After Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported on Monday that the Sixers‘ preference would be to retain Ben Simmons until the offseason in order to pursue James Harden, Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer cited sources who said the same thing.
“At the end of the day, it’s Harden all the way,” one league source told Pompey. “They want Harden, whether they get him now (or) whether they get him on a forced sign-and-trade this summer.”
The idea of the Nets trading Harden during the season can probably be ruled out. But the former MVP will be eligible for free agency this summer, so he’ll have leverage at that point if he wants a change of scenery. Still, the Sixers wouldn’t have the cap space necessary to sign Harden outright, so Brooklyn would have to get on board with the idea of acquiring Simmons in a sign-and-trade.
Sources tell Pompey that the Nets are aware of Philadelphia’s plan to pursue Harden in the offseason and know that the star guard has good relationships with Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and co-owner Michael Rubin. But Harden has previously stated that he plans to remain in Brooklyn long-term — and even if he has a change of heart, it would likely take a lot of convincing for the Nets to send him to a division rival.
“If I’m the Nets, am I giving up James Harden until I know what Ben is going to be?” one source said to Pompey. “And am I giving him up to go 100 miles away? I’m going to have to see [Harden] several different times a season.”
For what it’s worth, Pompey says people close to the Sixers deny that the team is focused specifically on Harden, reiterating that Morey just wants a star player in return for Simmons — Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard are among the other potential targets who have been frequently mentioned. Harden may be atop Philadelphia’s wish list though, and sources who spoke to The Inquirer suggested Harden would welcome playing with center Joel Embiid.
Here’s more on the Sixers:
- Some of Pompey’s sources believe potential trade partners are wary of seriously engaging in talks with the Sixers for fear of leaks. “Whenever teams inquire, it shows up in the media at some capacity within the next 24 hours,” a source told The Inquirer. “Everyone is wanting Daryl to come to them with hard proposals. No one wants to be the one to bring something in because they are afraid as soon as they do it, they’re going to be exposed.”
- One source told Pompey that trade discussions with the Sixers are also challenging because Morey has a tendency to move the goal posts — you might think you’re getting close to making a deal, then Morey will come back and ask for more.
- In a pair of stories for PhillyVoice.com, Kyle Neubeck examines the Harden rumors in an effort to determine how seriously to take them, and ranks hypothetical Simmons trade packages from most to least intriguing.
- David Murphy of The Philadelphia Inquirer advocates for patience on the Simmons front, since trading the former No. 1 overall pick represents the Sixers’ best chance to get Embiid the help he needs to turn the team into a title contender. While taking the best offer at the deadline may help in the short term, it could backfire in the longer term by limiting the team’s ceiling, Murphy writes.
Morey is a chump that is so sold on every other team thinking Simmons is some sort of messiah. Good luck with that, by the time you find a taker Embiid will be on crutches.
“At the end of the day, it’s Harden all the way,” one league source told Pompey.
This is Hot Garbage!!!
Not because I don’t think it is true or bad reporting by Pompey! Let me make that clear!
However, if the Sixers are going to waste this season, they are fools!!!
Ben Simmons is a cancer!!! He was a complete disaster for the Sixers, they should never have drafted him!!!!
SMH
Trust the process(ed) cheese. You betcha. bill-bellamy is right Embiid on crutches … they’ll be the ULTIMATE processed cheese – Velveeta before you know it. Philadelphia Warriors followed by Philadelphia Velveetas
Um, OK? I realize you were doing your best stand up routine there, but it came across as childish and sad. Do better next time, or rather just sit it out and let the adults offer their thoughts.
What in the world are you talking about?
Found Sillivan’s burner account
Trust the process baby! Velveetas all the way. Don’t take yourself so seriously, you’ll never make GM, and if you look back at some of your posts, it’s unlikely you’ll make 8th grade. ;).
The harden talk is trying to drive Simmons price up right now. Embiid is an amazing player. But if you have a choice are you playing with Durant or Embiid ?
Apparently, Harden wants to become a UFA so trading for him seems like a bad idea.
I hope Mark’s pulls a Morley and demands Simmons, Thybulle, Maxey and five first rounders in any deal for Harden.
*Morey
Then the deal won’t happen. They could also trade Simmons in offseason for picks and open up space to sign harden as an UFA. None of us know but sign and trade isn’t the only option. This does stink for Embiid because they are a 4-5 seed type of team without a trade here.
They are too far over. Losing just Simmons from the cap sheet doesnt come close to opening up a maximum slot since they are already 10s of millions over the cap they would need to be 47M under.
You would need to trade out both Simmons and Harris without almost any money coming back to free up a max slot. OKC could take money but thats pretty much the only option unless some super complicated three team deal happens.
On the other hand Giddey, Alexander, Dort, Harris and Simmons would be an interesting lineup.
From Genius to Jerk: The Daryl Morey Story
“I’m Daryl Morey, and this is my story.”
Why would Harden go to Philly lmao. Morey really thinks he’s attractive to James.
Still think if you can get Fox now that’s the best deal. You don’t have to waste an Embiid postseason to wait and see – and you get a guy who’s almost a decade younger than Harden and Dame.
Yes, he’s having a down year. But if you believe that – in a system that’s not Sacramento (who are trying to develop 3 young PGs simultaneously this season) – he can at least reach the levels of last season (20.7 PER, +3.1 OBPM 31% Usage) then I think that gives you the longest window with Embiid.
Harden (and Lillard) are both showing real signs of decline. Especially with Beard, a guy who hasn’t been known for the most rigorous offseasons, there’s really no reason to think they won’t continue to decline into their mid-30s.
Finally, you probably won’t have to give up as many future assets to get Fox, so you could use said future firsts to upgrade other elements of the roster around Fox/Joel
James Hardens had an old man’s game since he was traded to the Rockets and he’s thrived with it. Hesitations and crossovers then jack up a 3 or make the right pass he may lose a couple steps but his game will age just fine.
Totally !!!
Man if they can get Fox Buddy Barnes 71 mill for Ben and Tobias 69 mill its a great deal…hell they might even be able to get a pick in there too
Get out of Tobias and be able to go into the offseason super fluid for matching/future trades while greatly improving your 22 chances. This next offseason you will still be able to target 97% of the league for a different player of your chosing with Fox Buddy or an expiring Barnes
I agree I dont know why they need a Lillard Harden or even a Beal type in a 1-1 especially with it being JOELS team…. just find some competent mid range players and go for it! Sac has them…and are willing!!!!
I think Morey sees this and everything that was said and done will mean nothing come Feb1 and Ben will get dealt ….cant really blame Morey for posturing, its the right move today but come Feb 10 if no deal is made id be Livid as a Philly fan
Harden and Embiid will never work. And Ben is one of few that can lock down Harden. So be careful what you wish for Moreyon. How does it feel Sixer fans. To hear your GM basically giving up on this year. Rockets never won cause of Hardens EGO. Sixers are done with Harden.
Always said the two Head cases could be a problem in Bklyn………. Weeellllllll.
I was Nets I move them both now. Moreyon you can have Fat Harden. But I gotta get more than Ben. Give me Ben and Milton plus a future #1 pick. Then you can have him. Or just give me Ben and Maxey.
Then the other head case can go too. Send him to OKC. Give me SGA and Giddey plus a #1 pick. With KD this team will win at least TWO titles. Buybyeee head cases ….
The fact that you think OKC would trade away Shai, Giddey, and a 1st for Kyrie tells us everything we need to know about your understanding of basketball.
All those words just to show everyone how dumb you are.
