JANUARY 6: The Bucks have officially requested waivers on Cousins, Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets.
JANUARY 5: On the night he scored 15 points, pulled down 10 boards, and chipped in three steals and a block across just 20 minutes for the Bucks, center DeMarcus Cousins, signed to a non-guaranteed deal, is set to be waived by Milwaukee, per Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
The news comes two days ahead of the deadline for all contracts to be guaranteed for the rest of the year across the NBA. Cousins’ salary for 2021/22 isn’t fully guaranteed.
Across 17 contests with the Bucks, the former four-time All-Star is averaging 9.1 PPG and 5.8 RPG this season. Charania adds that Cousins will likely merit a look from other clubs.
The 6’10” veteran joined the Bucks a month into the season. He spent the 2020/21 NBA season with the Rockets and Clippers. The 31-year-old has never been the same since suffering Achilles and ACL tears, but has proven himself to be a volume bench contributor when healthy in recent seasons.
Shooting guard Wesley Matthews, the team’s other player signed to a non-guaranteed deal, remains with the team as of this writing. With Cousins slated to be waived, the Bucks will create one open roster spot.
Milwaukee GM Jon Horst commented on the decision to move on from Cousins, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link): “We wouldn’t have been able to get through this difficult stretch of the season as successfully as we did without DeMarcus.”
In further comments reported by Woj (via Twitter), Horst hinted at a potential reunion following the trade deadline, should Cousins be available: “We made a strategic decision to have an open roster spot, but there’s nothing that would prevent us from partnering with DeMarcus again down the road.”
‘Tis a head-scratcher…
Warriors?
Would love to but Steve Kerr has turned into our old head coach Don Nelson and only plays 6-Foot-5 or Shorter guys.
It would take an Injury to Kevon Looney before they will get off their A$$ and sign a traditional Big Man.
Kerr prefers SOFT Jump shooting Centers that don’t rebound or rim protect.
That’s an awful lot of complaining about a team with the best record in the league…
I care about Playoff matchups and recently Embiid, Jokic and Gobert have destroyed Looney.
Winning in the Regular season with Small Ball is one thing, but after watching Looney struggle against AD and Valanciunas in the Play-in Tournament, I think we need one more Big Man.
Not sold on James Wiseman being the answer.
If you watch the DeMarcus Cousins play he just hangs out at the top of the key and the three-point line. He doesn’t create, he doesn’t dribble-drive much, he doesn’t do anything out there unless he occasionally shoots it. He just clogs up the area and doesn’t make it available for cutting and screening Etc.
The Warriors have a movement offense and that’s not DeMarcus Cousins game. So you would think Cousins would plant himself on the Block and get it done the dirty way but he doesn’t have the lift anymore to score over other centers, so that part of his game is gone.
Basically Cousins is a three point shooting big man who does a little bit of defensive rebounding. I will say that I do like his attitude and his effort and his desire to win. It definitely looks like he’s mentally 100% on board and that’s an asset for sure.
Good analysis, Gary.
Tonight he played out of his mind in the 1st half and then nothing in the 2nd half. Played like only 5 mins in 3rd qtr. Did someone tell him he was going to be cut at halftime.
The whole team played like garbage the second half. I think with like 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter they had scored a total of 19 second half points..after dropping 77 in the first half.
Hopefully Boogie Ends Up In Phoenix
Bismack Biyambo seems to be performing nicely for the Suns at the moment.
There’s really no role for him there. Ayton is good, and McGee has been fantastic. Jalen Smith has shown some stuff as well. Biyombo has also been solid in his lone game since being signed. I could see a team like the Lakers giving DMC a shot. Maybe replace DeAndre Jordan long term. Bulls could also be a fit.
Wtf. Especially with another wave of covid running through the roster.
Make more sense to me to dump Ojeley or Hood.
Yeah, Rodney Hood really is useless at this point.
Maybe they just didn’t want his salary guaranteed and are thinking about picking him back up.
Per the article, ‘Horst hinted at a potential reunion following the trade deadline should Cousins be available’ doesn’t give me a ton of confidence.
I thought he played well enough to keep around and absorb whatever financial or roster implications there might be. Especially, as I already said, with the current wave of covid cases (Hill, Allen, Caughnaton, Thanasis), Giannis missing last night’s game, Lopez still out, Kornet being..well, Kornet, and now losing back to back games to Detroit and Toronto.
Bulls can use him they are thin in the paint
Yeah but when’s the last time you’ve seen DeMarcus Cousins in the paint? He’s up at the three-point line chucking bombs.
A fair amount actually. He’s bo Shaq or Tim Duncan, but he gets in the paint enough, considering the Bucks (and the entire nba) just chuck 3’s all night (except when Giannis goes freight train mode and just runs people over)
Boogie going to cavs to pal with rondo, and add another bug to their roster
Np way Cavs go that direction, unless they want his playmaking. Which, this year they have been posting the bigs high a lot. But Gary says he does not even make it that far inside… can Cousins even do that?
He’s Burly and strong but only 6-10. The strength helps on the defensive boards but not so much offensively today.
Warriors makes a lot of sense considering he knows that roster, that coaching staff and how they play. Would be perfect as a small minutes centre especially considering Wiseman is out and they will be looking to go deep into the playoffs.
Nets would make sense to if he wants to link up with Irving, Harden and KD. They share the centre’s minutes among a bunch of dudes and Cousins could add to the mix. Since playing with the bucks his numbers have been way better than Blake Griffins.
Dallas could make sense. They are always signing extra centres to 10 day contracts and haven’t exactly settle on a 5 that they like. Cuban is a good owner at recruiting stars and keeping them happy.
Lastly the Lakers. Apparently they are looking at cutting Jordan and with LeBron now playing the 5 they obviously don’t mind to be playing small amd give away some point down low. Cousins can space the floor and be a good stretch big for them which is something they don’t have. He also has been on that team in the past and worked with Bron and AD
Cousins is shooting 25% from 3, the only thing he is stretching are his hamstrings before the game.
Kkkkkkkk
Lakers, i think is eyeing stanley johnson. But who knows? DMC fits perfectly with lebron’s half court set!
I’m sure it’s an attitude/chemistry issue because dude has negative energy most the time
Nah. That was a long time ago, my friend.
Exactly, dude acts like a 10X champion. I’m sure he’s a pain in the ass to coach and isn’t coachable. Think he knows it all and hasn’t won s**t.
Lakers make sense,he knows the system and AD and him are real tight.Instant offense and he looks healthy. He ran the floor and rebounded.Milw is making a mistake imo.
Plus he’s old and broken down. Perfect fit for the Lakers. (This is a joke)
The more I think about it, the more I realize I really want to see Demarcus team up with Lebron in LA. I think him and Bron would be a good fit, they’re from the same Era and can understand each other. He’s also CONSIDERABLY better than DeAndre Jordan at this point. Boogies demeanor has always been too big and too mean for these smaller type of organizations. Bring on the bright lights of LA!
this dumb af did him hella dirty
A real puzzlement from MIL!!!
DMC has been fantastic for them, played very well, you gotta give him like a B+ or A-, which are great for a guy playing for the minimum, I just hope it comes back to bite them so they learn not to get rid of DMC if you wanna win!
Botttom line is he’s down to playing 10 day contracts…. Nobody will offer him a guarantee contracts until the very end of the season…
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
I was just at the bucks game watching him dominate! Ugh.Ugh.Ugh. They better sign him after the trade deadline – or to a hardship deal
He was playing out of his mind because Raptors dared him to shoot 3’s and it was one of those outlier days. I don’t think he actually made a vertical leap all game.
he had a couple dunks, but he only goes up when he’s really motivated…
the moment in the game he had a jump ball against Van Vleet? surprisingly his feet left the ground some as he didn’t want to get embarrassed by any possibility of losing that contest.
Its an absolute miracle he was getting almost 6 rebounds per with zero vertical then.
I mean, it’s not like he’s had multiple leg/foot injuries in his life that may have caused him to be not only physically limited, but perhaps mentally hesitant to reinjure himself.
Maybe I just feel for the guy. It was less than a week ago the sideline reporter asked what the best thing was that happened to/for him in 2021, and he said “signing with the Bucks.” I do believe he was serious. Kinda curious what he thinks now.
FVV still got the initial tip.
For me… What if the Sixers had drafted Boogie #2 overall instead of ET?
They drafted Vucevic the next year so it’s not like the presence of Hawes and Brand mattered. It was attitude and Doug Collins being a chump and terrible talent developer. He didn’t want the potential headache.
If they had Boogie, and they probably would have ended up maxing him – there’s no Process. No telling if the injury happens. Collins for sure would have been fired sooner tho.
“ET” would have been able to shoot from anywhere, as long as he put those glowing fingers of his into it.
He had some pretty decent games, but I don’t think that warranted us keeping him. There is already a huge lack of rim protection with Brook being out, and Boogie definitely wasn’t doing anything to help with that. On offense he had some nice post ups, but I feel as if he settled for the 3 ball a little too often especially since he was only shooting 27%. All the back court players in protocol and with DiVincenzo being injured made it a priority to sign a backcourt player or a wing. Who knows, maybe the Bucks think Kornet can fill the rim protection and stretching the floor role better than Boogie? Only time will tell
Come back to the Clippers! He fit perfectly with the squad. Hustle heart, good on the boards. Hartensteins injury proves another big is a necessity.
Dang. I’m sure he was finally getting into game shape and being routine, chemistry, and confidence.
He should be on a team somewhere.
