The Hawks traded Cam Reddish, Solomon Hill and 2025 second-round pick to the Knicks in exchange for Kevin Knox and a protected first-round pick on Thursday. According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, the Hawks were interested in acquiring Quentin Grimes, but the Knicks were reluctant to part with the rookie, who was the 25th overall pick of the 2021 draft.
The Knicks are likely to explore other trades ahead of the deadline and are known to be interested in Myles Turner and Jalen Brunson, Begley reports. He mentions that any player on New York’s roster could be on the table for the right return, pointing to Alec Burks and Mitchell Robinson as players who could draw interest, but the Knicks would likely want a top-end starter in return for Burks and/or Robinson.
Teams pursuing Reddish believed he could command a salary in the range of $18-20MM per year on his next contract, whether it be this summer in an extension or as a restricted free agent in the summer of 2023, so Begley thinks the Knicks must be open to that figure, unless they plan to trade him again in the future.
Here’s more on the trade between Atlanta and New York:
- Atlanta had been seeking a first-round pick for Reddish for several months and never wavered in its asking price, write Fred Katz and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. The Pacers, Cavaliers, Pistons, and Lakers were among the teams interested in Reddish, with L.A. recently offering two second-round picks for the third-year wing.
- Reddish requested a trade from Atlanta months ago, which led to awkwardness in the team’s locker room, and it was inevitable he would be dealt once a team met Atlanta’s asking price, according to Katz and Kirschner. Reddish was reportedly unhappy with his role as a spot-up shooter and desired more play-making opportunities, which is questionable given he has more turnovers than assists in his career. It’s unclear how he’ll fit in with the Knicks, who have a crowded rotation when healthy, meaning finding more minutes than Reddish was getting in Atlanta (23.4 MPG) could be a challenge. Katz and Kirschner believe the first-round pick Atlanta acquired could be used in a subsequent trade, perhaps for Ben Simmons or Jerami Grant.
- Zach Harper of The Athletic and Kevin Pelton of ESPN (Insider link) provide their grades for the trade. They both liked it more for the Knicks than the Hawks.
- John Hollinger of The Athletic thinks that the trade is in the eye of the beholder, because while Reddish has the size and talent to be a good NBA player, the idea of him has been better than his actual play to this point in his career. The winner of the deal will ultimately depend on how Reddish develops, Hollinger notes. He adds that Hawks were -10.0 points per 100 possessions with Reddish on the court, compared to +5.7 per 100 when he was off.
- ESPN’s Bobby Marks (video link) provides his thoughts on the deal, essentially saying it’s a low-risk, potentially high-reward for the Knicks, but the Hawks got fair value for Reddish too.
- Sources tell Marc Berman of The New York Post (Twitter link) that Reddish and RJ Barrett didn’t get along well at Duke, and some in the Knicks’ front office wanted to trade back to draft Reddish in 2019.
Knicks want a top end starter for burks and/or robinson…neither of whom are top end starters for the Knicks, yet another team will give the Knicks someone better than either of them? Sometimes nba writers abandon logic I swear…they don’t want to part with either for cheap ok makes sense, will trade a worse player for a better player does not make sense
Idk they did turn Knox and a heavily protected 1st intro Reddish. As my man Marc Zumoff says Turning Garbage into Gold!
Potential gold. If they can’t mine that potential, they’ve got pyrite.
The turd is shinier than Knox tho
the idea of him (Reddish) has been better than his actual play to this point in his career.
This sums up Cam perfectly and also why it’s not that big of a trade and neither team really is that better off. Maybe Atl cause they got something for him before he left….but a late first isn’t going to do much likely.
This pick may be used in a Hawks block buster trade like KK on an expiring contract can be a salary filler in a potential Simmons deal.
That’s what stood out to me, too. Too delusional to print, unless you’re in sports journalism.
Quite frankly, “sports journalists” seem a bit desperate lately.
Yeah, I’m not enamored with Cam Reddish, either. Seems like the hype is always more than the actual product with Cam. Regardless, the Knicks didn’t give up much to get him, but if they pay him anything near $18-$20 million, that would be a gigantic mistake.
4/50 should get it done
No it won’t. Someone else would offer him more in hopes that he’s a late bloomer much like Jaylen Brown and the Knicks would have to match .
They absolutely don’t “have” to match. The fact is the Knicks gave up the bare minimum to acquire Cam. If the offer is too rich, or beyond what New York feels is a reasomable number for Cam, they absolutely have the luxury and flexibility to cut bait. They simply don’t have much invested into him, as far as the cost of acquisition goes.
4/50 is fair, but I heard Cam is asking for 4/80. We shall see. But I would be happy to have a Cam Reddish on my squad for around $12M a year as you propose. I think that’s a fair number, and similar to other top 10 picks 2nd contract extensions.
I mean they did give Fournier 20m per season , so it’s not like they’re not known for making “mistakes”.
Just a reminder that the Knicks drafted Knox over Michael Porter Jr. and it was such a horrible move, even at the time, that a Knicks fan auctioned off his fandom on EBay the next day.
It’s really been a wash thus far, with Porters back injuries. The thing is though, the Knicks haven’t developed anybody decent since like 1991. You have to wonder how many of those 1st round “busts” would have been much more had they been afforded the luxury of being drafted into a more stable environment and an organization with a better track record as far as player developement goes. Frank Ntilikina has been playing awfully well, the last time I checked. I’m curious to see if Kevin Knox can become anything NBA caliber or more.
A wash? Even with Porter’s injuries, he’s been miles ahead of Knox. Knox has done jack in this league. He’s terrible.
Knicks drafted Knox at #8 ahead of Mickal Bridges (#10) and SGA (#11).
Given that Bridges just signed for 4/90, there’s no way Reddish gets 4/80.
Knicks need Simmons next.Knicks have picks, youth, cap space.RJ,Cam,&Simmons fling down the court on the break with JR trailing.Don’t need to shoot on knickerbockerAl’s squad.Play D and pretend your Magic Johnson& beat people down
Both Padam an OreinGreeme both doubted me in the other Reddish comment section when I said that he will likely ask for 20mil come FA.
Kevin Hueter got 65/4 and I knew Reddish would want more. Even if you don’t think he is a better player, or don’t think he has more potential, he has that “I want to be a star” mentality and I deserve more. Having come from duke, been a 5 star recruit and all that I someone will be willing to pay that aswell.
Just wanted to throw that out there.
I think New York is more than likely looking at another trade, maybe Zion Williamson, maybe Jermai Grant who knows.
But end of the day I’d they don’t get that deal, I think they would also pay that and try keep him. Then use Barrett and Randle as “stars” to try convince others to come to New York.
Just glad to see the Knicks trying to be competitive and try to build rather than just suck for years. Last year and the playoffs was great for them.
I agree on all your points.
I maybe agree to some degree, but i don’t see any viable trade for Zion, even hurt-fat Zion
Yeah can’t see it either, maybe Randle, Robinson, Quickly and a first but beside that can’t see it. But Knicks are allowed to dream
ATL always seemed to have preferred the lesser player in Hunter than Cam, so I am happy that he asked out so he can fully develop his talent & show how good he is!
Tip: if you see Marc Berman writing something, look the other way
Given the Knicks season to date rolling the dice on Reddish is a solid move. Maybe Thibs can actually get him to defend.
If so, a lineup of Burks-Cam-RJ-JR-Noel should at least be defensively top notch if offensively unspectacular.
