Raptors shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. has been proving his mettle as a valuable addition to a scrappy Toronto team, opines Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca. Trent has firmly carved out a role for himself as a starter with the Raptors.
“It’s big,” head coach Nick Nurse said of Trent’s current scoring tear (31+ points in five straight games). “It gives you a huge lift and then he gives you somewhere to go, too, with some play calls and then it usually gives you something to counter back against, too, because he’ll draw so much attention that we can go back to someone else. That’s big.”
After shipping Norman Powell to the Trail Blazers for Trent at the trade deadline last season, the Raptors showed how much they expected out of Trent when they signed him to a three-year, $54MM contract in the offseason. Grange notes that Nurse and the rest of the Raptors organization emphasized their interest in seeing Trent step up as a defender and develop into a more significant three-point catch-and-shoot scorer.
Trent’s season has been so good, writes Josh Lewenberg of TSN, that the 23-year-old may be too valuable to the 26-23 Raptors to use as a potential trade chip ahead of next week’s deadline.
“It’s just the opportunity to shoot and score, unlimited shots, kind of let me go out there and play,” Trent said. “You don’t have to worry about anything. I don’t have to look over my shoulder anymore. If I miss a shot or kick it off my leg, my coaching staff believes in me. They’re allowing me to play and allowing me to roll with the punches.”
There’s more out of the Atlantic Division:
- As the NBA trade deadline approaches, Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston previews potential options available to the Celtics. The team is coming off a hot January, in which it went 10-6 to move to a respectable 28-25 on the season, still only good for the No. 9 seed in the crowded East. Because Boston remains mired in relative mediocrity, Forsberg suggests the club could be in tax-avoidance mode, making big transactions less than likely before the 2022 offseason. That said, Forsberg speculates that the team could opt to offload guards like Romeo Langford or Dennis Schröder, among others.
- The Sixers could face an intriguing opportunity at the trade deadline. Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer ponders what Philadelphia should do if adding Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal suddenly becomes a viable option. Beal could opt out of the last year of his current deal with the Wizards and become an unrestricted free agent this summer. With that reality in mind as the deadline approaches, Beal could force Washington’s hand and compel the only team he has ever known to trade him. Pompey wonders if the Sixers will consider adding a high-level isolation scorer in his prime, even if Beal is having a down scoring year by his standards and has never been much of a defender. The team’s reluctance to include Tyrese Maxey or Matisse Thybulle in an outgoing trade could limit its ability to add a star player.
- Nets shooting guard James Harden did not mince words when discussing Brooklyn’s current six-game losing slump, per Nick Friedell of ESPN. “I think we’ve done too much talking,” Harden said. “It’s just, we got to go out there and do it, and do it consistently. We have times when we’re great, and we have times when we’re really bad. We just got to find some consistency throughout the course of games more times than not.” It should be noted that Harden, averaging 22.5 PPG, 10.2 APG and 8.0 RPG on the season, said this on a night when he shot 2-of-11 from the floor and netted a total of four points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and six turnovers.
Portland really fumbled this one. Gary Trent Jr is the far superior player to Norman Powell, cheaper, and younger, yet they traded GTJ for Norm straight up and then signed him to a larger extension than they would have had to give Gary. Another W for Masai, and another L for the Portland front office during the Dame Lillard regime.
@Theone
their slash lines FG/3PT/FT% are very similar with a slight edge to Powell. Their ppg are about equal. Powell is 1/$18 mil more on his contract than Trent. not a big deal.
Trent is a way better defender and several years younger.
No, on defense. Powell is the superior defender and it’s not close. Trent has been better than expected on that end, but there is no substitute for Powell’s elite defensive measurables (they’re the only reason he got drafted), and they’ve generally translated into him being able to cover wings of all sizes and quickness levels comfortably. Trent’s couldn’t. That’s why POR made the deal.
Age, yes, Trent is significantly younger. That’s why TOR made the deal. Powell’s age didn’t align with their other pieces.
I’ve watched virtually every Raptors game in the last decade and I don’t agree with this, but maybe it’s recency bias.
Powell was awesome for the Raps as well. This trade is more of a wash than a steal.
Powell was beloved by Raptors fan base but he never reached the level that GTJ has achieved this season. Another home run by Masai.
Raptors have more room for a non-Lowry now, and more need. Powell got into an easygoing manner more appropriate for his assured backup role.
Well they are both good.
Agreed. I always liked Trent’s game, but with Dame and CJ in Portland’s backcourt, he just never got the chance to fully show what he could do.
I understand why Portland pulled the trigger at the time, needing a SF instead a guard, but but they still should have seen the potential in Trent to be the better player long term.
I like Maxey and Thybulle contracts
If 76ers trade them away, they won’t be able to manage luxury tax AND depth
I like the Celtics idea of acquire Beal and keep Brown
Need third team to help
Give the raptors a true center + Bradley Beal.. cooking’
PHI is reticent to include Tyrese Maxey or Matisse Thybulle in an outgoing trade? Sure, nobody should expect them to value their players at the same level they did last season or earlier this season; after all, things have changed.
If Beal is going to “force Washington’s hand”, he’d better hurry up with it… Trading deadline Feb.10! Too many red flags for that article to read it.
Beal gets traded the team gets his bird rights and can offer him a 5 yr max right?
Yup
Philly is going after Beal Harden and Dame in the summer and at this stage Harden is the main target. However if Beal becomes a little more available before the deadline we should go after him aggressively.
Ben Simmons, Mattsie Thybulle and 2 firsts for Beal
What? Hard pass
You have to compare other offers with the understanding you’re signing him to a 5 yr max, there needs to be some kind of gentleman’s ageeement.
But Thybulle is expendable. You can’t pay him beyond his rookie deal, he just isnt improving his shot enough to warrant another contract imo. So I’m fine including him in any deal for Beal or Harden. Dame wants that extension hes going no where.
The firsts will be late in the draft. I’m good with this deal. Other teams would be offering like 4 1sts and a player anyway. That’s the new norm.
I wouldn’t completely resist trading Thybulle if it was for Beal,Harden or Dame, but I don’t know if he’s priced himself out of the 6ers range.Danny Greens hit will be coming off the books when it’s time to pay Thybulle, and then Harris’ money comes off when it’s Maxeys turn.
Id offer Simmons with Curry,Korkmaz, and 2 1sts,and I’d offer to take back Bertans.Maybe throw in 2 2nds and pick swaps as well, because I think the 2nd 1st might have to be pushed down the line with Okc having some rights over the 2025 pick.
I would not offer Curry up in this deal. Have to think about your bench. Curry would be the ultimate 6th man scoring option. You honestly need to get Aaron Holiday back as well in the trade or have another option for a back-up PG. They have Furkan handling point guard duties. Imagine if you also took away Curry. You can’t play Beal 48 mpg. And look at that 2nd unit below, who is scoring if you traded Curry?
You’d add Shake’s money to the deal: Simmons, Thybulle, Shake, 22 and 24 1st.
Maxey – Holiday
Beal – Curry – Joe
Green – Furkan – CBJ
Harris – Niang – BBall
Embiid – Drummond
If I’m the Wizards I may not even want Simmons. So maybe they are thinking a 3-team deal. And the picks are simply sourced from that 3rd team.
Kings send 3 1sts, TT, and Buddy and Sixers add a 1st.
Wolves send 4 1sts, Beasley, Prince, and Okogie.
Thunder have tons of picks and cap space.
It’s not really that I would want to give up Curry,it’s that I’m trying to offer enough to temp Washington into making the deal by taking Bertans back, while also holding onto both Maxey and Thybulle.
Bertans is a pretty bad deal. I would almost say take Dinwiddie instead. Hard to imagine Doc trading his son in law. But if I had to choose a bad contract Dinwiddie all day and it’s a position of need.
If they’d give us Dinwiddle instead of Bertans,I’d definitely do that instead.I just don’t know if Dinwiddle has negative value,Bertans definitely does.Part of my thinking with taking him back would be to stretch him after next season,to save some cap for Thybulle. And I’d basically look at it as Beal taking Currys spot, and then I’m letting Bertans,Reed and Joe battle it out for Korkmaz’ minutes.Plus a roster spot opens up for the buyout market.
Washington would save a full year of guaranteed salary with Bertans, wouldn’t be as much with Dinwiddle.6ers also can’t trade 24s pick, they owe Okc a top 6 protected pick in 25.They can deal this year’s or next years, and then the next available after Okc gets their pick.
I don’t think note about 25s pick didn’t show up in Fanspo when I tried the trade otherwise yea I’d have used a different years pick.
Based on his down year there are rumors that they are looking to move Dinwiddie already. His salary is similar to Bertans.
If they are going into a rebuild, if they kept one of Bertans or Dinwiddie in theory should thrive and boost their trade value for the following seasons trade deadline by being the main guy on offense outside of Kuzma.
It’s from the AL Horford/Danny Green swap…2025 top 6 protected,26 & 27 top 4 protected, and then it becomes 2 2nds if not conveyed….And unless Morey completely screws the team up between now and the 24-25 season, the 2025 pick is Okc’s.
Yeah I think Beal makes the most sense for Philly for a few reasons. He’s younger than Dame and Beard—so I’d feel more confident that his down year this season is a blip more than a trend. (Don’t feel the same about the other 2)
Also—Maxey is proving he’s a legit PG prospect. Beal would fit more smoothly next to him than the other two, who are more ball dominant.
Downside is that it feels like Beal has been on the block for 5 years now…not sure how confident I feel that he’s going to be moved
Sixers look set to go after Harden in the offseason with Beal and Dame also possibilities.
However If Beal is a possibility before the deadline we should go after him aggressively.
If he signals to the Wizards he wants to leave albeit now or in the summer, surely the Wizards look to move him and get a return for him.
In which case we can offer Beal a playoff team, still in the east and capable of being a title contender with a good locker room.
Wizards can get back a former all nba player and all star that was the first overall pick and more.
I’d offer up Ben Simmons, Mattise Thybulle and 2 protected firsts.
If the Wizards turn that down I can’t see them getting a better package for a rebuild. I’m guessing because of Beals loyalty they will want to send him to a place where he wants to be and for that reason I don’t think the Rockets, Knicks or another rebuilding team would be an option.
As a Simmons fan, I actually think he could do well with Washington too. Think he would work with Dinwiddie. He may make Bertans a decent stretch big again. Could bring the best out of Kispert and Kuzma aswell
Tried to tell people about Gary Trent Jr. coming out of college..Dude is just a grinder, talented, and doesn’t take no for an answer. Anytime I see those three attributes in a player, my money will always land on him to become a stud player!!
Of course I also said the samething about Wendell Carter Jr., but injuries have just sapped his career thus far, unfortunately.
It sucks too, because with a healthy WCJ and by keeping their 1st Rounders instead of Vooch, the Bulls would be set up SIGNIFICANTLY better for sustainable future success..
I do like me some Vucevic though, but he just needs to become more consistent on a nightly basis. The Bulls win when he does well, and when he doesn’t they lose. The stats back it up, and oddly enough it ia just that black and white..
So, in order for the Bulls to make any kind of run, they’re DEFINITELY going to need to acquire more front court depth to keep Vooch’s minutes somewhat down, and also so they can have someone else come in and help out when he’s having his random, but sadly fairly frequent, 4-15 shooting nights..
The dude is averaging 17 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists as the third option. He isn’t the problem.
Favors for Jones and a 2nd matches perfectly. Harrell, TT, Nance also options in the price range.
Assuming the Bulls would have used their 2021 first on a 4… Given what Pat Williams demonstrated his rookie year, and their plans for filling the 1 in free agency… It would be F.Wagner or J.Kuminga pairing inside with W.Carter and PW backing up… a much better look than Vucevic, Williams & (?) inside.
I am concerned about Vooch in a playoff series, and PW’s stats at the 4 compared to at the 3.
(Surely the Bulls would not have taken Suggs, Giddey or Mitchell with all the conspiring with Lonzo & Caruso.)
They have the EC #1 team anyway!
Then you will be glad to know that WCJ is having an excellent season in ORL!
Really proving how very good he is!
Mark my words
Teams are not necessary to trade away Beal, Harden and Lillard
If you want them, you will need to make huge overpaid payments
Ex
John Collins, Hunter, Okongwu and 3 Firsts for Beal and Bryant
Feel like Boston will stay pat at the TDE minus a Dennis dump. Trading for guys like Brunson or Grant just means they need to get paid this summer, which locks in a team that might still be quite a ways from contending.
Feel like Stevens will reassess in July to see if this core makes sense to keep together moving forward.
yup.. they have to dump one salary to avoid tax, skunk hair makes the most sense.
Agreed. At least I hope they don’t touch their 5 starters or Grant or Josh. Celtics have never been healthy for years! It’a Avery, Crowder, Hayward, Kyrie, Brown, etc. Let’s see what they’ve got with their new coach getting Jayson & Jaylen to pass. Stay healthy Celts!
Ha ha stupid Brooklyn
Why are they stupid? You think they’re playing great and Harden is wrong?
Right now I almost take anyone. But PG has been an issue for so long. It’s time to go get one. And if moving Randle helps . Do it.
Knicks have plenty of sweeteners to make the deal. Randle would do better in a small market.
