The University of Michigan has agreed to a long-term contract extension with men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard, the program announced on Tuesday in a press release. Howard’s new deal will run through the 2025/26 season, locking him up for the next five years.
Howard has been identified as a potential NBA head coaching candidate in recent years, but the former Heat assistant has repeatedly shot down rumors that he’d be interested in returning to the league. If he changes his mind during the next five years, Howard could probably negotiate an exit from his deal with the Wolverines. But the fact that he agreed to that extension in the first place suggests he doesn’t plan on going anywhere.
Here are a few more odds and ends from around the basketball world:
- Duke’s Paolo Banchero, a projected top-two pick in the 2022 NBA draft, was arrested on Sunday for aiding and abetting DWI, according to Steve Wiseman of The Raleigh News & Observer. Blue Devils guard Michael Savarino, who was driving a vehicle registered to Banchero, was charged with DWI. Both players have December court dates.
- NBA games will be played in the United Arab Emirates for the first time next fall, according to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, who reports that the league will schedule two exhibition games in Abu Dhabi in October 2022. The NBA has previously played exhibitions in the Middle East in Israel, but this will be the league’s first trip to the UAE.
- A handful of ESPN writers took a closer look at some underperforming teams to assess how concerned those clubs should be about their slow starts. The Hawks, Bucks, and Celtics are among the teams that shouldn’t be too worried quite yet, but the panic meter is already high for the Pelicans.
I am concerned about underperforming healthy teams
East 9-12 seeds
Bucks
Raptors
Celtics
Hawks
They should be able to take down 76ers next week
Can 76ers make playoffs without trading Simmons?
Silly Sullivan it’s not about Simmons its always about jojo and his health. The sixers when healthy ( and they haven’t been ) are top three in the east my friend. Depth has been on display as they have navigated the very early stages . Overreacting to any teams play this early is foolish. Exception pelicans.
Celtics are a .500 team so I do not see how they are underperforming at all, I see that a lot of analysts were simply wrong before the season started.
You do realize Brown is out, right? And that Tatum has been playing far worse than usual? They are better than a .500 team. How much better I don’t know.
Love Celts new coach’s time outs but Coach playing vets mostly, only, has screwed up our two youngsters Aaron Nesmith & Payton Pritchard big time. Both played well the 2nd half of last season & Summer League, both very good 3 point shooters, & now they’ve provided less than nothing. When they do get a few minutes, neither can shoot. I have to put the blame on our first time coach. I would have tried started both, separately naturally, seeing if either could get hot from three. The pressure is too much to come off the bench. Payton is tying to be a passing point guard & passing up his strength, 3 point shots. Nesmith is trying to do too much. I would still try starting them, maybe it’s not too late.
Juwan Howard’s #4 Michigan team lost to my Seton Hall Pirates last night. Don’t sleep in the Pirates, they will make some serious noise this year.
I read and heard on radio. That Savarino, Duke guard who is coach K grandson. Blew a .8 and the limit is .8 on breathalyzer. He drove so Banchero wouldn’t get pulled over. HTF do you ticket them. First of Banchero is a passenger. Savarino is great friend to me. He took the bullet. Probably leaving a known party area. They were definitely targeted to me.
jeep is registered to paolo and both were underage?
Yeah @illowa is right. Legal limit of underage drivers is .01-.02.
Oh OK. thanks didn’t know that. Still he took the bullet. Paolo better take car of him for ever lol.
Also it’s a misdemeanor in NC to let someone drive your car and ride along if you know the driver is impaired.
That’s .08 on the breathalyzer, anyone with a .8 BAL would likely be dead.
Lmao
You know what I meant ….. lol
Myself and my roommate were also “targeted “ my freshman year, even though we were relative nobodies. It’s also known as being “suspect “. That’s OK, I threw up on the cob shoes
*cop’s shoes
Howard is a good guy for college basketball. We need good people in college hoops. Big program there. He can do really well. Doesn’t need NBA headaches. Good for him.
Underperforming teams and no mention of both the so-called “super” teams who both can’t stop getting whipped senseless by GSW? Shouldn’t they be wrecking a team that “couldnt even make the playoffs last year”????
I love being proven right on this site, you take some initial hits but eventually Steph Curry will always bail me out, because he’s the true #1 GOAT! Hahaha!!!
Pelicans definitely in trouble. They’ve missed on draft picks. Hawks and Bucks underperforming. But it’s still early. Hawks lose a good player to injury. We’ll see how they handle that. Zions weight is going to damage this team more. I’d trade him now. To Sixers
Ben, Maxey, #1 pick ….. come on
Signing a long term contract is the best thing for both parties to separate ways early, as the team will be compensated for it, with short term contracts he walks for free, contracts are not meant to shackle people but to offer opportunities, this move in no way can ever imply that either party wants a long term relationship, is just about doing the business right, some dastardly team from a city of brotherly hate could try to learn this simple rule of business, right?
