above Hami Diallo who signed a 2/10 contract, 1 spot above Malik Monk who got himself the minimum.
Joe Ingles who averaged more points, assists and rebounds signed a 1 year 13mil deal, Josh Richardson who averages similar numbers just got a 1 year 12mil extension.
The Hawks have have Trae Young who is going to be a superstar. You have J Collins as the second option, a promising young bunch of players Hunter, Reddish, Hueter and Okungwu. Plus a bunch of role playing vets Bogi, Gallo and Capela. You should be building around Trae and looking to go big. You’ve already given Collins the max and now your talking about giving Kevin 18/20 mil, Cmon man.
Hawks should be targeting getting in another star to go with Trae.
I would resign Huerter. He already has chemistry with the team and he can create his own shot. Hunter has knee issues and Cam is nothing but potential as of right now. Bogi and Gallo can come off the books, could get some picks.
Of course a re-sign is good, but how much is the offer. I think the Hawks wait because he didnot improve from an 11PER level. 2/$26 if no improvement. His D was alright.
4/$80 for MilesB seems high too, considering he lacks a position. He is fortunate the team got Lamelo to find him.
Miles bridges for 20m/yr is too high
I’m a hornets fan and love his fit with lamelo but he hasn’t proven to be anything worth that on either end of the floor.
If he sets up defensively to be a wing stopper and proves his 3pt his real and consistent, then yes.
Right now, with the condition of RFA (zero offer sheets signed last year), only an inept FO would reach to do an extension with a rising RFA. These guys (particularly those who were mid to late 1st round picks) should be the ones motivated to get the security, and willing to give a significant discount on their best case to get it. If they aren’t, let it play out. Does anyone really think Huerter has any real chance of commanding significantly more than 18 mm / year in next year’s RFA market?
Last year rookie extensions tended to come in high, but did not pay off high for the teams.
