Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey has expanded his trade options due to the MVP-caliber play of Joel Embiid, but he remains cautious about making a blockbuster deal prior to next month’s deadline, he said in an radio interview on 97.5 The Fanatic (hat tip to Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com).
Morey acknowledges that the play of Embiid and his teammates makes him more motivated to upgrade the team for a championship push.
“I think with how great Joel is, our line has moved down a little bit. Because Joel has lifted us to contention by his sheer will of greatness this year, that does the number of deals we would do more likely,” Morey said. “It’s more likely that we can find ones that get us into the top few contention because of how great Joel is playing. So we are sitting right now at a better chance of a trade that actually helps Joel and the Sixers.
“[Before], we absolutely need to get an impact player, but there’s an impact player that has to be in the top 30 of the league. Because Joel is playing amazing and has lifted us into probably five percent plus title odds just on his play, now we might be able to do it with a top-40 player who’s a great fit.”
Of course, the main path to making such a deal would be to move Ben Simmons. Throughout the season, Morey has put an exorbitant price tag on Simmons. Morey’s comment suggests he’s more open to getting a package that won’t include a “top-30” player.
As Neubeck speculates, Morey may be trying to motivate a potential trade partner such as the Kings to include a promising player like Tyrese Haliburton, who could eventually develop into an All-Star.
Morey admits that he’s “frustrated” by not having a “whole team” due to Simmons remaining inactive.
“We do have a big chunk of our pretty constrained salary that we can pay the players not playing,” he said. “That’s very frustrating…and then there’s teams that are frustrated because they’re losing or not quite as good as they thought they would be, and that’s creating a lot of chatter.”
Yet he’s not necessarily optimistic that the chatter will lead to an impactful trade.
“It won’t be because we don’t want to do it, it will be because for whatever reason, I mean I can tell you that these other 29 teams, none of them wake up and say, ‘Hey, today, how can I help the 76ers get better?'” he said. “They’re all worried about their own teams. The main reason I say less likely than likely is it takes two or three to tango. Trades are not easy to construct in this league, there’s a lot of risk aversion, there’s a lot of decision-makers that have to be hurdled.”
Morey also doesn’t want to make a deal for some well-known players that will only marginally help their chances of reaching the Finals.
‘That will hurt Joel, that will hurt the 76ers, that will hurt our whole roster in the long run more than if we’re patient,” Morey added.
Thus far, there’s hasn’t been an offer that comes within the range of what Morey is willing to do, according to the radio station’s Twitter feed (link). Morey did say there are trade packages with the Kings that could work, but doubts he’ll get such an offer, which may require a third team.
I mean, Philly isn’t going to win anything this year no matter what they do. Embiid needs way more help.
Says you. Which doesn’t mean anything.
No kidding, genius.
.
But either way, Philly isn’t going to win anything this year.
Derp.
Guarantee this guy hasn’t watched a single Sixers game this season
Morey is still delusional. Nobody is or has been willing to meet the outrageous price he set. He doesn’t have any leverage at all and every team knows it. The longer he waits to trade Simmons the more the return for Simmons will drop
I feel like writers and fans see Ben as (x) amount of value and think they should get that but the situation leads Simmons value to be cut substantially, Morey is scared because he got burned by the Westbrook deal in Houston but you cannot just let a max contract amount of cap space provide nothing for you and really believe you have a chance, Morey says he doesn’t want to trade and only make Philly marginally better, but if Ben provides you zero value on the court then any trade makes them substantially better, dude is absolutely trippin, every week that goes by shortens Simmons time on his next team and that is what is the most valuable thing to Philly about Ben Simmons, if you in the east your just gonna let Philly suffer, don’t even have to guard Simmons to take him out of the game
Refresh my memory: does Simmons have a no trade clause or is it just his contract/head issues that have been preventing a trade up to this point?
Teams don’t want to trade an all star talent for a headcase
True, but there have been reports of teams having interest. To what degree, is anyone’s guess. And of course finding the right trade capital (going both ways) isn’t easy, particularly with large salaries involved.
I get the feeling Morey simply doesn’t want to trade him for whatever reason (perhaps the rumor that he’s waiting until the off-season to try for a Harden swap..?), as much as there isn’t anyone out there willing to work something out.
No, he doesn’t have a no-trade clause. Most of the guys who can veto trades this season aren’t exactly big names: link to hoopsrumors.com
Look. Let’s just 2k this beast…
Philly get: Haliburton, Buddy, Barnes, John Collins, and RoCo
Kings get: Harris, Simmons, Shake, Joe
Blazers get: Korkmaz, (2) 2nds from Philly
Hawks get: Kings 1st, Sixers 1st, MB3, Daniel Green, Thybulle
Embiid – Drummond
John Collins – Barnes
Barnes – RoCo
Curry – Buddy
Maxey – Haliburton

Barnes only once, have to have Niang on the bench …
Yea I left out BBall Paul, Niang, Springer, Chawlie, Bassey, Powell. I just went 2 deep, who would get the most run.
With a little more draft comp. Going to the last two teams. Who say no?
Blazers will want more for Roco assuming they’re not in a complete firesale. Even then I feel like another team would offer more then 2 seconds and a worse bench player. 2k would reject trade too
Moreyon’s analytics suck .Another wasted yr. He knows how to do that well.
Morey said: I can tell you that for sure, there are deals with the Sacramento Kings that I think would work. Will those deals ever happen? I have no idea. Are there just trade deals with the Kings? Probably not. Is it multiple teams? Probably …
Haliburton and Bagley plus two #1 picks. Haliburton alone gets Sixers in East Finals. He’s a future all star PG. He’s perfect for Embiid. Wake up Moreyon
Halliburton looks to be the clutch asset to trade Bagley Barnes Hield for Simmons + Harris and pick(s) and/or maybe some other young (Matisse) …and a 3rd team to take Harris contract
If a deal gets done, it will look like the one you posted. If not they have to find a home for Fox. I wonder if Minnesota would trade Deangelo Russell for Fox. SAC would move on from Fox’s contract and D-Russ would be a nice fit with Simmons
Hmmm….you wouldn’t happen to be a Knicks fan, that would like (and benefit from) to see the 76ers become worse?
Barkley should be mocking Morey again. That Sacramento deal is a good one
I still dont understand how Rivers, Embid, Morey all threw Simmons under the bus last postseason publicly…. They all did it to feel better about themselves…. Epic failure. They all got what they deserved.
Agree but to be fair it was very “in the moment” after a bad loss. Doc doesn’t really have an excuse but I will give Embiid benefit of the doubt.
Fair enough, but it’s also a reflection of how Embid really feels about Simmons. Their partnership wasnt going to work out.
Agree. This is all about trust. It was irredeemably lost.
Ben Simmons wasn’t working on his game or shot and looked like a guy who doesn’t want to be there
cant throw a guy under the bus who was already behind it
Doc has to redirect the flack. Remember if you lost 6 series when your team was up 3-1 or 3-2, heaven forbid you to blame the coach.
Morey wants Haliburton for Simmons, problem is SAC wants to move on from Fox regardless of what they say to the press. Morey doesn’t want Fox and SAC doesn’t want a Simmons-Fox backcourt. The other problem is there isn’t a lot of other landing spots for Fox
I’m no fan of Simmons ( hasn’t worked on his shooting in years and bailed on the team) but Morey couldn’t have handled this any worse . I hope he’s fired and doesn’t get another NBA job .
Morey should be fired. Letting an asset rot on your bench bc a) you want to make a statement and b) you want a sign and trade piece IF Harden or another All Star becomes available is foolish.
Look I get it, Simmons is there one real chance at at a ring after 10 years of effing up the franchise. Burnergate, giving the Celtics Tatum, letting Hinkie draft, Letting Jimmy Butler walk, tanking so badly the NBA has to stick you with Coleangelo, but chances to win rings are rare, especially for the Sixers.
You get the most you can get and work it out later.
If Embiid breaks his foot before next season, then what? YAH you got James Harden!!!!
Sixers are good enough to get to the ECFs with some help, maybe if Embiid takes it to another level you might even get lucky and get your shot at the finals. IF they let Simmons stay on the roster, you chances go down considerably.
Morey and the Sixers should of move him in the summer. Arrogance is what kills the Sixers.
A top 30 player literally means the best player from another team. Simmons will not net you that type of player. Maybe land one via free agency but they would have to dump Simmons first.
Not literally. Some teams have 2 or 3 top 30 players. Like Brooklyn or the Lakers.
Ben Simmons for LeBron. Straight-up!
Numerous NBA teams don’t have a top 30 player.
this team’s production this year, especially recently, shows this team can get to the playoffs with Ben providing absolutely nothing. What they do from there will be a matter of what they can get back for Ben, but we all know “trading him for wherever is offered”, whether it had been done months ago or gets done at the trade deadline wolnt be enough for this team. you can only trade an asset once.
Morey is 1) keeping the focus on Embiid 2) taking focus away from Simmons 3) deferring blame to nameless others… pretty standard. What else can he say? Maybe he should throw Doc Rivers under the bus :)
Spin Morey, spin!!!
#FreeBenSimmons
#GetAJobDon
Kings get N Alexander Walker & Ben Simmons
Pelicans get D’Aaron Fox & Mo Harkless
Sixers get Tu Haliburton & Brandon Ingram
So Morey is out on a pack of dudes.
He only will deal for Beal, Harden, Dame, or someone just below that level like Brown, D Mitchell.
Dame and Harden wont happen this year. Mitchell is very unlikely to be dealt. I don’t see them dealing with Boston, but who knows. So this season its probably Beal, no one, or some unknown superstar that wasnt available publicly or even in any rumors.
If you move for Beal. You think they are keeping Harris? The only reason the move Harris previously is to make cap space for the Dame or Harden figure, Beal = Ben.
Sixers need to drop like 5M to get under the tax line still. Korkmaz and Shake gotta go at the very least to someone for nothing.
Morey hasn’t blow anything yet because the team is in the playoffs. If he doesn’t trade Simmons before the deadline then he’s blown this season.
You are silly! The 76ers were 2-8 when Joel was out with Covid, otherwise they would be in 1st in the East. They have been decimated by injuries, aside from the 10 Joel missed. Last night, they lost by 1 to LAC, which was awful. However, they were without Seth Curry, Shake Milton,Danny Green,
