The Lakers have had internal conversations about the possibility of trading Russell Westbrook, league sources tell Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. Westbrook hasn’t fit in as well with LeBron James and Anthony Davis this season as the team had hoped.
However, Fischer suggests that any deal involving Westbrook is unlikely. He’s earning $44.2MM, with a $47.1MM player option for 2022/23, and there simply aren’t many players around the NBA who are available and could be used for salary-matching that sort of figure.
Fischer notes that a Cavaliers package centered around Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio would work, but such a deal probably wouldn’t appeal to Cleveland and hasn’t been discussed by the two teams. The Lakers, meanwhile, likely wouldn’t have much interest in acquiring Rockets guard John Wall, whose salary is nearly identical to Westbrook’s.
As Fischer writes, Sixers star Ben Simmons is one player whose salary could make him a candidate to be moved in a trade for Westbrook, and a Monday report indicated the Lakers have interest in Simmons. But Westbrook isn’t on Philadelphia’s wish list and conversations between the 76ers and Lakers haven’t gotten very far, says Fischer.
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the Western Conference, via Fischer:
- Despite their slow start, the Pelicans haven’t given up on the idea of vying for a spot in the play-in tournament and could be buyers at the trade deadline, according to Fischer, who says former lottery pick Jaxson Hayes is considered to be available via trade.
- The Nuggets are seeking wing upgrades and may put JaMychal Green on the trade block, sources tell Bleacher Report.
- Jusuf Nurkic and Robert Covington, who are both on expiring contracts, are viewed as perhaps the most obvious trade candidates for the Trail Blazers, but Larry Nance Jr. may also be a prime target for rival front offices, says Fischer.
- The Rockets would like to create an opening on their 15-man roster to promote two-way player Garrison Mathews, Fischer writes. Houston has a number of veteran trade candidates on its squad, including Eric Gordon, Danuel House, D.J. Augustin, and Daniel Theis.
- The Spurs have been “frequently linked” to Suns center Jalen Smith, who is on the trade block, according to Fischer. Phoenix has previously been reported to have interest in San Antonio forward Thaddeus Young.
Westbrook for Beal and Kuzma.
And some picks from Washington to LA
Wow guys LA is getting robbed in this deal
Wizards got rid of Westbrook they don’t want him back.
Salary natching
Westbrook for Sabonis, Turner and Warren
It’d be hilarious to see Carlisle coach Westbrook.
The only thing wrong with Westbrook is his contract. If he was making less you could broach the subject of having him as sixth man.
Maybe Westbrook for John Wall again? Maybe a three teamer that puts Westbrook in Philly and Simmons in Houston and Wall in LA. Never know- stranger things have happened.
Well, I’d say that as the only team getting a useful player in that deal, Houston would be all for it.
I am pretty sure Simmons is NOT on the Rockets radar. They have too many Guards and why add another? The Rockets can’t even give some minutes to a few guards that are deserving. Plus Rockets need space for Mathews. I think the Rockets are keeping Wall and paying the salary. The guy is not getting traded by the Rockets even if they asked for a second round pick (all he is about worth right now). No one wants that salary or Simmons or even Westbrook’s contract/salary. If all 3 get traded, I am off to talk to a future teller and have her give me the next winning power ball numbers. Then hell will freeze over and Harry Potter will take over America while sending Muggles to prison.
Love and Rubio are doing their part in the resurgence of the Cavs. Not to say they could not be traded but Westbrook is a team destroyer not a team builder. After his contract ends, his salary is driving off a cliff.
Rockets on rise
Simmons still sitting
Nets are not champions
Trade Brick for Wall
Charge more for hot dogs
Problem solved
Hilarious, the 2016 bump salaries strike again, they move around like a bad penny. Keep trading the same guys for each other, move the albatross contracts around the league until they expire.
I can’t wait for the Blazers to give Lillard that near $50 million/yr extension and then beg for someone to take him off their hands within a year.
Lakers trying hard to trade Westbrook and found out nobody wants him. Time to cut and run so buy him out.
Love to trade my 25 year old all-star plus another good player for a washed 33 year old. I’m smart.
Russ, THT and a first for LeVert and Turner?
Lakers then have Bron back at the point, LeVert Ariza AD and Turner. Melo keeps that sixth man bench scoring role.
Turner improves the defence and also spaces the floor. LeVert although not an amazing shooter is an upgrade from Russ in spacing.
Would give Lakers a better shot at a title and after Bron retires leave LA atleast with some kind of core with AD, LeVert and Turner.
Indy probably say no and don’t blame them but apparently they are looking to rebuild. They get back a first round pick and THT, which probably isn’t enough. Maybe swap LeVert for the always injured TJ Warren and they say yes.
They also probably don’t want Russ either, but maybe they would be willing to get him and then try flip him or just tolerate him until his deal expires then you get money to spend in FA.
When you’re trying to rebuild you don’t trade good players on decent contracts for a guy making over $40m a year for 2 more season unless there are other good assets. THT and a 1st that is still many years out is not enough to take on that contract.
I say if any team continues to help LBJ shame on them. Am I the only one who is done with teams helping LBJ? Don’t trade make any trade with the Lakers.
Yeah I did say it’s probably not enough. Depends how much they like THT but probably needs atleast 2 firsts. That’s why I suggested TJ Warren who is on an expiring deal and out injured instead of LeVert
The only reason why anyone would trade for Westbrook at this point is to tank while picking up draft assets or cheaper contracts with upside.
Sun’s Smith for SASpurs Young … works for me !!!
What team does Westbrook make better unless he is shipped with collateral draft picks? None is the correct answer.
Westbrook to Nets,Kyrie to Dallas,Simmons to Lakers,Porzingis to Indy,Sabonis and LaVert to Boston,Brown to Phily
When is 19 pts 8 assists 8 rebounds a bad thing? Why is Westbrook the scapegoat?Le Brons missed a bunch of games and AD isn’t dominating and taking gms over.Poor Westbrook!
