The Wizards blew a 35-point lead against the Clippers on Tuesday, suffering a humiliating 116-115 defeat, raising questions about Washington’s direction, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic. Wizards guard Bradley Beal said it should’ve been an easy win, but that’s not how the game transpired.
“It just should have been a game where starters get their rest, plain and simple, right?” Beal said afterward. “That’s what type of game it should have been, and we didn’t. And Coach (Wes Unseld) kept saying, ‘Stay locked in. Stay locked in. Keep pushing.’ But for whatever reason, we relax, like we can just flip on a switch and be great.”
Beal should be held culpable too, Robbins writes. He was on the court for the majority of the fourth quarter in which the Wizards were outscored 40-22, and only half-heartedly attempted to foul Justise Winslow, a poor free throw shooter, who Unseld had instructed the team to foul in the closing seconds. Making matters worse, Beal proceeded to commit a cardinal basketball sin by weakly fouling Luke Kennard on a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left while Washington was clinging to a 115-112 lead. Kennard made the three and sank the free throw, clinching the victory for the Clips.
After a 10-3 start to the season, the Wizards have gone 13-22 since, now holding a 23-25 record, 10th in the East. Forward Kyle Kuzma thinks “somethin’ got to change.” After the game, Kuzma was asked whether he agreed with Unseld that the team stopped competing after building the large lead, per Robbins.
“Everybody stopped,” Kuzma said. “It felt like defensively we didn’t do anything. We’ve got to do a better job of reading the room from the bench as well. It’s a team loss. Everybody lost tonight.”
Here’s more on the Wizards:
- Beal recently joined Adrian Wojnarowski’s “The Woj Pod” on ESPN (hat tip to RealGM). Beal knows the Wizards need to improve to be competitive long-term, but he likes being the centerpiece of the franchise. “Honestly, realizing that a franchise is willing to build around you. It’s not always like that everywhere. Like, if I go somewhere else, they’re just not going to build around you. They’ll build around what they have,” Beal said. “There’s nothing absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if I have the chance to create my own legacy and make it work here with the team that drafted me, then why not give it a shot? It it works, it works, If it doesn’t, I can say ‘At least I tried.’ That’s just who I am. That’s my blessing and curse, my loyalty. We’re transitioning, we’re going in the right direction, but we still have a lot of improvements to make.”
- Robbins and Bob Kravitz of The Athletic explore what it might type of trade package it might take for the Wizards to acquire Pacers All-Star Domantas Sabonis. Pacers owner Herb Simon says he’s disinterested in a full-fledged rebuild, so draft picks might not do the trick — in any case, the 2023 first-rounder Washington owes to Oklahoma City is protected through 2026, so any future first-round pick the team offers would have to be conditional. Kravitz says if he were Indiana’s GM, he’d want Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija, and Corey Kispert, Washington’s three most recent first-round picks, in exchange for Sabonis.

As much as some of us liked those 3 players coming out. They’ve shown us squadoosh. If I were the Pacers GM I would hang up the phone.
Not sure what was up with Hachimura to start this season but he’s shown flashes the 2 seasons prior. As far as Avdija and Kispert they’ve barely had a chance to show anything as one is a rookie and the other is only 2nd year. You’re right in the sense that since the Pacers aren’t looking to rebuild though I can’t see those 3 as anchor pieces in a Sabonis trade.
Kuzma was the one who twice took to long to throw the ball in which resulted in a TO which lead to the game winning bucket.

Finally people will start to realize that WAS is a worst team than last year, or at least they don’t have Russ to save them like they had last year, Beal was real bad the second half of last year… & so far he has been terrible this year, no effort, bad shooting… As I said before the season WAS will be very lucky to make it to the play in, it is looking even worst now!
Exactly
Russ is not perfect, but his energy was important for this team. Kuzma has a nice streak this season but he is, not better than hachimura last year. And KCP is, a good defenderbut not better than Matthew’s in the second half season
Wash is a lot deeper this year so usage stats were always bound to drop for Beal
Things get interesting if they lose 5 of there next 6 I think in Wash
Beal is playing worst when he is on the court, it has nothing to do with usage.
I think last year Beal was playing way way better, and as the season went to him and Russ got some combination going and Russ got more comfortable and did well.
This season they started really strong thanks to Dinwiddie Harrell and Kuzma. However everyone on that team seems to be out of form and low in confidence besides Kuzma he’s still going well.
Wizards need to decide what they want to do..
Half the team is build to be competitive (Beal Dinwiddie Harrell KCP etc) and half the team is build to be young and rebuilding (Kispert, Avdija, Gafford, Kuzma, Hachimura etc).
Do they trade away Beal and embrace the rebuild or do they give up some of the young guys to be more competitive?
I’d try do abit of both without giving up to much or being fully committed.
Wizards: Robert Covington and Jusif Nurkic
Blazers: Davis Bertans, Deni Avdija and a protected first
Then try get back a first for Harrell at the deadline
To basically void the one you gave up
Wizards then line up
1. Dinwiddie. Holiday
2. Beal. KCP
3. Covington. Kispert
4. Kuzma. Hachimura
5. Nurkic. Gafford/Bryant
Blazers don’t get a great return, with Bertans terrible contract but he could find some form. RoCo and Nurkic are likely to leave for free in FA. Deni Avdija is a solid young player and has shown promise plus your also getting a first round pick.
Wizards would be a lot better with these two vets. Nurkic gets you plenty of rebounds and can pass the ball well. RoCo is a solid 3 and D wing which is what you need with Beal and Kuzma. Off the bench Kispert and Hachimura get a great opportunity along with the young centres. KCP gives you a bit of a veteran head.
Come end of the season if Beal demands a trade you can let both RoCo and Nurkic walk and create 20mil of cap space just like that. If Beal wants to stay they you should be able to afford to bring back both or invest elsewhere in FA. It’s the perfect balance of getting better now, but not being to committed with money and also having not given up to much either
Borderline play-in and tax repeater Blazers are not interested by Bertans 3Yr 46M$ contract …
No body is that’s why you attach a first and Avdija to get rid of it
Beals “legacy” is going to be “he was a good player on a crappy team”
Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija, and Corey Kispert for Sabonis? This Kravitz guy needs to be working in a grocery store if this is the type of stuff he thinks should be happening. The trades that get mentioned as rumor or good ideas on this page are just absolutely absurd.
You left out the three firsts from a subpar team, if unprotected, can be franchise altering.
I agree, terrible trade idea that would never happen.
Too many different contracts and no real hierachy/chemistry beetween the new LA guys, Dinwiddie, even with covid the rotation is banana …
I would give this group a chance to click as a team till 2023 TD but will trade asap Bertans + Bryant even Rui to any team with cap Space like SAS, Det or Pels for guys like Poetl or Grant, Valanciunas…
i will be shocked if WAS commits the super-max they can offer to Beal. It will be insane and will get them stuck in the good but not great category wich teams should avoid.
This FO is all about Beal for years like Blazers with Dame… The RW trade gave them good valuable players + Dinwiddie so i cannot see them rebuilding now around Rui, Avdija, Bryant or Kispert (Big fail @#15 in last draft) … Beal future albatros contract can also be dealt when big markets regain more cap space
