Sixers center Joel Embiid has been slowed by pain in his right knee and wasn’t able to walk for two days after hurting it in the season opener last Wednesday, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. Shelburne made the comments during an appearance on NBA Today (video link), adding that Embiid is determined to continue playing because Ben Simmons isn’t available.
Embiid has appeared in all four of Philadelphia’s games, although he’s averaging career lows so far with 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per night. Simmons told the team last week that he’s not mentally ready to play, and it’s uncertain when he might return.
Embiid is also trying to lead by example and is motivated by his second-place finish in last season’s MVP race, Shelburne adds. He appeared in just 51 games in 2020/21, which was one of the arguments some voters made for not supporting him.
Embiid suffered a small meniscus tear in his right knee during the first round of the playoffs, but was able to continue playing until the Sixers were eliminated. The pain flared up after he banged knees with Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas last week, and Shelburne said there’s a feeling that “maybe he should sit a game or two” to help relieve it.
There’s more from Philadelphia:
- President of basketball operations Daryl Morey said this week that “things seem to be moving very much in a positive direction” with Simmons (video link). He added that the team is working with Simmons to provide “every resource to help him with what is needed.”
- Until the Simmons situation is resolved, it will loom as a threat to team chemistry, contends Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Simmons still prefers to be traded, and the rotation is likely to undergo a shakeup whenever that happens. There are also players on the roster who could be headed elsewhere in a Simmons deal. “There’s obviously uncertainty,” Tobias Harris said. “Personally myself, I look at all of the uncertainty as a positive of what could happen. And in reality, the biggest thing is to just stay in the moment.”
- Tyrese Maxey is experiencing “growing pains” as he tries to handle the lead guard role in Simmons’ absence, Pompey adds. Maxey is a combo guard who isn’t used to running the offense, and he didn’t have an assist until the fourth quarter in Tuesday night’s loss to the Knicks.
Embiid has a 4 year window before he turns into “rigor” Artis Gilmore.
Sadly, I think four years is probably optimistic. Even at his healthiest Embiid hasn’t been that healthy.
Big dudes who have injury-plagued 20’s usually don’t make it past 30 in the league.
If Embiid goes down, then 76ers will be down too.
Morey, Brand and Rivers got $25 million salary per year, they downgraded the team.
Why didn’t they bring up some top tier young talents?
@Sillivan
You speak as if these are the Philadelphia Phillies with a AAA, AA A+, A-, Rookie ball and Dominican Summer league teams teeming with talent waiting to be called up. Top teams seldom find themselves drafting in the lottery nor can they afford to give major minutes to unproven rookies. Sixers are trying to bring Maxey and Thybulle around tho.
Guess we could start a countdown to when Embiid will suffer a disastrous injury to keep him out many months or more. As he tries to push through troublesome injuries to keep the team afloat, it’s just a matter of time before something gives on the big guy. The big lug appears to be equal parts lovable and foolish. When will he learn that he must maintain discipline to keep his body intact?
Embiid missed the first Two And A Half seasons of his career with a foot injury and has a career high of 64 games played in a season.
The last thing he should be doing is pushing through an injury.
No Philly fans blaming Simmons for Embiid playing through injuries right now? Asking for a friend
Andre drummond is looking like a really good fantasy player now
The smartest guy in the room and the smartest coach in the the league can spin all they want … sit back and enjoy the slow moving collapse of all collapses.

Go figure… career lows. Ben Simmons made Embiid look like an MVP. Now he will look more like Porzingis.
He’s been playing through an injury since opening night. It’s right up there in the article you’re commenting on. I don’t doubt that Simmons makes him better, but you’re overstating it. Go watch some highlights from yesterday’s game against the Knicks. He doesn’t look 100%.
Right.. he’s been playing thru injury his entire career. What’s new? Oh, yeah.. he won’t be playing with BS anymore and his stats will start looking like Porzingis. Perhaps KP will likely have a resurgence with Doncic. Embiid.. ha! Over-rated and has to carry the team alone. Good luck with that.
Did embiid date your mom then turn you into the red headed stepchild ? That’s a lot of hate for someone who when healthy is a top player in the league
OK. You sound like a Sixers fan.. disrespectful, rude, no class. This is the culture that basically pushed BS out and left your lover boy all alone. As I stated before, good luck winning with Embiid… he is actually the unreliable player on this team, not Simmons, and now the fate of the team rests with him? Good luck with that.
No reason why an injury from last yrs playoffs. Should be affecting him now. Embiid is brittle. This should only amplify the need to move Ben already. It’s only putting more pressure on him. Embiid needs a real PG. Someone who makes the gm easier for him. Like CP3 did for Jordan in LA. Only got him a max contract. Why Moreyon doesn’t go and get Haliburton. What are Sixers waiting for. Embiid to go down again. The Knicks just crushed you. The Knicks. You really don’t see the significance of this. From contender to also ran. Banged up Embiid no Ben. Sixers might not be top six in East. “The Process”
NoIQAl!!! It’s been too long my friend. Let’s see maybe the reason they don’t go get Halliburton is because the kings have repeating said they won’t trade him.
The 76ers are, for all intents and purposes, DONE.
Process: failed
Cut bait with Doc after this season. Or during (“agree to part ways”).
No good vet free agents will come play for him.
Respect him? Yes.
Want to play for him? Nah
He got his money and that’s his main concern.
Man get up to speed, the most outrageously ignorant opinions one reads in this site is how the process failed!
I mean it was stopped & unfinished, no longer a thing, like at the time GSW started their dynasty…
Just as well you can claim that Magic’s LA showtime is struggling this year!
@jump
Rivers was never apart of the “process” and neither was Morey really Once Simmons was drafted and they added Tobias and others and became real ECF contenders then the process was complete. I think Philly would have no problem playing for Rivers and not sure why you think they would. Simmons comments wouldn’t even matter imo.
Yeah… you’re right.
Wth hell would I know about nba basketball – ESPECIALLY the 76ers? lol
