The league has fined Nets All-Star forward Kevin Durant $25K for “directing obscene language” at a fan during the Brooklyn’s 113-105 victory against the Hawks, the NBA has announced (Twitter link).
With 28 seconds left in the first half Friday, Durant apparently made the remarks towards an attendant fan in the arena.
The NBA has been cracking down on players’ on-court obscenities this season. As Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic tweets, the league fined Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma $15K for flipping off a fan earlier this week. Lakers forward LeBron James was also fined $15K for making an obscene gesture on the court last month.
Lowest ticket price
Raptors at Nets $18
Warriors at Knicks $246
Spurs at Grizzlies $3
Why?
Spurs and Raptors are former champs
If I were a Nets manager, I’d increase the lowest ticket price to $180
Who is a better team, Nets or Knicks?
Former being a pretty key word there
Riddle me this riddle me that
How about we start fining fans for “directing obscene language” at players..
Um… It’s called the 1st Amendment.
Um… Tell that to Duran pencileneckgeeg.
KD is a public figure and a NBA player. Public figures do not have the same rights as common folks(idiots) and he belongs to a league that has conduct policies that do not affect you or me. Venues need to throw these idiots out of the game (and they do) that harass the players. There’s no need for any of that at a game.
But the league can’t fine fans.
So not only are you applying the First Amendment when it is completely irrelevant, you’re saying that it only applies to fans and not ‘public figures’ because they ‘do not have the same rights as common folks’. You may want to open up a US History book or take a Civics class.
That’s not what I said and it is…
It’s actually exactly what you said… @rct literally quoted the exact words of your comment.
I did not say it only applies to the fans. I said the 1st Amendment gives more protection to people who are not public figures. They are not the “same” for you and me.
The 1st certainly applies here – unless the speech causes harm. Then like stated “repercussions” are to be dealt with…
Pencilneck…Are you American? If not, I can understand your complete misunderstanding of the US Constitution. Wow.
Wow…. so college players can flip off and curse out the fans – since they’re not NBA players? smh
Um…That’s not really how the 1st Amendment works, it’s not some panacea that allows you to say whatever you want whenever you want without repercussions.
Correct. The First Amendment can prevent the government from taking action against you for expressing yourself, but it doesn’t protect you from the rules of employers or of places you patronize.
Exactly!
Players ain’t paid to be abused by fans, SMH!
How about not? Buying a ticket gives the fan certain rights and, at the absurd salaries the players make, they can deal with it. Unless the comment is racist or threatening.
Of course fans shouldn’t be fined, my comment was really just commentary that if fans didn’t make the rude comments in the first placr, then there would be no reaction from players.
Also, @pencilneckgeek & @miltpappas, I think the word “rights” isn’t good word choice. Durant had the right to act the way he did. But the rules of the organization he works for doesn’t allow it.
Let’s all just get back to discussing basketball, shall we?
