The Bulls figure to explore potential roster upgrades at the trade deadline, but they’re resistant to the idea of moving Patrick Williams, Michael Scotto said on the latest episode of the HoopsHype Podcast.
If the Bulls want to make a major move at the deadline, it may have to involve Williams, 2020’s No. 4 overall pick, since the club has already traded away multiple future first-rounders. Williams’ ability to help the team this year may also be limited, since a wrist injury is expected to sideline him for most or all of the regular season.
Still, based on Scotto’s reporting, it sounds as if Chicago will likely hang onto Williams. One Bulls player who is available in the right deal is 2019 lottery pick Coby White, rival executives tell Scotto.
Here’s more from the HoopsHype Podcast:
- Hawks forward Danilo Gallinari could be had for a first-round pick or as part of a larger package, rival executives tell Scotto. I’m very skeptical any team will be willing to give up a first-rounder for Gallinari unless they can dump an unwanted long-term contract on Atlanta. Scotto adds that execs believe Hawks forward Cam Reddish is more likely than not to be on the move at the deadline.
- Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith and Thunder forward Kenrich Williams are among the role players on modest contracts who are drawing trade interest from playoff teams, says Scotto. Oklahoma City is obviously more likely than Dallas to be a seller, but rival executives believe there may be an opportunity to poach Finney-Smith since he and Jalen Brunson are free agents in 2022 and re-signing both would likely make the Mavs a taxpayer.
- Playoff-caliber teams are also monitoring Rockets veterans Eric Gordon and Daniel Theis, according to Scotto. They’ve been mentioned multiple times this season as potential trade candidates, since they probably don’t fit the timeline of a rebuilding Houston squad.
- League sources tell Scotto that Thunder rookie Aaron Wiggins is a good candidate to have his two-way contract turned into a standard deal at some point this season.
Stop with the Patrick Williams fake trades. They do not need to trade for overrated Jerami Grant. I hate these nerds
Jerami Grant does not fit what the bulls are looking for in any way, they do not need another player who needs a ton of shots, some of these reporters are stuck in the era where just get as many big names as possible, team building matters again and the bulls need a rebounder who is ok taking 2 shots a game if need be who can also stick defense, finney-smith would be a far better addition than jerami grant even though I also find him being moved incredibly unlikely
Well said. A return of Thad Young would be nice.
Yeah, Coby for Thad or Theis would actually be a reasonable move, and help PWill as he develops with strong mentorship.
The bulls can’t trade for Thad, and I don’t believe theis either, for 1 year after trading them.
Trading a 21 year old, top 5 draft pick from two years ago that averaged 15 and 5 last year for a 29 year old backup or a 33 year old journeymen is not a remotely reasonable move.
Likely:
– OKC will make some kind of deal and, of course, they will be sellers.
– ATL will move at least one contract, and will likely move another before the start of next season. They have 152 mm on the books for 22-23 for 10 guys (or 135 mm for 9 guys if they release Gallo). 125 mm for 2023-24 for 7 guys (without Hunter or Reddish on the payroll).
Unlikely:
– CHI trades PW, regardless.
– DAL trades DFS, unless they receive a better player in the deal.
Agree 100% except not sure on Dallas.
so, does that make you just 51.5% ‘agree’
So, the Bulls will be just another team that will Not win a title, just from coveting a mediocrity.
Grant does not have to be a frequent shooter. He wasn’t until he got to Detroit and had to be.
Did he go to DET and then determine he had to be a frequent shooter, or did he go to DET because he was determined to be a frequent shooter?? His own words (and the fact that he left a better team offering the same $$) suggest the latter.
Grant is a PERFECT fit for the Bulls, if he accepts the role he had in OKC and DEN. Even then, though, IMO you don’t trade PW. He’s a lower cost / controllable foundation piece – their only one.
The Bulls aren’t trading Williams. They can stop spreading that nonsense anytime. White is much more likely. His on again off again defense will get old. Playing defense in the NBA is all about want to. And he only wants to when he wants to. Between White and their 5 million dollar trade exception, They should be able to get someone decent. Williams is still only 19 and has already got the cast off so he’ll be back this season I would think. At 19, I healed pretty fast also.
Maybe this is crazy talk, but how bout:
ATL: Coby, PWill, Derrick Jones Jr
Chi: John Collins
Salaries match sufficiently. Pick(s) and/or pick swaps could be involved as well. Bulls get a starting 4 that adds a strong interior presence they need to make a title push. ATL probably needs to make another move or two (could be a 3 teamer), but they get 3 young assets that are controllable and have Bird rights. They could opt to hold on to all the pieces, but they would also have a ton of young players in the backcourt and on the wings that could be flipped/compilated for something else. Might be a lot of work for ATL, but ultimately they’re getting rid of an unhappy player and shaking up their roster in a way that seems necessary at this point.
Works great. For Atlanta. Bulls get hosed. I’ll pass.
Disagree. I’d much rather have Collins than the other names being thrown around (Barnes, Grant, etc.). And since Collins is locked up, it would be a move not just for this year, but long term. They’d be dealing from positions of depth to address a position of need, and it would give them frontcourt stability for a post-Vuc world (ie 2024-2026).
No. Way too expensive for Bulls.
Agree. Collins is signed for 4 more years at about 25 million a year and the Bulls gotta pay up for Zach after this year. Need to cut not add payroll for the future. Great, Derrick Jones Jr. just hurt his knee anyway and it doesn’t look promising.
i like the collins fit on chicago but not for that package.
Why would Hawks want more average players?
ATL gets mugged with all that trash from CHI for an All-Star level guy like JC, hard pass from ATL!
White is 2019 5th overall pick who averaged 15 and 5 last year while Williams was the 4th overall pick last year. Neither are trash by any stretch of the imagination.
Collins at 25 mil is rather pricey. I’d prefer Sabonis at 19 or Turner at 18 if the Bulls are giving up that much, but I do think that’s a good quality/level of player to go after in order to fill the Bulls obvious need at the 4/5.
At this point Wall for Simmons trade would benefit both clubs. 76ers get a player of need with Wall and Rockets get Simmons. If 76ers ask for more than Wall and second round (I think wall would be good enough alone at this point) being the best offer. Simmons may not even play if traded to any club this year. His value is probably worse than Walls right now. At least Wall will come back this year, it’s an uncertainty if Simmons would come back this year. It would give Simmons time to clear his “mind” this year and get paid. Rockets was going to do that with Wall anyways. Part of me thinks a KPJ and Wall for Simmons and draft pick, would even out the “bad reputation” and contracts.
Maybe, but Philly fans would spit like an angry camel. But it makes sense, and Wall can still play.
App has me as JohnnyTwoTimes again…
Perfect add to a delusional page.
Sixers ask, okay there’s a salary match, but what about matching the talent?
Wall still has talent and did real well with Rockets last year. Both are sitting for their own reasons. 6ers get what they need with Wall and Rockets coach Simmons back to the league. If they can influence Harden at one point, they can do the same with Simmons
Another thought Theis to Bulls and Rockets get Derek Jones Jr or Pat Williams and Gordon to Nuggets for draft capital. This giving Nuggets a 3 and D guard and 6th man. Could boost their current position too from 6th to 3rd.
this is a terrible trade for the bulls, stop.
They can all stop. Just wish I was playing fantasy basketball with people on this message board. They’re sharp as marbles. Plus Jones just tore up his knee anyway.
Well we know now that DJJ is only out 2-4 weeks and no, no one who plays fantasy basketball is talking about Williams or DJJ.
The Bulls DO need serious help at the 4. This team is not built for long term viability. Vooch and DeRozan are in their 30s, where many players skills fall off a cliff. LaVine also needs a supermax deal, which will eat more cap space.
They have to make SOME sort of quality move to shore up an obvious weakness and a move to bring back quality will cost quality. Who are you making a move for? Or are you just standing pat and saying “they might not be good enough this year, but ya never know?”
Interesting idea, Gordon to DEN and Thies to CHI, but that seems incomplete.
Not sure when Murray returns… Morris is doing fine as always but they could use a guard in between the sizes of Morris/Campuzzo and Barton/Dozier. Rookie Hyland’s PER is below 10 now.
Gordon would be tricky, I won’t lie. Denver would improve with Gordon on the wing. I really think Denver would be a great place for Gordon and it’s a win-win for both parties. EG could be this last years CP3. It’s what Denver needs to beat out Clippers or even Warriors.
Chicago can use a big man like Thies with that young team with 2 Veterans holding that club. Add Theis and have him coming in to pick up minutes, would help Chicago through the playoffs. He’s a bargain at 500k and wouldn’t cripple Chicago. I think it’s a perfect fit. Theis for a young player with 2-3 years in the league. I think it’s fair.
Theis would be a nice backup / depth pickup for the Bulls, but who are they trading to get him?
Also, Bulls need a starting PF and Theis isn’t a starter. So while I like the move as a depth signing, especially at a low cost, it doesn’t solve their biggest problem.
