The Spurs have signed forward/center Aric Holman, according to the RealGM transactions log. Terms were not reported but it’s safe to assume Holman received a non-guaranteed camp deal.
Holman went undrafted in 2019 out of Mississippi State. He signed with the Lakers that summer and was soon waived. The Mavericks claimed him but also waived him during training camp.
He played in the G League for the Texas Legends that season before signing with a team in Germany last year. He was on the Celtics’ summer league roster. He averaged 5.0 PPG and 1.8 RPG in 8.5 MPG during a handful of contests in Las Vegas.
San Antonio also officially added guard Nate Renfro, according to the transactions feed. That pending signing was reported on Friday.
The additions bump the Spurs’ training camp roster to the 20-man limit. It’s likely both players will soon wind up with the G League’s Austin Spurs.
Anyone have any idea what the Spurs are aiming for?
Post-Kawhi they seem to be floundering in mediocrity…
Are any of Vassell, Murray, Walker or Johnson approaching stardom?
Haven’t watched them much the last few years.
As a spurs fan it’s been tough since kawhi left. Not trying to hold that against him bc nobody for sure knows everything with that whole situation. Just might have been a combination of misunderstandings on both sides. That’s what I hope anyways bc was my favorite player before all that happened, knew he was going to be huge when he got drafted. That’s besides the point tho, we could’ve gotten young players when we traded Kawhi, from the lakers, I think it was Lonzo, Brandon Ingram, essentially more or less what the Pelicans ended up getting for AD. But pop was stubborn and wanted a star back to stay competitive. And so with that we’ve been middle of the pack, meaning no high picks, kind of no mans land, not competing but not getting better. Tho I will say the spurs have had only one bad draft pick since Kawhi left, which is pretty good. All those players Vassel, Derrick, Lonnie, Keldon, Dejounte, all good young players who can contribute. But do I think any of them will be stars, no. Good, maybe one or two all star seasons, kinda like a Jeff Teague or maybe even up to the level of Kamba or DLo, that’s my hope, but that’s definitely their ceiling and I doubt they’ll reach it. This year though finally the veterans have left, and I hope that means we are bad enough to get a high pick. This draft is not strong, but maybe somebody will come out and surprise and be a good pick. And like I said spurs have always been good about drafting with a top 5 pick it could be a hit, bc the spurs haven’t had a chance to draft someone like that since Tim got drafted #1 over 20 years ago. And at the very least it’ll officially start the rebuild process, which should’ve happened as soon as Kawhi got traded. Pop has hurt us in that respect. I mean I think he deserves as long as he wants bc he is Pop and he won 5 chips for us, especially the last one, not to mention 20 winning seasons. Been blessed as a fan. But his stuborness to compete and not look to the future hurt us. And in all reality he should’ve left when the last of the big 3 retired, Manu, bc that’s really when we became officially mediocre. He has brought out the best in our young players, but that can only get us so far. So that’s kinda what I think, I kinda hope the spurs do bad with these changes so we can rebuild within the next five years, I hope Pop can get his wins record and retire. And I do hope one of those young players explodes out of their shell. Like I said, I don’t think their ceiling is star, but I could be wrong. Hard to predict the future, but I hope that’s the track we are on, hopefully on track back to the playoffs within the next five years, and not the Kings/magic of the league being mediocre for years to come.
Sorry that was long but as a spurs fan I had a lot of thoughts to your very question so I hoped I answered it. :)
Great answer!
Thanks for taking the time.
