3:35pm: The Celtics have officially waived Parker, the team announced (via Twitter).
1:53pm: The Celtics won’t guarantee Jabari Parker‘s full salary for the 2021/22 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that Boston plans to waive the forward today.
Parker is the only player on the Celtics’ 15-man roster whose salary isn’t fully guaranteed for ’21/22. Releasing him will open up a roster spot, creating some added flexibility for the club with the trade deadline just over a month away.
Parker, the second overall pick in the 2014 draft, finished the 2020/21 season with Boston, then re-signed with the team at the start of the ’21/22 campaign. In 22 total games with the Celtics across two seasons, the 26-year-old averaged 5.3 PPG and 2.9 RPG on .512/.385/.864 shooting in 11.4 MPG.
The Celtics’ one-year deal with Parker would have paid him $2,239,544 for the full season. Instead, he’ll be owed $1,068,288, which is also the amount that will remain on Boston’s cap unless another team claims the forward off waivers.
Assuming Parker goes unclaimed, he’ll be free to sign with any NBA team. The Celtics, meanwhile, won’t be under any pressure to fill their newly-opened roster spot right away, since they’re still carrying 14 players on standard contracts.
his cap hit should be lower. he re-signed to a 1-yr vet’s minimum contract in the offseason, which puts his full-season cap hit at $1,669,178 and his likely waived portion in the $800k range.
If he’s waived before he has made $1,669,178, the team is on the hook for the full amount.
Got it, good to know that little wrinkle. Causes pain for a team cutting a player they received a league discount on.
I remember when people were talking about Jabari and Wiggins as both generational talents, and the 2014 draft class as one of the most talented and deepest LoL
Who else was in that class? Smart? TJ Warren? Aaron Gordon and a lot of guys like Exum, Stauskas, Vonleh, Napier, etc.
I remember the buildup on that first head to head game between Kansas Wiggins vs. Duke Parker. Remember the debate on who deserves to be #1 overall. Fast forward 8 yrs and we’ve Parker bouncing around and out of the NBA (unless he catches on on a hardship signing).
It is a very deep class. You also have an MVP out of that class. You should look at the dudes from that draft. Lot of starters, some all stars, and #1 and #2 in the MVP race last year.
Jokic might be the best guy from that class and a Taco Bell Commercial played during his selection.
I mean, Parker has had two ACL tears. No telling what he could have been.
Less fat maybe. He doesn’t try hard. You can tell by watching him.
He’s lazy as hell and doesn’t play defense.
Nuggets should sign him
I still think Jabari could find a spot in this league. Even in a poor season he shooting very efficiently. He’s only 26.
Could be a good fit for the Pistons, Thunder, Blazers, Spurs and Pelicans.
How cheap can you get? Look at Jabari’s stats! But of course he couldn’t get game time here. Hope he gets a shot elsewhere. He practiced & now hits his threes!
And how about the Knicks loss? We wouldn’t pay Evan Fournier who planned to stay in Boston & he slaughtered us again with that extra motivation.
I’m not blaming Danny or Brad. Just the cheapskate owners. Sell the team! Give the Celtics a chance to win again.
Evan Fournier has not been very good outside of his games against the Celtics. They made a good move in not signing him.
That’s what the announcers say. Just checked Evan’s 3-point %. Same as always; 38%. Knicks have been trying different lineups hurting most players.
32, 32 & 41 points against us? Jeez! Would still like to have Fournier as Celtics 3rd scorer.
Same deal as with Gordon Hayward. Celts don’t want to pay a 3rd guy. Hedge fund mentality. Pay the top guy; anyone can fill in the rest. Celts need true sportsman owners.
Jabari still got game. He can definitely be a rotation guy. I guess he just needs to find a good fit. Guy can still score.
CBL
Could still be a good guy to have on a team. He can get you a bucket. Miami, Minnesota, and New Orleans should consider.
