10:54am: A league source tells Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald (Twitter link) that the report of the Celtics discussing a trade for Simmons is “untrue.” This could be a matter of semantics — perhaps Boston checked in on Simmons, but isn’t actively engaged in discussions with Philadelphia.
For what it’s worth, Chris Mannix of SI.com (Twitter link) says the Celtics are “absolutely not” trading Brown for Simmons.
9:36am: The Celtics have expressed interest in Ben Simmons and have engaged in discussions with the Sixers, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic. Charania describes those talks as “fluid, with no traction as of yet.”
According to Charania, any Simmons trade between Boston and Philadelphia would have to include Celtics wing Jaylen Brown.
Presumably, that condition is coming from the Sixers, since it’s hard to imagine the C’s are eager to part with a 25-year-old who is posting career highs in PPG (25.6 PPG), RPG (6.1), FG% (.493), and several other categories, despite some early-season chemistry issues. If Philadelphia asks for Brown, I imagine the Celtics would seek other assets in addition to Simmons, assuming they’d still be interested at all.
Daryl Morey‘s asking price for Simmons has remained very high for several months, so it’s perhaps not surprising that the Sixers haven’t yet come close to completing a deal. There’s a belief that the team might have more options after December 15, when more players signed this past offseason become trade-eligible.
Charania’s latest report includes a number of other details on the standoff between Simmons and the Sixers, including the fact that the 25-year-old has provided the team with the names of his mental health professionals, but hasn’t shared any details on his treatment beyond that. Simmons has turned down the resources and professionals Philadelphia has offered, and the club has been frustrated by the lack of information he has provided about his status.
[RELATED: Sixers Resume Fining Ben Simmons]
As Charania outlines, the 76ers aren’t seeking out specific details about Simmons’ sessions, but want to know more about his treatment process and a possible return timeline. It seems that Simmons’ camp and the NBPA disagree with the franchise about how much information the three-time All-Star is obligated to provide to the team.
The Sixers have reportedly resumed fining Simmons for missing games and other team activities, but one NBPA source tells Charania that as long as Simmons has given the team basic information about the mental health professionals he’s working with, the club shouldn’t have grounds to withhold his salary. An arbitration process may ultimately be necessary to sort out the financial details of the dispute.
Salary works
Smart
Richardson
Landford
Picks to third team for Rookie contracts
Except for that small matter of Smart’s new contract which restricts him being traded until Jan 25th at the earliest…
Celtics started the conversation, which means that Brown is not in the trade package
76ers would ask for J. Brown, 100%, and i don’t see the Celtics doing that… even if they can get more assets from the 76ers (wich don’t have too many to trade besides Simmons).
I would love to see both teams pull a deal around those two, but its impossible IMO.
Nice trade for both teams. The Sixers fast start shows their need for another high volume, athletic scoring forward, who can rebound some. The celtics obviously need defense and a ball distributer if you listen to Marcus Smart.
NOOOOOOOOO
Celtics would need another bonafide scorer to do this.
What? You don’t think that Marcus Smart is a bona fide scorer? He certainly does! LOL!
The C’s have enough of their own problems they don’t need to bring in a guy like Simmons who’s already said he wants to go out west and it wouldn’t make the c’s and better when most of their points come from Brown and Tatum
If they trade Brown it should be for a guy like Beal or Lillard
Sixers have time here to find the best deal. 8-2 and the team is playing well without Ben. Boston chemistry according to reports is bad and Tatum and Brown don’t work well together
I worry on our end how well Brown and Harris would pair as well.
Stay. Away. Simmons is not going to solve any issues.
Brown is a stud. Horrible trade for the Celtics and I could care less about both teams. Sixers will never get dollar for dollar on a Simmons deal.
Can’t say “stud” anymore… offensive to some in the Alphabet community
@jump
of course you can. he’s not using it to describe a female of any sort.
“…and I could care less about both teams.”
Could probably say that about any team…
How about Smart for Simmons? At least Simmons won’t be cranking up 3 point shots at crucial times.
because he’ll be on the bench?
Tatum has been just as bad, lol.
Ohhhhh! You can’t say that out loud! Not about Tatum!! LOL! (PS – you’re right.)
The Celtics probably called to gauge interest in a smart package for Simmons. I highly doubt brown would be on the table
I get not wanting to trade Ben for brown, I think it is a poor fit for both teams…but why would Philly want a trade for smart (who I like)? No sense improving your rival at your own expense to boot. It’s a terrible trade offer and there are better terrible trade offers that could be made…you know, if the GM actually intended to get worse on purpose.
I am not advocating for that package. I was just speculating from Boston’s perspective. As a Sixers fan, I would not trade Simmons to Boston without an overpay. Smart is not an overpay.
76ers are looking at Brown and not Tatum? Well that’s progress. No more completely ridiculous trade demands. This public discussion about trading with Celtics is just getting the 76ers fans ready for an underwhelming return on the eventual trade for Mr Simmons.
Brown is still just as ridiculous.. Brown is one of the best up and coming two-way players in the NBA.
If I’m the Celtics, there’s NO WAY I’m giving up Brown for Simmons. The only way I give up Brown is if it’s for Lillard, I wouldn’t even give him up for Beal.
76ers better wake up and realize that they’re NOT going to get dollar for dollar on any Simmoms trade. Otherwise, they’re going to end up getting stuck with him, and they’re just going to continue wasting Embiid’s prime.
Honestly, they might matchup best with the Wizards for a deal. Idk if it would work salary wise, but I’m pretty sure something like
76ers get Hachimura, Dinwiddie, Harrell, and 2023 1st Round
Wizards get Simmons
Would work out close enough, and honestly, I think this might be the best value that the 76ers could even get.
It would definitely deepen the 76ers bench, and if they really want to make a title run, they’ll need that deeper bench in order to compete.
Clearly, the trade couldn’t be finished until Dinwiddie could be traded, but I think it would definitely help out guys like Curry and Korkmaz, as they would no longer have to worry about running the point, and they could simply focus on running off screens and/or getting open for more/better catch and shoot opportunities..
The Wizards would be selling the idea they’re willing to be aggressive to keep Beal, and they’d start their new competitive window with Beal and Simmons leading the charge, along with a talented supporting cast mixed with veterans and younger guys like Kuzma, Gafford, Bryant, Avdija, Kispert, KCP, and Bertans.
A trade with those two (Simmons and Brown) at the center of it makes sense from a basketball standpoint. Brown and Tatum won’t be maximized together.
But NBA FO’s no longer make trades from a basketball standpoint. Until either Brown or Tatum ask for a trade, they’re very unlikely to be traded. If the Sixers sell low on Simmons, it won’t be to the Celtics.
Seems in the Ballpark of a fair trade to me, but not sure I like the fit for either team? Not sure I would make the trade if I was either team?
Brown and Harris would be an even clunkier fit than Brown/Tatum are IMO.
I realize Ben needs to be traded, even though I am the only fan left if Philly that wants and hopes Ben will stay and play in Philly…. I just don’t want to face him and the hated Celtics. I hope we trade him anywhere (preferably the left coast) but Boston. Ben is better than the narrative and I really don’t want him in Boston.
Simmons is a fool for not doing as the 76ers asked and playing to increase his trade value. He was a defensive stud when breathing too hard on a shooter was a foul. This year, when defenders are actually allowed to defend, Simmons would have been able to really HIGHLIGHT & IMPROVE his value. As it stands now GMs only remember his bad series against Atlanta in the playoffs, his lack of professionalism in trying to manipulate the CBA and get paid for his temper tantrum & as a team troublemaker for disrupting practices. He is screaming “I am a team cancer PLEASE trade for me.” The buttercup needs to suck it up, get on the court & show owners and GMs that he can be a professional- and do what he is getting paid to do, while Philly looks to move him.
Really? I think he’s a fool if he DID try to up his trade value. Just the opposite.
Why would he want to fleece his new team of good players by having a high value? He’s wise to decrease the value so it doesn’t cost his new team as much in assets.
GMs who need this proof probably will not be interested in “bidding”. He is of most interest to GMs who think he can put his team over the top; they have seen that guy, and he is still young, so worth a risk.
But whichever Simmons is the one, Morey will probably always want more, and in his view, he has four years to deal!
Simmoms is trying to lower his trade value to the point where the Lakers will have enough assets to trade for him. He will eventually have the alien Adam Silver step in and somehow Simmons will end up a Laker -probably for Russell Westbrook- at which point I’ll either never watch an NBA game again, or I’ll watch hoping that Simmons sucks so badly that he will have to go to Australia for the rest of his life and box kangaroos for $. This is the most disgusting thing a player has ever done in any sport, while being contractually obliged to a team for a MAX deal with 4 years remaining.
Any chance Philly is willing to take Westbrook? Although not ideal, I’m sure the Lakers would sweeten the deal with THT.
Lol
lmao nice joke. no one wants westbrick
Maybe westbrook to the nets…lmao…
Stevens would be a 1 year President if he traded brown for Simmons.
If anything, trade Tatum over brown. Brown is showing he is the man of the team. My only issue with brown seems to be the injury bug, and Simmons is no stranger to that either..
There is no way stevens should entertain a brown for Simmons deal. Let Morey and his greed stew on Simmons longer.
If not the Wizards trade earlier, maybe a Raptors trade centered around Barnes, Dragic, and a few picks could work, but I just cannot and do not see the 76ers getting any big studs in a return for Simmons.
ESPECIALLY, that’ll be the case, if Simmoms continues to sit out..
Barnes is a stud, if Phily asks for him we hang up. I think our only offer is Siakam for Simmons straight up and I’m hesitant about that deal, not sure Simmons fits in Toronto and we’re definitely not giving up FV for him.
I realize Barnes is well on his way for making a name for hisself, but what I meant was the 76ers aren’t likely to get anyone that’s already proven themselves year over year as being a top player.
If they want anyone near that caliber, they’re going to have to get someone like a Barnes that has that level of talent, but just hasn’t proven it over an expanded period of time just yet.
No way BOS trading Brown or Tatum. Maybe Smart, and he would give PHI a nice boost!
76ers should trade for Vanvleet Dragic and maybe Siakam also
Lol what else is Philly including cause that’s ridiculous.
76ers can trade Green + Simmons (even Tobias) & picks …
More like Dragic and 2 protected 1sts for Simmons.
Find some middle ground for both trades, and I could see something like that being the 76ers best bet.
Either Barnes, Dragic, and a protected 1st for Simmons or Siakim and Dragic for Simmons..
Kings fan who wouldn’t trade Fox for Simmons here… Fox for Brown though… Lets talk Celtics fans? Interested?
Lol, the Sixers and Daryl definitely leaked this
The Sixers team is pretty well set less one point guard. I see them trading Simmons for one very good player or one good player and draft picks.
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
#FreeBenSimmons
Simmons is going nowhere like Wall is. Both will sit the rest of the year and get paid doing so. Well, Wall has a better chance of sitting and getting paid without playing on the court. Gosh, he needs his own recliner on the court to sit back and watch the team lose. Seems the owner of the Rockets won’t put him in his own suite to watch the game. Either way, he is grinning from ear to ear over sitting and getting paid. Just show up and you’ll get paid 40 million dollars. I wish I had a job like that. 4 hours of just watching others work and then going home.
If garpax still bulls fo, i believe they will trade lavine, coby, patt will for simmons. I love ben simmons playing style, but not that far.maybe vooch for ben.
