OCTOBER 14: Dotson and Burns have been waived, Keith Smith of Spotrac tweets. Both will likely wind up with the Austin Spurs once they clear waivers.
OCTOBER 13: Free agent guard Damyean Dotson is signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Spurs, tweets JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors. The team is listing Dotson as a roster member on its website, so the deal appears to be official.
Dotson, 27, played 46 games for the Cavaliers last season, averaging 6.7 points and 2.0 assists per night. He had a non-guaranteed contract for the upcoming season, but Cleveland waived him last month. Dotson was a second-round pick by the Knicks in 2017 and spent his first three NBA seasons in New York.
Dotson will fill the roster spot vacated when San Antonio waived Luka Samanic on Monday.
Like Dotson, rookie guard Jordan Burns is listed as a member of the Spurs’ roster on the team’s official website, so it appears his reported deal is done as well. The two signings give San Antonio 19 players under contract.
Always liked Dotson. Solid 2way player. Pops should be able to appreciate him. Dotson should take advantage of this opportunity. Wish him the best.
Yeah I liked him too. He was kind of set up to fail in Cleveland because Garland and Dellavadova were out a huge portion of the season and he had to primarily play backup PG when he was in. The Spurs know what they are doing though so hopefully he can figure everything out down there.
Dotson sealed him doom with the Knicks after criticizing the owner for not issuing a statement shortly after the George Floyd death as many companies did at the time.
1) Not sure how Dotson social past with the Knicks doomed his future career and play.
2) Dotson didn’t criticize Dolan at all or at least directly. The entire team was mad at his lack of response including staff and past players.
3) Dolan might have final say, but it is the GM and executives who let Dotson go.
4) The Knicks have the most diverse front offices in the league. I doubt their GM who is Black let Dotson go because he was mad at Dolan for a lack of response to social justice.
Did not fit… kind of a solo player… effective as a spark against the flow but Cavs already have that… Cavs were looking for perimeter defense at the time last year, not so much now with all the seven footers. Presumably still the likable Knick player that does not need a system or coaching.
