Prior to sending Cam Reddish to New York, the Hawks discussed the framework of a trade with the Celtics that would’ve sent Reddish and Kevin Huerter to Boston in a deal for Marcus Smart, reports Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Huerter is one of 11 players affected this season by the poison pill provision, complicating salary-matching in any trade involving him, but the deal described by Fischer theoretically would’ve worked for both sides if Atlanta had included another minimum-salary player (likely Solomon Hill).
Smart ultimately stayed put, and Fischer says it would take “significant value” for the Celtics to move him in another deal in the next two weeks. According to Fischer, there’s a sense around the league that the Celtics will be better in the second half than they were in the first half, as long as they’re healthier and first-year head coach Ime Udoka gets more comfortable.
Here a few more trade notes and rumors from around the Eastern Conference:
- One team contacted by the Hawks told Bleacher Report that Atlanta wanted a “valuable” first-round pick and a starting-caliber player in exchange for John Collins. Other teams think the Hawks could get even more than that for Collins, says Fischer.
- According to Fischer, the Raptors and Pacers at least briefly discussed a trade involving Domantas Sabonis and Pascal Siakam, but those talks stalled. The concept makes some sense in theory, since it would allow Myles Turner to be the lone center in Indiana, and Toronto has long been in the market for a five.
- Since Brook Lopez‘s recovery timeline remains up in the air, the Bucks are “poking around” the market for a center, with Suns big man Jalen Smith mentioned as a possible target, per Fischer. Semi Ojeleye is considered to be available and Milwaukee has received inquiries about Pat Connaughton and Donte DiVincenzo, Fischer adds.
- A handful of teams have expressed some interest in Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman, including the Spurs, Hornets, Mavericks, and Bucks, writes Fischer.
The Cavs aren’t trading Cedi
Depends on the offer. He is relatively cheap. But he isn’t really that good. He’s outperforming on defense. Typically you’d sell high.
Like I said, whats the offer?
Does Ojeley have any value at all?
I’ll be upset if the Bucks trade Connaughton. But they probably will for Giannis’ other brother.
To answer your question depends on the year. In the 2020 draft the Cs gave away the 30th pick to Memphis. Danny had already drafted Nesmith and Pritchard and told everyone that he didn’t want more than two rookies on the roster. I can only conclude that in Danny’s mind, Semi Ojelye was more valuable than the 30th pick which Memphis used to select Desmond Bane. The following season, the Cs let Semi go.
Im only asking about his current value, or lack thereof. I’m thinking there isn’t any.
That would have been a garbage trade for the Hawks. Now if they could get Jaylen Brown with a Collins, Bogi, and a few picks deal that would be interesting.
Speaking of garbage trades…
Indy has a valuable 1st and starting caliber players to trade.
Even a backup plus the first would be valuable!
Celtics should have jumped on that offer.
Fans would have disliked Reddish for about the same reason they get mad at Smart. Maybe the sync would have improved… not the answer probably but fun to see on both teams for a neutral, how they get along.
That isn’t the point. I’d rather have Reddish over Smart for the simple reason that Cam isn’t locked up for an additional 4 seasons. The real comparison is Smart to Huerter. The latter has a lower AAV and more importantly, he can shoot. What do you call a wing player who can’t shoot? Backup. Journeyman. You don’t give such players multi-year extensions. Wyc needs to wake up and realize that Stevens is wrecking his team. Then again Wyc is happy so long as his team remains below the tax.
There was an obvious error in the report. Its Boston that has to attach a 1st rder on any Smart trade out. No one wants that contract with a deeply declining “talent”.
Joe you hit the nail on the head. Not only was I opposed to extending Smart, I find it immoral for a team to compound a mistake by giving up a 1st rounder just to remove a bad contract. Danny panicked when he threw max money at an aging PG. Stevens then traded a mid 1st to OKC just to rid of Walker’s deal. That’s a big double bird to the fans.
Who knows what ATL considers a “valuable” 1st, but if it’s what I would think (a pick that can currently be projected as being in the top 10 of the next draft), then I doubt they’ll get that for Collins. Those picks are rarely traded, in part because the teams holding them usually aren’t in win now mode. But they can get multiple protected and/or remote 1st’s.
Portland, Indy, and SAS all could trade that pick and be competitive next year. Portland can’t trade their pick though. So it would have to be a 3-team deal where CJ or someone nets them a 1st among the other Top-10 picks.
Indy wants to middlebuild. Lots of possibilities if they wanted to get aggressive.
Hawks seem desperate to me. They are a young team that overachieved last yr. They need closers on that team. Young is only one, but he’s still young. Their GM is not valuing their players right. Collins and Cam could of been used to get a solid young vet. And Smart makes no sense to me.
You need to look in the mirror. Its your team that made the ridiculous signings (Randle, Fournier, Noel), has no closer, and has MGT overvaluing their players. Its ok, you can still treasure that 1 playoff series win in the last 20 yrs.
Both teams have made signings they instantly regret. Hawks have drafted way better though. Hawks do need a closer.
Bradley Beal and Bertans for John Collins and Bogdan. Hawks will have to included picks. Probably put Wright in there to match the money almost exactly for the Hawks and luxury purposes.
Boston “fans” have been trashing Marcus Smart since he got here. Not me. Look what we’ve done in the last 2 games w him back.
I would hate to see our tough guy defender & “heart & soul” & the guy who makes the clutch, miracle, magic plays for the Celts leave!
Go Celtics!
That didn’t age well, did it?
True. Smart had good stats although once again Celts choked, turned it over & threw up threes in the 4th. Why we must leave it up to Stevens to find the answer. Someone needs to control the ball, not turn it over & get Celts good shots in the 4th, like Bob Cousy said.
