3:34pm: The Celtics have officially waived Parker, according to the team (Twitter link).
1:39pm: The Celtics are set to waive veteran forward Jabari Parker ahead of the 2021/22 regular NBA season, writes Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe.
Parker signed a multiyear deal with Boston last season, but his salary for ’21/22 was only partially guaranteed for $100K. By moving on from Parker, the Celtics will open up a spot on their regular 15-man roster. The team also still has an open two-way contract slot.
Jared Weiss of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that Boston, which projects to be a taxpayer this season, intends to keep its 15th roster spot open for the time being.
After being selected with the second draft pick out of Duke by the Bucks in 2014, Parker showed plenty of promise as a versatile scorer before being felled by two ACL tears, the first during his 2014/15 rookie season with Milwaukee and the second during the 2016/17 season.
Since being made a free agent by the Bucks in 2018, Parker has logged time with his hometown Bulls, then the Wizards, Hawks, and Kings before joining the Celtics during the spring of 2021. He appeared in just 10 games with the Celtics last year, averaging 6.4 PPG and 3.6 RPG across 13.8 MPG with Boston.
The 6’8″ power forward, 26, will hope to catch on with his seventh NBA club for an eighth NBA season.
I liked Parker a lot coming out of Duke. Then he just got fat and out of shape and his career went flat after that.
Injuries do that
Yup. It’s become a 3 & D league for anyone who isn’t a legitimate All-NBA talent, which maybe, to be fair, injuries prevented Parker from becoming (maybe).
But, in any case, he’s a career 32% 3P shooter and has never even sniffed mediocrity defensively.
Thought for a while maybe he could subsist as a 6th man score-only dude, but it’s looking more likely he’s probably Euro-bound.
Agreed , it’s hard to work on moving your feet and agility while dealing with an ACL.
Obviously we’ll never know, but there’s reason to believe he could’ve become a rotation guy.
At this point he’s a relic as a 12th man , would like to see the Bucks reunion or the 76ers get “their guy” 7 years later..
Am I the only one who read “26” and immediately thought “Yeah that’s a typo, he’s gotta be 36.”
JP is really only 26….
He will probably end up on the Lakers.
It’s incredible after those 2 knee injuries that the guy hasn’t figured out a way to redefine his game. He still has time, hopefully he will
all waived team. jabari, giles, stauskas, exum, dunn, chriss, and knight.
Giles, Exum, and Knight were, in fairness, legitimately derailed by injuries.
Stauskas, in fairness, was probably never that good.
Chriss, Dunn, and Jabari, in fairness, are legit busts.
I wouldn’t call Jabari a bust. Disappointing for his draft status? Sure, but not a bust. Even though injuries limited his games played, he did average double figures for his first 6 years.
Yeah you’re right. He’s definitely not in the class of Chriss and Dunn.
I think having two ACL tears might put him in your detailed by injuries category maybe?
Chilling…
Parker had a 100K guaranteed.
I’m a 70 yo long time Warriors fan and still fondly remember Sonny Parker in the back court, so … kinda root for his son … Yeah, injuries can sure kill a promising sports career. At least nowadays , a high pick has always made enough money to live on for the rest of his life (IF he’s at all sensible about handling his moolah, that is).
He gave offense off the bench. He played well for Celtics in playoffs. He deserves a shot.
I would agree
I’m shocked! Jabari was practicing his three point shot at the end last year. Then he shot it well this preseason!
On the other hand, it’s all about squeezing profits from your business with the Celtics’ hedge fund owners and that mentality.
Who knows? Hopefully Langford or Nesmith or someone will take Jabari’s minutes and shine. I’ll trust Brad Stevens for now.
Kind of surprised but I guess there are so many roster spots.
Biggest bust of that decade
Anthony Bennett is still the biggest draft bust of the 2010’s definitely.
I think it is pretty safe to remove the qualifier and say he is arguably the biggest NBA draft bust of all time.
Well… Markelle Fultz says hi.
Yes, perhaps, but Fultz is still in the league. Bennett was not asked back by Lakers’ G-league team a couple of years ago. He was absolutely terrible.
GMs doubling down on a mistake. That’s all. Fultz showed enough each year til his option was picked up and then that ill advised extension. If Bennett were drafted by that clown Coleangelo he’d have a max contract.
But I get your point. There are a lot of busts or simply latcher-ons because of draft status tho from 2010-2019.
Yes Bennett is a once in a lifetime level bust. Although that class as a whole was very very weak at the top. MCW was ROY.
McCollum was probably the best lottery pick. And was drafted #10. And he’s never made an AS team.
In fact, with Giannis and Gobert in the back half of the first round I’m not sure there’s ever been a more upside down draft that I can think of.
Toss up between 2013 and 2014. The best pick of 2014 was Jokic in the second round. Embiid is good, but has played fewer career games than Jabari Parker.
Not even the worst #2 pick of the 2010s decade. Evan Turner and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were arguably worse and Marvin Bagley may end up worse. But all 4 of them were much better than Derrick Williams, the #2 pick in 2011.
If the Sixers didnt have Niang and Reed, I’d say Sixers. That being said, I think Magic seem like the type of team hed land on.
He’s a vet now with a purpose. Been thru a lot for 26 yrs old. I think playing for a young team is a good idea. To me the guy can still get buckets.
