A source tells Marc Berman of The New York Post that DeMar DeRozan would have signed with the Knicks instead of the Bulls last summer if New York had matched Chicago’s contract offer. The Bulls inked DeRozan to a three-year, $81.9MM deal via sign-and-trade.
DeRozan’s top choice was the Lakers, but the team never made him a formal offer, the source tells Berman. Nor did the Knicks.
GM Scott Perry was interested in DeRozan, but president Leon Rose and executive VP William Wesley were sold on Evan Fournier. Perry believed that signing DeRozan could have led to Damian Lillard down the line, as the two stars are close friends, Berman relays. Obviously, the Knicks ultimately acquired Fournier.
Here’s more from New York:
- The return of Derrick Rose could provide a needed boost to the struggling Knicks, writes Steve Popper of Newsday. “When you look at Derrick when he’s on the floor and you look at the plus-minus of the players, he impacts it in a very positive way,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “And he’s always been that way. Because he gives you the transition game, he gives you the pick-and-roll game, he can play on the ball, he can play off the ball, so it adds a lot to our team.”
- In Zach Lowe’s latest ’10 things’ column for ESPN (Insider link), he writes that New York’s starting unit has been a disaster all season, and has been outscored by 14 points per 100 possessions, one of the worst marks in the league. He points to Kemba Walker, Fournier, and Julius Randle as the weak links on defense, with Randle’s regression from last season being especially disappointing. Lowe says to “expect everything to be on the table for the Knicks in the summer.”
- In a separate article for The New York Post, Berman explores what the hiring of Gersson Rosas means for the Knicks’ front office. Rosas has multiple ties to the organization, Berman notes, as he shares the same agent as Thibodeau from Creative Artists Agency. Rose was a longtime agent at CAA prior to becoming the Knicks’ president. Rosas and Thibodeau also worked together for several years in Houston.
I’m so sick of hearing Thibs lies I can’t stand it.
I can’t believe fans can even watch the games any more.
I tuned in to the last game just because I heard someone guarantee the win when they were up 23 late and I knew Thibs would still screw it up.
The fact that I was rooting for the Nets to beat the Knicks is something I’ll hold against Thibs until I die.
They’re not lies to Thibs. He actually believes what he says. That’s the unfortunate thing the Knicks are now learning.
Good job Knicks. Lol
A swallower …….
What makes you think he would sign.
Facts are not your strong suit. After signing our own FA. There wasn’t enough money to sign him. Plus his age is not in our time line. So DeR is gonna do what. 4 more wins. PG is the main issue here.
The Knicks don’t have a timeline, you are rebuilding for over 10 years now.
That’s more than GoT was on air, it’s not a timeline.
What makes you think he wouldn’t sign?? Your own FA were garbage and shouldn’t been resigned.
Everyone preferring Fournier over DeRozan should be fired. Every fan who was OK with it should apologize.
Really I was under impression Thibs and Rose are here one yr. And this is yr two. Get off the mushrooms lol. Make believe worlds stop after age 5. This a true GENIUS
You are delusional al. Just saying you are in year 2, when you actually are in year 10 of a rebuild says a lot about fan quality in New York.
Agreed. He would not be having the same season in NYC, different team, different goals, different timeline.
Don’t forget that he’s playing for Billy Donovan. I’m sure DeRozan is grateful for that in hindsight.
Demar been great under numerous coaches. Don’t y’all remember how great he was in Toronto? He’s their all-time leading scorer lol. Billy Porter could coach the team & he’d still do #s
He was so good in TOR that they got rid of him so they could win a title.
He’s done the same thing throughout his career. There’s a reason why he’s a perennial all-star & Fournier isn’t
True, but let’s not act like he’d be putting up a career year with the Knicks.
That’s irrelevant, the Knicks would be better with him. Not having a career tear with the Knicks like he’s do ng with the bulls only speaks about the garbage level of most Knicks players vs the bulls
Wasn’t there some reason DDR could Not sign in NY?— I recall there was something technical besides Rose/Wes disinterest.
Another source says the Knicks could be in a playoff spot if they were winning more games.
Let’s not worry about facts when we want to make a point. Knicks signed their own FAs first. Noel, Burkes, Rose probably got too much. That’s Thibs loyalty working there. There was no money for DeRozan. Google it ……
Plus he’s not in our time line. A Rebuilding team don’t need over 30 plus players. Even Fournier, Kemba, Noel, Burkes all contracts are not guaranteed and can easily be moved for 2023. When we will have plenty of cap space. And our young players will be two yrs older. RJ, Grimes, Obi, Mitch. Grimes, NcBride, Sims, Cam, Quickley that’s what rebuilding is. Plus add in all the picks in those Two yrs.
Not saying it’s going to work. But there is a plan here in place. Unfortunately 15 mins of fame mentality. Doesn’t have the fortitude to see it thru. That’s been our biggest problem since the Ewing pick. So again it’s Year Two of Thibs and the Rebuild. Me I’d rather have another lottery pick this yr. That’s the smart play. Only the weak will fall pray to false expectations. Fc the media and geniuses. See the rebuild thru. Trade up to top 6-8, there is a nice player there.
DeRozan and Dame is what they are selling you. Yeah just like Kyrie and KD would sign.
You are correct, sir.
If the Knicks get a lottery pick their giving the young man to a coach who seems to detest young players. How is a 36 yr old Taj Gibson playing more than Obi? If Toppin is that bad then get rid of him. But we know that’s not the case.
With Barret out how has Reddish not been playing 30+ minutes a game? Because Thibs says let’s wait for a busted 33 yr old Rose to return and save us while giving a broken Kemba 25 mpg and an underachieving Fournier 30 mpg.
Bench the lames and give the young guys a chance to develop. The season is over!
And you can say it isn’t a Thibs problem with a straight face?
Look I support Thibs. Imo young players need a strict coach who knows the gm. Thibs knew when he signed this was a rebuild. This is a Rose show in NYK. Thibs is part of that. I agree Thibs gets carried away with winning now. But even he can’t be this blind. Randle is not a #1 star. At best he’s a #3 or just a solid starter. Plus at 27 he’s an asset to upgrade. This is RJs team now. Thibs has to know this is about the future. Even though he may not always show it. Most important thing in NY is the rebuild. Thibs is expendable too.
What timeline lol? There’s guys of all ages in the Knicks rotation. How tf is Fournier in the timeline but Derozan isn’t? Dam u said so many ridiculous things in that comment smh. How are the Knicks rebuilding, they were coming off their best season in yrs, their best player is squarely in his prime & 2nd best player is a good deal past his prime
Thibs isn’t a long-term thinking coach. He’s is a right now, to hell with player health, type of coach.
Thibs can’t see past his own nose.
Knicks have never been about his yr. Thibs can be replaced too. He’s got another yr in him imo.
Another Genius who told us all here for a yr how Cam was next big thing.
DeR is 33 …. enjoy him in Chicago he’s been great.
Fournier is 26 and another asset who can be moved. I guess you don’t pay attention to all the other players age. Cam has a bigger future here than Fournier. You witless Genius. Go cry about race theory
Fournier is 29 and can probably only be moved by attaching a pick/young player. Your agrument is getting pretty tenuous.
His third yr is not guaranteed. That’s when we got plenty of cap space. I like Fournier, he’s got plenty of time to prove his worth. He put up 41 on Celtics. He must suxx
Fournier is not the problem. Randle this yr and PG every yr is our biggest issues.
What are you smoking, fornier us 29 not 26 or 28 and DeMar is 32. Just Google man, it’s embarassing
Actually fornier is 26 ,28. Thats code for your basketball IQ. And I only smoke the high grade. And I wouldn’t be here if I was.
Ok he’s 28. We got a yr and a half to move him. But I keep him. You can always use a shooter. I don’t have an argument. You must be arguing with yourself. I’m giving you real facts about a rebuild. So go yank it
Tbh you were hyping Randle and Fournier last summer, there were some genius comments back then..
You think Robinson stays this off season?
I like Mitch. Thibs has done him no favors. He’s literally not walking right imo. He’s failed him. Mitch still has potential to be a top D center in this league and a 10 n 10 guy. There is a team who wants him. I like him, but we can also use him to upgrade. There are plenty of bigs in this draft.
Rose, Walker, Burks are all 30 and Fournier 29. Again don’t let truth ruin a mediocre argument.
Noone is gonna trade for your rubbish players by the way and you will be again in year 1 of a rebuild in 2 years. After having to salary dump them.
So, Knicks starting unit is one of, if not the worst +/- groups in the league, yet Thibs won’t give minutes to Reddish because he doesn’t want to wreck the chemistry of his rotations?!
There is almost no defensive presence in their starting five, but again, Reddish isn’t playing and McBride is only starting because of injuries.
Randle had a breakout season last year, and the Knicks had a chance to see if it was a one off, or was sustainable by just picking up his option, but instead decided to give him a huge extension.
Taj is playing more MPG than Toppin.
Tom, why don’t you call Luol and Jo Noah to see if they’re interested in coming out of retirement to move RJ and Mitch to the bench!
Thibs needs to go, but somehow Perry, the only sane one of the group will be the only guy fired at the end of the year, and will be replaced by Rosas.
UGH!
Now Thibs does deserve criticism. He’s also riding Randle too long. But we got no PG especially with Rose out. Last yr has given us false hope. Randle is prime example of that. He’s trying way too hard. And is way off his game this yr. At this point I’m all in on playing Cam, McBride, Grimes, Obi, Quickley, Sims all should get mins. They can at least increase their value.
Sure Thibs. 33 year old DRose gonna turn the season around. I swear Thibs conscious mind is stuck in 2010 and his basketball philosophy in 1980.
Have you already forgotten about how good DRose was last season
DRose averaged 15/4/3 last year. Let’s not get carried away here.
Those numbers aren’t gonna save a season.
For this season, “save” is an excessive goal. But D-Rose’s stuff is what is counted on for the system to work like it did. People were talking MVP, albeit overenthusiastically. (20 letters there!)
The word that hovers in the background: tanking. Too soon to speak of it?
The ‘bockers need to sign another guy named “Frank”. That’s their hope for the future.
Perry should have been fired a while ago; keeping legacies from prior FO’s around has been a Knick issue forever. If he actually recommended a DDR pursuit at the CHI contract numbers, then that’s just more evidence of why. Neither DDR or that contract came close to fitting the parameters of what the NYK FO was looking for or could have rationally pivoted to.
CHI’s talented FO chief is the guy I originally wanted for the Knicks, and my preseason choice for EOY. NO WAY, would he have pursed DDR for this Knick team, as constituted prior to this season. Nor would any competent FO. The CHI team he inherited was different, and, as significantly, the direction he got from the top was as well.
Also, the CHI situation after the Vucevic and Ball additions, should have been a more attractive situation for DDR. So, I don’t know if I buy that all we had to do was match the CHI offer. Truth is we were long out of the running at those numbers and nothing said by anyone at that point is meaningful.
NY and Knicks are always used to add fuel to stories and takes. Comes with being biggest market especially for Ball. Personally I love DeR. But he’s never signing and at 33 I go another direction. So it’s just baseless, scapegoating, faulting and irresponsible to even go there.
I remember when Bron was a FA he was going to sign in NY too.
Chicago has also done a good job of finding role players and people down there in the draft. Toppin and Reddish should be playing.
You have to give a rook 20 games starting to see what he has. Robert Williams looked lost for about his first 30 games but the Celtics stuck with him and now what?
82M$ contract was an overpaid contract by a whole lot of experts around the NBA due to the overall cap space available … Karnisovas took a clear risk on this one and Rose couldn’t matched that deal at that moment, but a DeRozan type of guy is clearly what the Knicks need to be in the PO battle … I think Rose will help the team to win more games
Those experts should focus on the correct numbers. EF was given 3 years for 54 mm (guaranteed, and even with the team option it’s not close to 82 mm).
I don’t know what overpaid means (UFAs go to the highest bidder). Are they saying it’s a bad contract (now)? I don’t think EF is a good fit, but I don’t see a bad contract. He’s putting up the same numbers, for about the same salary, as he did at the end of his ORL contract. The ORL contract was traded for a pair of 2nd round picks (with no contract coming back to ORL, so, that was clearly a good contract, albeit not by much). He’s older, but still in his prime and will be for the balance of this deal. Why is this NYK contract so much worse?
Nix will not compete even if Jesus himself were to come down from heaven as piint guard player/coach. So why anguish about DeRozan? He might have scored 30 per game in a 30-win season, which would be just good enough to get a worse draft pick.
Now that’s the Dolan Knicks. You gotta change some day. It’s gotta be about the youth now.
Everyone in NY and the world knows we overachieved last yr. Hawks showed us that in playoffs. Yet Hawks have not beaten us this yr.
No one expected Knicks to be out of playoffs this yr. But at best we win in first rd. To me it’s better to have reality than false hope. Knicks got plenty of young talent. We got plenty of picks. Another lottery pick just adds to the youth movement. Thibs is not in charge here. Rose is and we are in a rebuild. Anyone who cares about this should look at top 10 in draft. Plenty of real talent there. We can also easily trade up. Personally I’m real good with another lottery pick.
Leon Rose’s surrounded by CAA clients is reminiscent of Brodie Van Wagnen and the Mets. Is that the real story here? Agents should stay out of the front office too many conflicts of interest.
That does seem a little shady. Should be a moratorium period to avoid the revolving door conflict of interest.
NY is where the NBA wants to see a competitive team. It’s better business for everyone. He’s here to make the Knicks well again. Doesn’t mean a championship. But if you make them competitive and young. Then you know FA are going to come. It’s like the saying goes !!!!!!
“If You Build it, They will come”
Al, I love your enthusiasm for the Knicks. I feel the same way as a Pistons fan. I could be complaining but they have no where to go but up. Knicks not quite in that same position but your positive attitude is appreciated.
Thank you for that. We as fans have to live with their direction. So why look at the bad side of that. Plus I think building thru draft is the best way to go.
I agree. The Pistons will have a top 3 pick again this year and will most definitely end up with a young stud. I hope the draft strategy pays off for them, though I don’t think Casey is the long term solution as coach for such a young team.
I’m not a coach basher by nature but what the Knicks are getting from Thibs is exactly what Minnesota got. Not saying it’s all his fault but he is running the show and this roster is good enough to make the playoffs.
Yeah I can see that. But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. He came into this knowing it’s a rebuild. So I’ll give him three yrs. He’s a life long Knick guy. His dad took him to gms. He knows what we want here. It ain’t happening in a few yrs.
We have to get a better pic of Demar
Knick should build around rj barret. I believe he can be great player.give him great robin, move other player who want to be batman like randle, kemba walker.fournier can be good robin.add floor general player.
