The Knicks were willing to give up a first-round pick for Cam Reddish, but he hasn’t seen much playing time in his first two weeks with the team, writes Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. Reddish got another DNP Friday night in Milwaukee and has appeared in just two games as coach Tom Thibodeau has followed through on his statement that Reddish will have to earn his minutes.
“We like who (Reddish) is. We like the talent. And right now — it’s a long season,” Thibodeau said. “We traded someone who wasn’t in the rotation, so you can’t keep adding to it without taking someone out. We can have injuries, so just have to be patient and work our way through it.”
Bondy states that although Thibodeau works closely with team president Leon Rose, the Reddish deal seems to be the latest instance where they have different views of a player’s value. Bondy adds that Reddish’s situation may not change for the rest of the season unless the team makes another trade by next week’s deadline.
There’s more from New York:
- An easy way to shake up the Knicks is to move rookie guard Quentin Grimes into the starting lineup, suggests Steve Popper of Newsday. Popper notes that Grimes is the team’s best three-point shooter at 40.3%, he’s better defensively than starting guards Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier, and he plays with the toughness that Thibodeau likes. “If a rookie can play you’re going to see it right away,” Thibodeau said of Grimes. “Each time he goes through the league he’s going to pick up more and get to know the players better and the teams better. The anticipation factor and experience factor get into it more. There is trial and error. The second time around he’s been really really good.”
- Knicks assistant Kenny Payne is considered the favorite to become the next head coach at Louisville, Popper adds in the same piece. Payne played for the Cardinals and spent 10 years as an assistant with Kentucky before coming to the NBA.
- The Knicks have “touched base” with the Mavericks about guard Jalen Brunson, Ian Begley of SNY.tv said on a recent podcast (hat tip to Grant Afseth of SI.com). According to Begley, there’s a team that plans to offer Brunson more than $20MM a year in free agency this summer, which might make Dallas more willing to part with him.
Knicks didn’t acquire Reddish to burn a first rounder. There’s more to come and hopefully it involves the departure of Fournier and Walker.
Keep the dream alive
This story says Reddish may be going to Detroit as part of a package for Jerami Grant -https://www.pistonsblog.com/2022/01/did-knicks-trade-for-cam-reddish-to.html
Another same old same old article about the dysfunctional Knicks. Its ok, the fanatics need to keep rearranging the deck chairs.
Fournier, Kemba, Noah, Taj & SHill for Wall & a top40 protected future 2nd is looking more & more like a good deal for both sides… Houston adds a vet shooter/ballhandler in Fournier that can step into EJ Gordon’s spot once he’s eventually traded. They could keep Kemba & Taj or more likely buy them out & get some cap relief. Overall just being able to trade Wall anywhere is a major W for Houston & receiving a guy like Evan doesn’t hurt.. for NYK they get a pretty significant upgrade at their weakest position going from Kemba to Wall. Wall/RJ/Julius could be electric together & the huge wild card in the deal would be Cam Reddish getting an increased role… Wall/Cam/RJ/Julius/Mitch with IQ/Rose/Grimes/Burks/Obi/Nerlens off pine should be more than enough to get to a play in game
Noah and Solomon Hill are not on the Knicks… and Taj is like Thib’s favorite player other than Rose. Doubt he trades him.
Taj might be one of Thibs fav players but Wall is one of Wes’ fav players. Also Taj isn’t as effective as he’s been the past few seasons & can easily be replaced on the buyout market. Noah’s contract is still on Knicks books bc they stretched him a few yrs ago.
Stretched players arent still on your books or tradable. The whole point of stretching is getting them off your books and cap hit. So no they cant trade Noah.
This takes Fantasy Basketball to a whole new level, trading guys that aren’t even on the team.
How Wall, who didnt play all season, is a significant upgrade over Kemba?
Wall has been better than Kemba for their entire career. Wall’s intro to the national stage came vs Kemba early in his freshman season at UK & he dominated their rivalry in the NBA as well. Even last season coming off a near 2yr layoff Wall was better than Kemba
LOL. Thanks, I needed a laugh. First, you can’t trade released players (Noah/Hill) whether you’re still paying them or not. Taj is year to year with the Knicks. Second, whether a FO likes a player or not will go into whether they look to trade for him. Not what they will trade for him. That’s determined by that thing called the market. Wall’s contract is valued (by its holder) as dead money. Nobody else will value it higher. So, the market value is MINUS two mid-protected 1st round picks. Fournier’s deal is likely negative as well, although that can change week to week (he’s not in a suit by order of the FO). In any case, Fournier’s negative value isn’t anywhere near the Wall level. Walker’s deal is meaningless from a cap and tax standpoint.
Alright DXC lets get this outta the way early
Lakers and Knicks both end 22 disappointed, neither are able to make anything of offseason/trades
Do ya trade Rose Kemba Noel and Burks expiring’s for Westbrook and the 23 1st ? Perhaps Fourn could be subbed for one of the Pg’s as well but the match is actually super easy between the 2 teams
Normally a 4-1 doesn’t work but this situation actually works easily here with all the room on La’s 23 roster
I know ya don’t like 2k ish trades but I think trading Randle to Minny for (Malik and Prince expiring + 1st) and Fourn to La in a Westy trade (obtaining a 1st)could clear 24 ledger while also providing 2 extra firsts. It’s a lot of movement and probably dooms 23 but….
*Lakers 27 first not 23
Can I have 10 days to decide? Assuming nothing changes (positive for the team), I’d be OK with a reset trade for RW that nets a remote 1st and gets us off the last year of Fournier’s contract (2023-24). Even if it adds salary next year (2022-23), and subtracts of the win-now vets we resigned (Noel/Burks/etc.). RW’s contract doesn’t frighten me because we have no real cap space next year either way, and, who knows, maybe he can be a good example for the young McBride or IQ. Hate to lose Noel, Burks or Rose, but realistically they weren’t signed (nor did they sign) to wait out even a mini-reset.
Looking like a disaster. Stop day dreaming. Knicks are rebuilding. Why would they want any part of Wall. Seems Knicks will make a move by TD. Not a fan of Brunson either.
Brunson is worth 4 year $64 million
A team wants to pay him $20 million per year
Fournier for Brunson?
So the Mavs trade Brunson for a bad contract for what?
Yeah they will just pay Brunson if they want to spend Fournier money since he isnt expiring so it would be equal cap hits for a better player…
Mavs have to make a decision on both Brunson and Finney-Smith this upcoming offseason, so it is quite possible they’ll deal one or possibly both at the deadline.
Brunson would be an excellent pickup for the Knicks.
Brunson/RJB/Reddish/Randle/Robinson
Rose(Kemba)/Grimes/Fournier/Toppin/Noel(Gibson)
Trade IQ, Burks, and a second for Brunson
I think that 10 deep rotation would be more than enough to get the Knicks into the playoffs where they’ll likely be 1 and done, but they’ll definitely put up a good fight. Getting past the 1st Round will all come down to their seeding, but I like that group alot better than their current rotation..
Cam was sidelined when traded. He was resting a bad ankle. And why would a new player get mins without knowing offense anyway. Writer is tripping.
All players earn mins with Thibs. But Cam was a Rose move. He sees upside and so do I. Knicks are not moving Fournier now. He’ll get the year to prove himself. His D is bad at times. But that’s more a team D thing. Knicks team is lacking this yr. It’s why the second team plays better most times. They bring energy and hustle both ways.
To me there is a chemistry thing going on with players. And Randle seems like the one in the middle of it. Thibs is riding him out. But it’s not getting better. He is not the leader he was last yr. He’s leading them in wrong direction. It’s time to start Obi1.
I can see Knicks moving Burkes, he has value. I know Knicks liked Turner. But his injury probably makes them wait till next yr. For me I play the young guys and make a major trade next yr. I wouldn’t even mind being in lottery. Cause there will be bigs in the draft. Sims has proven he can backup. So moving Mitch and Noel is also a possibility. Especially if they go after Turner. I know a trade is coming. Just pray it’s not a panic move. Thibs needs to get a grip. It’s only his second yr.
Right, and one of the main reason the second unit seems to be more efficient and effective offensively is because of Randle.
With the first unit, the ball stops and spends way too much time in Randle’s hands dribbling and trying to score and/or make plays. It isn’t working, he’s turning the ball over too much, and he’s taking his teammates put of their rhythm and flow by stopping the ball to iso for 10-12seconds (it seems like at least).
You are right about Randle. But then you have to ask yourself why ?
He’s playing more like he did two yrs ago. And that’s why Knicks took Obi and not Haliburton. Last yr there were no fans. To me it seems the scrutiny is getting to him. So he is trying to prove everyone wrong. But he’s become a more selfish player. His problems shouldn’t be teams problems. Thibs has been riding him out. Cause he is loyal to a fault. Plus even if we wanted to move him. He has to be more consistent to get decent value for him. Knicks are not winning anything this yr. So it’s in our interest to play and bring up value of Randle, Kemba, Fournier. You don’t just trash them away. You work thru it.
Knicks D is more a team issue. If Mitch was right and Noel not hurt. We’d be better. If Rose didn’t get hurt we’d be better. Those two things all fixable. Would of easily given us 5 more wins. Then this is a whole different conversation. This is a 82 gm endeavor. Not a half season. Randle is a big issue. Cause he is regressing and he was our best player last yr. He didn’t lose his gm. He’s lost his mind. It’s all in his head. It’s up to him if he wants to stay. But this yrs Randle will not last much longer. The fans and press will run him out soon enough lol. You don’t want that. You’d rather trade him on your terms.
We’ll see what happens at TD. This is still a rebuild. It’s that simple. That’s the priority here. Knicks have not built thru draft since Ewing. And they didn’t do that one well. Since they gave away Jackson (HOFer) and Strickland. Two of best PGs of their era. Then gave away Camby . Rebuild is the Priority with Knicks. 22yr old RJ is the future.
I tend to agree, especially with the fact about Thibs’ loyalty. He’ll always go down defending his own guys, and he loves him some grinders.
I think that’s honestly one of Thibs best attributes, but it can also be a detriment to his team and can effect his team’s ability to win games.
I think it’s a shame that Thibs won’t play Toppin more, and I just cannot help but wonder what he has or hasnt done to be in Thib’s doghouse.
Fournier’ D isn’t bad at times…it’s always bad. He’d get schooled on W4th in a pick-up game. And with all the bad passes and dribbling fumbles he’s made on the offensive side of the court, he needs to come off the bench. He’s a 3pt shooter, nothing more.
Just answer this. Do you ever watch the Knicks. And how many gms this yr. Show me how smart you are. K
Every single game. As for stooping to your level, that I won’t do.
If this is true. Then you must not know what you are watching. Or don’t understand the game. If a guy doesn’t or can’t do something. First thing you ask is why.
If you know this game and team. First their team D has been bad all season compared to last yr. The chemistry is a real issue on O and D. At this point and you do have to give players time. To make an honest assessment.
Mitch the anchor of the D has been out of shape. If you do watch . His lateral movement is still bad this yr. That’s usually ankle issues. Which he has had ALL yr. Throw in Noel being in and out of lineup. Then there is no consistency in your most important defensive position.
This makes a guy like Fournier who is new. Look even worse. Then the fact there is no offensive flow so he’s become a standup threes shooter. Then he’s expected to run and play D. Fact is his D is not his strength one on one. But worse I see him give up on plays. I see no switching soon enough to help a guy you know needs help. See this called Team D. When you know your teammates and cover for them. The only truth is both Kemba and Fournier playing. Does hurt our D. But it’s worse cause there is no anchor to back them up. You understand how many gms were winnable. We give up more pts this yr than last yr. That’s not on Fournier. We have lost 11 gms by 7 pts or less. If our team D is better we win a few. As bad as we look now. Injuries and team D. We easily could of won 5 more gms. Then you are all about something else than Fournier.
Blame is for people not invested. In team sports you find the reasons and fix them. Fournier shooting is what this team needs. His D can be helped by coaching and his mates. He’s more than a three shooter. But is seems that’s what he’s become. That’s disfunction as a team. W and L as bad as Kemba and Fournier might be. Are not their doing. Our team D is worse reason #1. Our offensive chemistry is still not working reason #2. All this falls on Thibs. Fournier can still be a weapon off the bench. Cause he is best shooter we got. When we learn he is not just a shooter. But a shooter scorer. We will be maximizing his gm. And he’s playing well offensively in a flow. His D will also get better. Cause that’s how it usually works. He may never be all D team. But his D and especially team D can and will be better. Our biggest issues now are Randle and PG. So looking to blame a player is just te easy way out. Especially one who’s played 48 gms.
Fournier is alot more than just a catch and shoot 3pt guy. Don’t sell the man short, he may be having an off year, but he still can be a valuable piece on a contender.
I just think Fournier should be in the 2nd unit. There’s more ball movement, and more movement on the court in general. Let Fournier be a scorer and attacker on that second unit, and I wouldn’t imagine him continuing to struggle.
That’s exactly the issue. We’ve made him into a 3PT shooter. I agree he’s much more than that. That’s our offense. Cause there is no flow. And Randle is biggest culprit. Thibs has to get a grip on this. Something is going to happen at TD.
Knicks have 5, maybe 7, wins left on the season. The should trade Walker, Fournier, Gibson, and just about anything else they can for picks and/or expiring deals. NY get ready for another disappointing season (and probably missing the Playoffs).
Knicks schedule is becoming tuffer than tuff
Knicks are definitely not even making the play in.
February the schedule is tough. We will find out a lot about this team. And also about TD. Then March the schedule gets even tougher. It’s make or break now. Still gotta play the games. NYK
Toppin never gets enuff minutes at the 4 because Thibs is not benching Julius enuff … The sooner Julius is out the quicker you rebuild.
The shakeup needs to be a new coach.
You can’t replace all of the players and the simple fact is Thibs refuses to make any moves. He’s also obviously fully committed to a power struggle with the front office.
It all needs to stop before fans just stop tuning in. I never turned games off before but I can’t watch the same starters do the same thing every night while I wait to go down 20 points so we can watch the bench.
I’ve never felt so insulted.
I’ll agree that Thibs tends to hit his ceiling early on. He’s great at organizing and squeezing out more than one would expect at the beginning, but from there on out it begins to wane as he burns out his starters.
Like playing Cam Reddish over Kemba …
Why teams keep hiring Thibs is like a real life illustration of Einstein’s law: Keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results. PLAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS, TOM. All of them It’s really not that hard and the season is long.
TD is coming. Thibs may want to ride this out. But Rose is in charge here. So there will be changes by TD. Just hope it’s not a panic move. I’m all about the rebuild.
I know Thibs doesn’t play rookies. But in a rebuild situation. You real almost have to.
For @ptknicksblog: Here’s a thread on Westchester Knicks (@wcknicks) Miles McBride (@deucemcb11). McBride is averaging 29.2 PPG, 8.2 APG, 6.4 RPG, & 2.4 SPG on 50.9 FG% and 44.4 3PT% in 5 games this season.

This kid is a real PG. As his play in G-league shows. Even if took time for him to adjust. We’d still be better off in long term. He’s a 2way player who will be a solid PG in this league. I wanted him more than Grimes. He deserves a shot.
Another Thibs’ myth (he doesn’t play rookies). IQ (drafted 23rd) was 10th in minutes played in his draft class. Grimes (drafted 25th) is trending into the top 20. The guys seeing more minutes were either drafted much higher or with bottom 5 teams. He plays rookies that defend. Most don’t.
McBride, I believe, will prove to be one of the steals of the draft. But understand that, like Grimes and IQ, he’s here because of Thibs, who is all over his development. The FO was prepared not to draft a PG in 2021, which is why they didn’t do so until 3 trade downs. McBride will get NBA minutes when he’s earned them, and thus ready to excel. It’s wrong to suggest he’s not being given a chance because he hasn’t yet earned the job. Patience.
Knicks fans that think teams will trade for Fournier (unless we take on an ever worse contract then his) or a broken down Kemba b4 the deadline need a reality check. Burks maybe, but doubtful. He’s been awful lately and nobody will want to pay him the $10 mil hes owed next season
Wouldn’t say “think” but more so ‘hopeful.’ And it’s not like the Knicks wouldn’t add picks and players to accompany any of those mentioned.
