Derrick Rose is traveling with the Knicks on their three-game road trip and there’s optimism that he will be able to resume playing next month, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Rose had surgery on his right ankle on December 22 and was projected to be sidelined about eight weeks, which would have him returning right after the All-Star break.
“I hate to speculate,’’ coach Tom Thibodeau said. “I know he’s doing everything according to plan and there hasn’t been any setback. The swelling’s all gone and he’s feeling a lot better. That’s the important thing.”
Thibodeau added that Rose hasn’t been cleared to run or jump yet, but he is doing workouts in a pool. The loss of Rose, combined with knee issues for Kemba Walker, have left the Knicks short-handed at point guard, although Walker returned to the starting lineup Monday night.
There’s more from the Atlantic Division:
- After playing five minutes Sunday in his Knicks debut, Cam Reddish didn’t get off the bench at all Monday, per Ian Begley of SNY.tv. There’s no obvious candidate to be removed from the rotation to give Reddish more minutes, so Begley wonders if a trade is in the works, noting that it wouldn’t make sense for the Knicks to give up a first-round pick for Reddish if they didn’t intend to use him.
- The Raptors aren’t interested in trading core players Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca. Instead, Toronto will focus on acquiring other pieces who can complement that group going forward. One obvious move involves finding a taker for Goran Dragic‘s $19.4MM expiring contract. Dragic was acquired from the Heat in the Kyle Lowry deal, but hasn’t played since early November while tending to personal matters, which Grange said the Raptors didn’t expect.
- The Raptors have assigned Yuta Watanabe to their G League team, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports. As a fourth-year player, Watanabe would have needed to give his approval to the move. He has played in just 19 games this season.
- The Cavaliers may be the Celtics‘ best option in working out a deal for Dennis Schröder, John Hollinger of the Athletic says in a discussion with Jay King about Boston’s trade prospects. Hollinger proposes sending Schröder to Cleveland for Kevin Pangos, Ed Davis and a 2023 second-round pick in a trade that would leave both teams under the luxury tax.
Dragic has actually played some Games thus year for the raptors
That Celtics trade is so bad, it’s almost like Danny Ainge proposed it.
Why did Raptors basically give Lowry on the plate to Heat for Dragic and he’s not playing? Philadelphia,Knicks could of offered more in a trade. Looks like a one sided trade to me
Because it was a sign and trade, so presumably Lowry himself limited his possible destinations. The Raptors did get Achiuwa from it, so the trade wasn’t a wash for them.
We’ve seen enough of Achiuwa and it is a one-sided s&t. A rare Masai miss. He should be packaged away asap while others can believe there’s potential.
Warriors could be a nice fit but Masai has to move Boucher @ TD
Masaï should have trade Lowry to the Lakers for Kuzma THT/picks Caruso
Um, no. Those players ain’t it, and I’m not interested in helping the Lakers clown show. Next.
The C’s don’t need anymore junk players or useless 2nd round picks
Pangos and Davis’contracts are not garanteed so no tax …
Is Ainge still in charge? Stop with these stupid trade rumors, get someone to help
Ainge or Brad are just going under the tax cause Boston is a play-in team …
Why did everyone think Rondo was some huge answer for the Cavs?
Rondo is merely using the nba as his personal Lifetime Fitness – except he’s getting PAID to exercise, stay in shape, and play a little ball.
Smart man… do it as long as they’re willing to!
Bubble Rondo has extended his shelf life 3-4 yrs
Tbh he wasn’t even playing good, or a big part of the rotation that year with the Lakers before the bubble
He looked cooked but really 2 solid playoff series really got overated by the masses (especially ATL giving him a 2/15)
Gotta give LAL credit for not biting that apple
Raptors should trade FVV for Simons, if they are really into position less bb. Vleet and Grant are just too short even for regular guard size(with Vleet being fat too).
Banton
Barnes
OG
Siakam
Simons
I like him and he fits well into Philly, but IMO Toronto has to throw some picks or a little more of value.
If im Tortonto i will be glad to do a deal like that, Simmons is an all-star and a DPOY caliber player that could push them to fight for home court advantage next season.
I’m pretty sure he was meaning Anfernee Simmons. Otherwise what he said really wouldn’t make sense. They would not want FVV for Ben
For that …… Knicks should go after Schroder. We got 16 second rd picks thru 2028. Schroder starting and Rose backing him up. Is better than what we got now. Let’s see Dennis for this year.
Why don’t you just become a Celtics fan at this pt half the roster is in NY now lol
Half you should take arithmetic again. And Fournier was never part of that roster.
I’ll have you know I got a 93 in Arithmetic you want 2 see my report card??
Send Randle to Kings ……..
Haliburton and Bagley to Knicks. I’d rather go with Obi1 and Bagley at the 4. I’ve had it with Magic Randle …..
There is NO WAY Sacramento makes that deal, it makes 0 sense. And im not even that high on Haliburton like most people seems to be.
I can’t think of a team taking on Randle, he is good at times, but he should be at best the 3# option on a contender, if not you are doomed.
Bad trade for Sac town. Probably will never happen
So many things here to comment on.
1) Lowry was only interested in going to Miami, and Masai did him a solid to thanks him for all of his contributions to TO.
2) Fred a little fat and short? Dude is a dogged defender and likely All-Star.
3) Why would Sac Town make that deal? I’m a Knicks fan, and are kicking them for not just taking Halliburton in the first place. There is no way they’re getting him for Randle. Randle is very hard to fit into an offence, he struggles to play well when he doesn’t dominate the ball. He’s also not good defensively. The Knicks had no real need to give him an extension last summer, they should have played it back to see if he could deliver again this year before cutting him a big cheque. The truth is, this was a .500 team last year that had a hot 20 game stretch. They are still a .500 squad, and Randle is proving both on and off the court this year that he can’t be the leader of this team. Picking Toppin looks even worse now that Randle has been extended.
You can’t fault the Toppin pick Imo too hard or really the Randle extension. They would have been killed by the masses if they didn’t get Randle under contract and they had plenty of cap to spare
It’s really tough for a big market team to come up from the bottom opposed to a team like Indy whoes fans have no problem slow cooking an organic team over the years . So much more pressure to get instant results and acquire Stars that just ARE NOT available. Theres still a notion from the fan base that NY deserves a star even after a quarter century of being void of one just off 1 good year, tough situation to navigate
Sorry don’t think I answered a Q of yours just venting how tough it can be to be a GM today on a team like the NYK. I actually think Rose is on the right track he’s just been taking all his shots behind the 8 ball outta some bad luck/timing to date
So let’s say Dame is available you think Blazers will accept to trade him for Randle 4Yr … Knicks now have to play Randle 2 more years to sweeten this deal or make a 3 team deal to get a star…
@Cap’n then they should have let the “masses” crucify them for not extending Randle. They would have been vindicated with his current performance, and moving him would be way more feasible. I find it hard to believe they weren’t considering moving him after the first half of 19-20 before he shutdown. It looked eerily similar to what he’s doing now. They let a “magical” season blind em
This was supposed to be the shrewd FO who’s out there playing chess while everyone else is playing go-fish. Meanwhile:
– don’t flip Mitch + picks to Dubs to move up to grab LaMelo #2 in the ’20 draft (long shot? maybe. worth a try when the Dubs were looking for size & staring at an enormous tax bill? Yup)
– draft a pigeonholed PF in the lottery in ’20 with guards on the board;
– buy into the hype of a .500 team w/ a hot stretch run being better than a .500 team with a hot stretch run;
– extend a PF in ’21 (after drafting one in ’20)
– don’t sign Ball in ’21 to add a dynamic lead guard (yea he’s hurt, but that’s hindsight);
– sign Fournier to 3+1 at $73M
– sign Kemba for any amount above the vet min
(Reddish & trade deadline TBD)
My belief in this FO is waning.
4Q….You aint wrong my friend……… I as well thought they should have flipped Randle at peak value last year …easier said then done tho in a town like NY
But cap has to be used, and there was never a star coming to use it on, that’s why I say a team like Indy has an easier road with less spotlight and a more conservative fan base that has some patience
*I don’t think Mitch+ gets #2 pick even in a year were the draft seemed lite at the top going in
* Have a hard time judging any drafts in theory after the fact, everybody has the right play call from their couch on Monday during football season
*Hard to argue the others, but when you have cap going into a bad free agency and presumably going upwards theres always this risk ,,,, Somehow next years free agency looks even worse to so waiting/or passing on Randle wasn’t as sexy of an option at the time
You can’t just dismiss the yr Randle had last yr. He was an all star. And really showed up by example. But last yr there were NO fans. This yr there is scrutiny every gm from fans. Plus teams are adjusting to Randle. It’s on Randle and Thibs to figure this out.
Well it’s half way over now. So I’d say they haven’t figured it out. Worse they keep doing the same things that haven’t worked all year. It’s looking like the pressure of NY is starting to work here. Randle might be better off in a small market.
His contract is very reasonable. Plus we have plenty of picks. It wouldn’t be too difficult to move him. Cavs gm is a perfect example of what’s wrong this yr. Randle killed the clock at end. And RJ took a shot he had to with 3 sec left. A real PG would have run an offense. And we would of taken a good shot off the offense. There was plenty of time. But Magic Randle thinks it’s his team. And Thibs is enabling him. Knicks win as a team on D and O. Randle is not Magic he’s not Bron. Just bad offense at end.
Randle’s numbers are regressing to his rookie season. So if he’s showing us what he’s shown before – while last year was the only time he performed the way he did…why can’t last season be viewed as an outlier (by definition, something that can be overlooked)..?
Randle played that well before, or near to it, with the Pels. Also he showed steady growth, making last year look natural. With LA he was occasionally explosive, but was hindered by the Lebron drive. Also, TBH, he looks funny, like a FB player, and that has been held against him. He’s not a paint-bruiser like expected, but an open-court player.
This year is the outlier.
Randle’s 3P% for his career, starting w/ ’15-’16:
– ’15-’16: .278% – 0.1/0.4 3PM/3PA
– ’16-’17: .270% – 0.2/0.9 3PM/3PA
– ’17-’18: .222% – 0.1/0.5 3PM/3PA
– ’18-’19: .344% – 0.9/2.7 3PM/3PA (NOP; AD presence)
– ’19-’20: .277% – 1.0/3.6 3PM/3PA
– ’20-’21: .411% – 2.3/5.5 3PM/3PA
Last year dwarfed his year with the Pels. He even shot 81% from the line last year, as opposed the previous 71, 72, 71, 73, 73, & 75 this year.
There’s no denying it was a career year in terms of counting stats.
If you wanna take it further and examine his eFG%, which might not be the best stat but can still shed light on quality of shots per possession, his two best years where his last in LA (.563% – LBJ was not a Laker w/ Julius) & his year alongside AD (.555%). His career year with the Knicks was .516%, which contributed to a career eFG% of .508%. He’s plummeted to .465% so far this season, so maybe that’s what you mean by this being an outlier? Not even the lowest of his career tho. That was his 2nd season (after the injury in his rookie year) at .433% eFG
Not sure someone with a career eFG% in the low 50s is a franchise level player tho. 60% eFG is considered solid, which would account for hitting 6/10 2 pointers
You are too reliant on those 2 kinds of shooting ratios. I don’t think Randle was ever advertised as a shooter; he has an all-around game from floor to overpowering (not sure about either this year). It is like he feels set aside or something.
TOR- If your only move is “finding a taker” for the old PG making $19mil who does not even bother showing up anymore, so is lacking in stats or tapes to exhibit… then you don’t have any moves left. Typical FO vanity says Achiuwa cannot be moved yet. Toronto did a good job tanking and drafting last year, so it may be hard to not do that again!
Well, the Cavs are an option. But my first choice would be Schroeder to Phoenix for Jalen Smith, even if I had to throw in a 2nd rounder…. I believe that’d put us below the luxury tax, and we’d get a chance to evaluate him….just saying….
