Hawks big man Onyeka Okongwu believes he deserves to be part of this year’s Rising Stars Game over All-Star Weekend, he told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. On the season, he’s averaged 9.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 23.3 minutes per game, though he’s only played in 16 contests to date.
“I think I should, honestly,” Okongwu said. “Everybody can see what I do out there on the court. I think my play really speaks for itself, especially defensively with what I’ve been able to do, guarding on the ball and helping. Offensively, I’ve got my confidence back. I’ve doubled my points scoring to almost 10.
“At the end of the day, we’re on a six-game winning streak playing good basketball, and I’m part of the mix, which is always a blessing. I’m thankful to be able to be on the Hawks, and we’re playing good basketball. I think, all things considered, I should get a Rising Stars nod.”
Okongwu also discussed other topics in the interview, including who he compares himself to as a player and what the team’s expectations are. Atlanta selected the 21-year-old with the No. 6 pick in 2020.
Here are some other notes from the Southeast Division:
- Magic guard Cole Anthony was fined $25K for directing profane and derogatory remarks toward a game official, the NBA announced this week (Twitter link). Anthony made his comments after the team’s 111-102 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday. He finished with 19 points, 11 assists and three steals in the contest, shooting 5-of-11 (45%).
- Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel examines whether the Heat need more versatile players in the closing moments of a game. Miami has finished with either Tyler Herro or Duncan Robinson in most of its close games, adding offense but hurting its defense. Once Victor Oladipo returns, head coach Erik Spoelstra will have another defensive option to insert when necessary.
Who is the best team in the East come playoffs time?
Bucks
Heat
Nets
Bulls
76ers if trade away Simmons?
None of the above
Hawks
Of course the Heat want more “versatile” players. I mean, come on now, what team doesn’t want more two-way, all-around players to add to its rotation?!?
Either way, Eric Spoelstra is just going to have to mix and match until he finds groupings ajd rotations that will help compliment all of his players strengths and weaknesses. That’s the difference between a good coach and a great coach, and I believe Spo is a great coach, so I have faith he will be able to figure it all out.
That’s why I’ve been so impressed with Billy Donovan this season. The Bulls don’t have hardly any solid two-way players, but they do have alot of good offensive players and they have some quality defensive players. In order to maximize the talent he’s had, Donovan has mixed and matched his guys accordingly so they can come together and each player compliments the man next to him.
AKME gave Donovan some solid pieces, and Donovan has helped them fit together perfectly!!
Everyone said the Bulls would struggle defensively, but when Donovan has had the majority of his players healthy, he had the Bulls as one of the upper tier defensive units in the league….miraculously..That was also missing one of their best young defenders in Patrick Williams, but Caruso, Ball, Bradley, Green, etc. they all helped compliment Vooch, LaVine, White, and Derozan, and together they’re a very complete team when they’re healthy and firing on all cylinders…
In my opinion, it should either be Donovan or Bicjerstaff for coach of the year…
It’s no coincidence that both the BULLS and CAVS have improved records owing to an influx of talent this season …….. the minute the BULLS lost guys to injuries, they start losing again.
Other than Lowry, the HEAT went organic and relied on player development. More than other teams, the HEAT lost players to injuries, protocols, yet they got to the top spot.
If they were to award it now, COY is easily Spo …….. Jenkins, Monty next.
What has OO done to deserve a spot in the risking stars game. He’s put up average numbers in 16 games….
It’s not all about numbers…
These kindnof showcase games are basically all about the numbers and the highlights
Played amazing defense. Helped Atlanta reach the 2nd best W streak in the NBA. Massive blocks on Giannis and Randle. Per36 15 & 9 with 2.5 blks. ORtg 138 with a DRtg of only 111.
So some bum as per 36 stats and two blocks make you one of the best rising stars?
No sir
You literally admitted you don’t watch the Hawks and are salty bc you’re a Sixers fan. Double O was just the #1 play on the ESPN Top-10 Plays of the Night. He’s electrifying, he’s great on defense, and the Hawks have been the 2nd best team in the NBA since his return and the departure of a disgruntled player.
It’s painfully obvious that you haven’t been watching this kid play
Why would I? They suck this year and I’m a Sixers supporter
Tell me you don’t watch the Hawks without telling me you don’t watch the Hawks
Clearly you didn’t see the game Sunday…
Players I’d rather see,
Rookies: Cade, Green, Mobley, Barnes, Giddey, Suggs, Wagner, Sengun and Ayo
Second year players: Ant, Ball, Haliburton, Toppin, Cole, Stewart, Poku, Bey, Maxey, Quickly and Martin Jr
That’s just a quick 20
Players you’d rather see where? Atlanta isn’t getting any of those guys for Okongwu, as much as I like him.
For the rising stars challenge Obviously
So your saying you wont watch the hawks since their bad but you would watch Martin jr and Sengun worse team: Giddey and Poku worse team: Toppin and Quickley worse team: Haliburton,Green,Cade,Bey,Suggs,Wagner,Cole.
So basically your salty Onyeka and the hawks beat you in the playoffs correct?
