The Magic are widely expected to trade Terrence Ross and/or Gary Harris before the February 10 trade deadline, assuming they can get sufficient draft capital in return, Marc Stein writes in his latest Substack column.
Ross and Harris aren’t among the top tier of players on this season’s trade market, so it may not require massive offers to get the Magic to part with one or both of them. For that reason, Stein writes, some people around the NBA view Ross in particular as a “natural target” for a team like the Jazz or Lakers — Utah and L.A. are seeking upgrades on the wing but have already given up future first-round picks and may not have the assets necessary to make a run at a higher-end target.
Here are a few more trade-related updates from around the league:
- Some executives who spoke to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report believe the Wizards are open to discussing point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who hasn’t meshed especially well with Bradley Beal. While it makes sense that Dinwiddie wouldn’t be untouchable, I’d be a little surprised if the Wizards gave up on their backcourt pairing this quickly.
- Pincus adds within the same story that the Mavericks have been mentioned as a possible “dark-horse” suitor for Pistons forward Jerami Grant. A Dallas offer would likely start with Dorian Finney-Smith and Dwight Powell, says Pincus.
- Grant may well be traded at the deadline, especially if the Pistons can acquire a player like John Collins or Patrick Williams, but we shouldn’t be surprised if he stays put, writes James L. Edwards III of The Athletic. Edwards believes there’s a “real possibility” that general manager Troy Weaver decides to hang onto Grant until the offseason if he doesn’t get an offer he loves.
- Edwards also expects the Pistons to remain on the lookout for a deal that nets them a promising young big man after their acquisition of Bol Bol fell through. Edwards identifies Kings forward Marvin Bagley III and Suns center Jalen Smith as two players worth keeping an eye on.
Ross, Harris even Dinwiddie fit Cavs needs
Dins would be great there; but Cavs will likely want Rubio back.
Rubio is a goner in any Cavs trade
Strategic reasons or is he unhappy? Cavs’ needs won’t change… unless they get a Dinwiddie!
According to the article,
Lakers may not have the assets necessary to make a run at a higher-end target.
Horton Tucker is the next big thing. He is available for trade.
LA probably should of traded THT last year at the TD for Lowry. Toronto wanted THT LA refused and now desperately trying to trade him now.
Lowry would’ve been perfect for them too
Love Lowry but hes been completely miserable this year and I wouldn’t want that contract on the books
But you’re fine with Westbrook’s anchor of a contract? Interesting
I’ve made about 200-300 posts on Westbrook the last 6 months in here and in none of them I’ve ever been fine with his contract…but we are talking Lowry now
THT is the next big thing?
If he’s the next big thing, why would they trade him?
Sillivan posts require intense interpretation; reversals possible. Hey sounds like me
I think a Gary Harris for THT and Kendrick Nunn swap could work. Gary would provide some perimeter Defence and THT could fit into the Magic’s long-term plans
Lakers would have to attach 2027 First because Magic don’t view Tucker as the next big thing.
Sound awful… both THT & K-Nunn are sooo much better than Harris… I mean where to start, right?
THT has been one of the worst perimeter players in the league this year.
This also gives the Lakers NO ability to match anything in the offseason
Harris just isnt good enough to make that play
Not a Tht believer but I think he can be used better than this on a salary match for the future
Wouldn’t quite work financially (Harris is at $20m and THT and KN together are $14.5), but you could add some scrub to make it work. I dunno if that makes you any better in Lakerland though. THT has been awful but at least is playable. Harris is a bit better than that but at the price of a month or two of Kendrick Nunn, I think that’s a bad deal.
Beal looks disinterested and dinwiddie looks slow. Both need to be moved as the wizard’s begin a full rebuild in my opinion.
Gotta wonder if Dinwiddie is back to 100% yet-
He looks a step slower and hesitant every time he enters the lane. Not good considering he never hung his hat on shooting in the first place
His stats look terrible. He was playing well early on wasn’t he what happened?
Ive only seen about 4 Wizards games this year-
Dins looked hesitant and a half step slow
Beal, like others who probably watch him more eluded too, just seemed kind of bored.
But Wash is a more well rounded team than years past today, maybe the eye is just seeing less involvement from Beal and tricking it into thinking it as disinterest.
I suspect Dins does not naturally like shooting like most do.
Answer: A team signs a FA to a big multi-year contract, and then, prior to the TD in his first year, trades him in a salary dump.
Question: What is a course of action that’s routinely suggested on message boards, but has never actually happened.
If THT was even close to the “next big thing” I highly doubt the LAL would be trading him, let alone him, Nunn AND a 1st round pick? Come on man…
