Kemba Walker capped off his comeback week with a triple-double in today’s win over the Hawks, leading to questions about why coach Tom Thibodeau pulled him from the Knicks‘ lineup in the first place, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Eight days ago, there were questions about whether Walker would ever play for New York again, but now it appears he has reclaimed the starting point guard job.
“I take it as a blessing in disguise — God works in mysterious ways, man,’’ Walker said of his temporary benching. “He helped me stay humble, grounded and got me through a tough situation. Guys went down and I’m back — the first game (in Boston) versus my old team in the starting lineup. The rest is history. This is not how I pictured it. But I’m not complaining, either.’’
After being held out of action for more than three weeks, Walker got a chance last Saturday against the Celtics due to a combination of injuries and players in the health and safety protocols. He responded with 29 points, then followed with 21 Tuesday against the Pistons and 44 Thursday against the Wizards before today’s 10-10-12 performance.
“Since he came back, he’s come out with a consistent energy,’’ Julius Randle said. “It’s a lot of fun to play with. We’re feeding off each other. We kind of got a second shot at it.’’
There’s more from the Atlantic Division:
- With Derrick Rose likely sidelined until at least mid-February following ankle surgery, the Knicks are searching for ways to make up for the absence of their most dependable guard, observes Fred Katz of The Athletic. The ankle has been a season-long issue for Rose, who tweaked it during the team’s second preseason game, Katz adds. Although he was able to practice the next day, Rose had to miss three games in November with ankle soreness, which lingered until the decision to have surgery.
- There was little discussion at the G League showcase in Las Vegas about the Sixers working out a Ben Simmons trade any time soon, Marc Stein of Substack said on his latest podcast. He adds that trade talks have taken a back seat in the wake of roster upheavals caused by COVID-19. Appearing today on “NBA Countdown,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said there has been no progress on a deal or on Simmons returning to play for Philadelphia.
- Head coach Steve Nash said the Nets haven’t received any word that Kevin Durant will test out of protocols in time to play against the Clippers on Monday, tweets Brian Lewis of The New York Post. Although it remains possible, Lewis states that it appears unlikely Durant will play.
- Sunday’s game with the Cavaliers is still on, but the Raptors flew into Cleveland today with just four roster players and a limited number of coaches and staff members, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports. Toronto has 10 players in health and safety protocols and is hoping to have at least four hardship additions cleared by game time.
Rest helps bum knees
Lakers have only 3 all time greats playing today
Nets play without Durant
Very insightful. Anymore?
Not that it will happen but I’d love it if Ben just decided today I’m going to be the bigger man and come back.
Would be great to have a lock down SF that can help run our offence and stuff. Even if he and the coaches decide they prefer the offence going through Joel and play Ben off the bench with the offence built around him.
Maybe that would actually help force a move out. Teams will see him fit and healthy playing at a good level.
All this holding out by him and non trade is just annoying
Well the Sixers can just trade him and be done with it.
If he was the bigger man would Sixer fan not boo him? Of course they will. So that argument is over.
I’d be happy if they just traded him for peanuts nowadays
He is just a distraction right now.
Also he’s getting 30mil a season or so I think he can put up with some boos
Yes
I’d assign Simmons on G League
WHAT???? DO YOU THINK SIMMONS WOULD SERIOUSLY ACCEPT A G LEAGUE ASSIGNMENT??????
Now now, don’t yell at the bot.
Also – Knicks I think your answer at point guard is right in front of you. Kemba Walker has clearly proven himself by now. And just give Quickley another chance – I know he’s been terrible so far but he has immense potential.
Again life shows the haters. And wins AGAIN. Kemba s D is not good. But Knicks Team D is even worse. Kembas fault was trying to fit in. Instead of just going for it. Still say Randle has issues here. But they looked good today. Could it be cause he ran team and had ast. And Randle led the team in scoring.
Whatever the issue is. Thibs better get a grip on it. Team D is an issue mostly cause of Mitch and Randle. Team chemistry sucks on D. That’s coaching to me. With Rose out Kemba has to play now. But I’d still like to see McBride get mins. He’s more a true PG than Quickley. And best 2way guard we got.
The good that’s come out of all this. Is Grimes and McBride need PT. Both can help us and bring the energy. Depth is our strength this yr. So use it.
I see the Hawk Homer is in hiding AGAIN.
Speaking of homers…wonder what happened greenwood Porter and Marty McRae. Never liked Marty that much but Greenwood was almost lovable in a way. They’ve both been part of the community on here for years though.
Haven’t seen McRae in a while maybe new account
We don’t really miss Marty, do we ??
The way Marty ran down Kerr… humiliating.
If Kemba keeps this up he might be a All Star this year. He is telling with Mitch Randle and Fournier. RJ Barrett still is a bit slow and inconsistent with his shot. If I was the coach I would start Grimes over Barrett because his defense covers Kembas defensive deficiency and his shot looks like a young Alan Houston. Thibs start Grimes and have RJ come off the bench . Kemba is in his bag right now.
Kemba? All-star? Nuh-uh. He is good, but not THAT good.
There is zero chance Kemba is an all star this year.
NYK are in more trouble than anyone thought… I mean if at this point in life D-Rose is your most consistent guard… hardly the picture of a playoff or even play-in time, right?
BTW I kind of like D-Rose, but seriously… you can’t compete if he is your top guard in 2022!
#FreeBenSimmons
I’d tell Simmons to suit up for the next game and if he doesn’t then he would be fined and punished.
