Rival teams anticipate that the Celtics will be willing to discuss Dennis Schröder in trade talks this season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Boston unexpectedly signed Schröder to a one-year, $5.9MM deal in the offseason using the taxpayer mid-level exception after the bottom fell out of the point guard’s market. He has enjoyed a strong season so far, averaging 17.5 PPG and 4.9 APG through his first 26 games (33.4 MPG) with the Celtics, which may ultimately price the club out of being able to re-sign him as a free agent in 2022.
The Celtics won’t have cap room in 2022 and would only be able to offer Schröder a 20% raise using his Non-Bird rights. As such, it might make more sense to recoup some value by getting what they can for him at the trade deadline — especially since the C’s don’t look like a legitimate contender at this point.
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the NBA, courtesy of Charania:
- The Hawks are believed to be seeking a first-round pick in any trade involving Cam Reddish, while the Magic are taking a similar stance with Terrence Ross, says Charania. Neither team should face significant pressure to lower its asking price, since both players are under contract for one more season beyond this one.
- Sources tell Charania that teams have called the Knicks to ask about former lottery pick Kevin Knox, who is in his fourth season and will be a free agent in 2022. Knox had a nice game on Sunday, with 18 points and five rebounds vs. Milwaukee, but has otherwise barely played this season, prompting teams to wonder what New York’s plan for him is.
- Spurs guard Bryn Forbes, who is on a one-year, $4.5MM deal, is expected to receive trade interest from contenders, according to Charania. Forbes played a role for Milwaukee’s championship team last season.
- Suns center Jalen Smith has drawn a little interest and is a candidate to be moved before this season’s trade deadline, per Charania.
Reddish isn’t a free agent until 2023, actually. He has an extra year on his deal left.
Thanks, mixed up his extension year and his RFA year.
Can’t see any team giving up a first for Reddish or Ross.
Ross in particular is having a bad season. He was always a 15-3-2 guy with impact off the bench but this year is struggling to put up 12-2-2. He’s currently shooting under 40% from the floor and 30% from 3.
Magic needed to trade him a year or two ago if they wanted a first round pick back for him
If the Suns aren’t going to resign Ayton, which would be stupid not to do so, they need to keep Jalen Smith. I think he is going to be a good center in the future. Not as good as Ayton, or even close, but good enough to start in the NBA.
Rumors
Suns offer Ayton and Smith for Sabonis and 2022 Pacers protected First.
I’m keeping Ayton.. Pauls contract will be gone in couple years and no reason not to keep him
Knox putting up numbers.
It’s a shame how many wasted picks Knicks have had in last 10 yrs. Even this regime. Could of had Knox in G-league for whole last yr. He’d have much more value right now. I mean really, what was the point of him sitting on bench all last yr.
Reddish perhaps, for a rebuilding team with immediate PT to offer, if the pick is heavily protected. I’d pass, but he still has his fans, although the ranks have been thinning every year since he left HS.
Ross, NO. His value will depend on how he’s playing at the TD, when he can be marketed as a short rotation add for a good team, who’s under contract for another year. A 1st is still high, because he’s fully priced for that out year, but if the team taking him is capped out for the next year and a half, they might fork one over.
Oh my . The Atlanta kid is going to be fuming. He’s a big Cam guy. Personally I think he does need PT. Another guy who should of played his first yr in G-league.
He has special insight. He knows what things look like when his head is planted firmly up the guy’s butt. I don’t. Apparently, a lot of these guys are beasts.
Beasts ….. that’s good.
Just don’t get the thinking in trading Reddish for a first unless it’s a lottery pick. I know he’s had his struggles, but he’s still a very good defensive wing who can hit a three when necessary and occasionally get hot off the bench. That is always something a playoff team can use.
Moving him for an upgrade or veteran piece I can see. But moving him for a later first just seems weird for a team looking to compete now. Granted, the Hawks window should be pretty long in theory.
I’d love to know who in the Knicks front office leaked to Shams that anyone is interested in Knox. He’s not good and barely plays. No one is interested in him.
And it’s something that Shams must’ve known from the start, yet he still reported it anyway. Disappointing.
I think the funniest part was “…but has otherwise barely played this season, prompting teams to wonder what New York’s plan for him is.” Gee, I don’t know. Maybe their plan is to not play the bad player because he’s bad?
If Knox does get traded, it’s going to be for another bust like Culver. Certainly not noteworthy regardless of whether a deal ultimately comes to fruition.
Knicks plan is to trade him to any team dumb enough to take him.
Cam Reddish has surely exceeded the expectations from his drafted position, so I can see very easily how anyone that wants him would be very glad to give a first rounder for him, but as a matter of fact ATL will be foolish to trade him or Huerter… now Hunter, between his usual underperforming & his health, he is the one wanting traded from ATL!
Cam Reddish…drafted 10th in 2019. Compared to his draft class he is 34th in WS and 46th in WS/48 so has surely failed to live up to his draft expectations.
