The Timberwolves need to carve out offensive opportunities for both Karl-Anthony Towns and ascendant second-year wing Anthony Edwards, opines Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. Towns and Edwards appear to be the current core for Minnesota going forward.
Towns has thrived as a jump shooter but has been somewhat up-and-down scoring from inside the paint this season.
“I think we’ve studied it and just not getting a lot of production out of it, and I think his finishing could be a little better,” Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch said of his post scoring. “I think we can get him to go maybe a little quicker, but by the same token, he’s not getting a lot of the benefit of the doubt down there.”
There’s more out of Minnesota:
- The Timberwolves took a big swing with a 2020 trade that sent swingman Andrew Wiggins and a lightly-protected 2021 first-round draft pick to the Warriors in exchange for D’Angelo Russell, a longtime friend of Towns. Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic revisited the deal, executed by now-former team president Gersson Rosas, in the wake of a big night for Wiggins against Minnesota, noting that Golden State pretty definitively came out the winner. As Krawczynski writes, Wiggins has been a better fit for the Warriors than he was for the Timberwolves. In part because there is less pressure on him to be the 11-1 team’s main scorer, Wiggins can focus more on his improved perimeter defense. Russell, meanwhile, provides little help on defense and has been erratic offensively for the Timberwolves. The Warriors also used the first-rounder to select small forward Jonathan Kuminga with the seventh selection in this summer’s draft.
- After a solid 107-83 victory over the Lakers on Friday night, the Timberwolves struggled to replicate their success against L.A.’s Staples Center neighbors, the Clippers, in a 129-102 loss on Saturday. Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic contends that this is who Minnesota really is: an inconsistent team with issues on both sides of the ball. Krawczynski says the Timberwolves grew complacent following one impressive showing against a Western Conference foe and let their guard down against another. “I feel like that’s really been the problem with us as a team is how do we not get tired of success,” said guard Josh Okogie. “I feel like after we have good performances, we have to be able to put that game behind us and focus on the next one and try to go 1-0 every night.”
- In case you missed it, Luke Adams took a look at the Timberwolves’ offseason, which was focused primarily on retaining some young talent and adding veteran role players around the periphery of its roster.
At the time of the trade, Wiggins had the 4th worst contract in the nba.
John Wall
Blake Griffin
Kevin Love
Wiggins
DLo for Wiggins, Kuminga and Rokas Jokubaitis
Rokas Jokubaitis is the 2020-21 EuroLeague Best Young Player winner in voting by the EuroLeague Players Association
Jokubaitis doesn’t play for Golden State, am I missing something?
What’s Russell’s contract rank?
It’s up there, just as bad as Wall’s.
Russell is DLo
Russell is not Westbrook
the whole idea with that trade was always that Wiggins could at least play D on the wing.
DLo firmly showed he was not a great fit next to Curry.
KAT needs to get more shots as he is the most efficient scorer in the team, Edwards just shoots every ball that he gets, sometimes they go in, most times they don’t!
Only way for MIN to win is get the ball in KAT’s hands every possession so he can play make or shoot!
Uh, well, they’ve been double-teaming KAT ever since the 5th game of the season. Edwards needs to shoot. A lot. IF they want to win, Edwards needs to become more efficient. Obviously.
Is it inconsistency? Or just being that good?
Russell is who he is—a slightly above avg PG making max money. Edwards is great for his age but still can’t legally drink. Towns is one of the most talented bigs on offense but probably destined to be a second option on a championship team.
The rest of the roster is ho-hum at best. Even in a diminished West this team is probably a play-in team at best.
Yes, inconsistency is only the best way to describe a team’s performance when their record is about .500. Otherwise, there are better ways to describe it. Year after year, MIN has been one of most consistent teams in league.
Consistently irrelevant
when was the last time the wolves were “about 500?” they are 101 games below .500 since KAnT came into the league.
KAnT is overrated and the league is onto him at this point. he is as tradeable as dlo.
Minnys a mess. There’s no consistency in any part of that organization. Their team has chemistry issues. And NONE of their stars shows any leadership skills.
Sux because they can’t improve by trading D-Lo… absolutely nobody wants him – including Minnesota.
Kat’s having an incredible season and no one is talking about it. 48/45/85 from your big is spectacular.
KAnT having a great season has yet to mean the team has a winning record….unless jimmy butler was on the team.
@billdo
Him having a great season shouldn’t be negated by team results. Im sure winning is more important to him than person achievements but that side, his individual numbers are impressive.
Yes, Karl is not going to win in Minnesota unless Edwards becomes Jimmy Butler. Meaning, Edwards becomes MUCH more efficient on offense.
Would you deal DLo for Simmons? If so is KAT untouchable or worth considering as a second move for a Tatum or a Beal or someone else?
Not well thought through, sorry, but they need to rebuild without tearing it down. A new approach at least. DLo has maybe not much value, KAT has plenty for the right team.
They should try to get the Time Lord and some other pieces from Boston in exchange for Karl.
Will the hoops gods every shine favorably upon the T-Wolves?!?!
This curse goes back to when Stephon Marbury demanded a trade. Why? He wanted to be the star in New Jersey. What a joke. Add in a decade + of Draft debacles, and here we are. I mean, the T-Wolves drafted Shabazz Muhammad the pick before Giannis. And we all know how they passed on Steph, TWICE. Their scouting was whack for a long, long time.
The curse on this franchise goes all the way back to the beginning. Their “luck” in the draft began with their first ever choice.
They drafted POOH !!
They have been ending up with POO via the draft ever since – either by actual choice or by trading them away
