The Sixers have waived Shaquille Harrison, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. He’s expected to join the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats once he clears waivers, Pompey adds.
Harrison was signed to a camp deal late last month and was a longshot to make the roster. He appeared in four preseason games.
Harrison, 28, saw action in a total of 34 regular season games a year ago — 17 for Utah and 17 more for Denver, plus nine playoff contests for the Nuggets. Although he provided his usual stellar perimeter defense, he struggled offensively, averaging 2.1 PPG on .333/.188/.818 shooting in 9.8 minutes per contest during the regular season.
What’s the point of having a near 30 year old dude play for your G League team?
Yeah, I get it. On the flip side he is a high character, high effort guy along with his offensive limitations and at times poor decision making. He is a good guy to have around to fill out your g league roster with character albeit a very slim to nil chance for him to carve out a niche on an actually NBA roster. Classy guy, and easy to root for as long as your expectations are in check.
The point? He is probably good enough to contend for a 14-15th roster spot in a very limited (garbage time) role. Here he fell into the numbers crunch. He probably brings more to the table than Charles Bassey especially early on in the season (although Bassey has a higher ceiling and likely floor in a few months time). The point of keeping him on our g league roster is the ability to call him up in the event of injury etc. even then he won’t earn much/any playing time. But the why is pretty easy to understand
