Maccabi Tel Aviv has targeted former NBA guard Khyri Thomas to improve its backcourt depth, Donatas Urbonas of Basketball News reports. Thomas, a 2018 second-round pick, played in Spain last month before suffering an injury. He saw action in five games with Houston last season and came off the bench in 34 games for Detroit during the previous two seasons.
We have more from around the basketball world:
- Former NBA guard Archie Goodwin has signed with Budivelnyk Kyiv in the Ukraine, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. Goodwin had been playing in France. Goodwin played four seasons in the NBA, most recently in 2016/17 for the Pelicans and Nets.
- The Trail Blazers‘ Jusuf Nurkic and Heat‘s Tyler Herro each drew $25K fines for an altercation on Wednesday, NBA Communications tweets. They were both ejected in the final minute of Miami’s victory. Herro shoved Nurkic in the back after the Portland center knocked the guard to the floor on a screen. Nurkic retaliated with a shove to the face.
- Could a blockbuster deal energize the inconsistent Hawks and Celtics? Sports Illustrated’s Michael Pina proposes a Jaylen Brown trade in which the Hawks would give up De’Andre Hunter, Kevin Huerter, Jalen Johnson and two unprotected first-round picks.
- Nearly half of the league’s head coaches have entered the health and safety protocols this season. Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer talks to Philadelphia’s Doc Rivers and Indiana’s Rick Carlisle on how they interacted with their assistants during their absences.
Portland could be an entirely new squad by the trade deadline. Which is honestly what they need.
Doubt an interim GM would risk their future breaking up the Blazers
CJ has been on the block all season. Nurkic and RoCo are expiring, Nance’s contract is very tradeable. Dame is the only big ? as far as trades go.
Turning down picks for Nurkic, RoCo, and Nance wouldn’t help the teams future either.
In whatever universe that Hawks/Celtics trade goes down I’d hope Philly would enter the discussion because that package for JB is laughable.
Yeah I’m sorry but Atlanta is not getting Brown for that package, it would have to be John Collins/hunter/hurter and 1 to 2 picks ….
Yes
Bulls and Hawks need to trade small pieces for Brown and Draymond Green
Third team offers a good young player
For wins, Draymond is better than Ben Simmons and Westbrook
Hunter, Huerter and Johnson don’t have much trade value. Hawks should not target Brown
The Smartest idea but not feasible
If you think the Draymond is on his way out of GS you’re a lunatic
Lol like one poster said, you’re a lunatic if you think Warriors are going to trade Green.
I’ve read your posts. You say all kinds of nonsense.
You don’t understand me.
This is what I mean
I am laughing at the idea that is not feasible
You’re package is also pretty laughable though. Brown is not worth Collins (about 80% as good as Brown by himself), 2 decent role players, and 2 first rounders
Jaylen Brown for… what did you say?
Brad Stevens: Hey! Look at me! I’m Rick Pitino!
If you want to trade Hunter and Huerter for Andrew Wiggins, you trade cotton for rock
So many jokes are possible after that… but nothing equal to the fumbling humor in this Eagle-Chief pregame panel arguing about who wants to win.
Brown to Atlanta is a possibility. He is from Atlanta. Huerter Hunter Jalen Johnson and two firsts seems like a starting place. Both Hawks and Celtics need change.
That Micheal Pina trade sucks.
Celtics would have gone from an all star in Brown that puts up over 20 a game with solid defence to Hunter who is very injury prone, Hueter who is just a low volume shooter, Johnson who needs developing and some picks.
Would set them back a few years in contending and possibly force Tatum into wanting out.
I think in reality Tatum wants to trade Brown for Beal. The two of them are good mates and both elite scorers. However because the Wizards are playing well Beal looks less likely to leave than in previous seasons.
Ben Simmons may be of interest because he’s young and would fit well on Tatums timeline for competing. Celtics would be pairing one of the leagues best young scorers with one of the leagues best young’s defenders in hope they work well together. Ben also adds a lot of playmaking which the Celtics have had issues with. He’s also got a very low value after everything. He would make the most sense from the front offices perspective.
You keep saying WAS are playing well & competitive… but they are a losing team this year, in the play in at best, & I repeat again, not as good as last year, as they lost their MVP of the last season, Russ, he single handedly willed them to the play in & playoffs, they just got a bunch of role players & bums for him, so the team is less good this year… so, again WAS is a below .500 team & Beal is playing below his level of the last 2 years, which means I am giving less for him!
I feel like they are only down this year from last cause of Beals own play the team as a whole looks way better. Dinwiddie and Kuzma were both good picks ups.
SI’s deal is lopsided. Brown is not worth that ATL package. If Boston gets Hunter/Huerter/Johnson, they should give 2 first rders to ATL. I’m not even sure that Brown is the best player in this deal.
He’s better than all of those guys.
That proposed Celtics/Hawks trade is … I don’t know, something a Hawks troll would propose? A Sillivan proposition, perhaps?
I’m not even that high on Jaylen Brown, but with Hunter’s health issues the trade kind of boils down to Huerter plus picks. For Boston’s second best player (by a wide margin).
And two picks, even unprotected, won’t mean as much when Trae Young is in Atlanta on a brand new extension.
To be fair, there’s just not much Atlanta has to offer for a player of Brown’s caliber. Their issue right now with the much rumored 3 for 1 upgrade deal is that their gluttony of wings have been either injured or underperforming.
In theory, this would be the scenario where Reddish has a breakout year, but that hasn’t happened either. So Hunter, Bojan, Reddish probably aren’t moving the needle for many teams (unless you’re REALLY high on Reddish, which some FOs might be). Huerter’s a nice piece, but you’ll have to pay him this summer.
And even if they included Collins (which they probably wouldn’t), does that even really move the needle that much for Boston?—the Celtics need playmaking, desperately, which is the one thing Collins won’t bring.
What an awful JB proposal lol
I guess SI doesn’t brief it’s writers on NBA trade restrictions. Huerter can’t be traded until the summer.
Otherwise, it’s a silly proposed deal. Modern NBA FO’s almost never make trades of significant players unless the (non-basketball) circumstances make it necessary. This proposal can only avoid being laughable if it were BOS that felt compelled to make a deal (because Brown demanded a trade, etc.). Here, it’s ATL that needs to make a deal, or at least explore it, before the beginning of next season.
Pina does mention Huerter’s poison pill restriction in the article, so I guess it’s meant to be an idea for the offseason.
He’s a former Hoops Rumors writer, so I would’ve been disappointed if he hadn’t acknowledged the cap-related issues with it.
I think they should trade Tatum over Brown.
