Despite trading a protected first-round pick for Cam Reddish last month, the Knicks haven’t shut down inquiries about their new young wing, as Ian Begley of SNY.tv relays. Reddish was brought up in trade discussions with at least one other team, although it’s not clear who initiated the conversation.
As Begley notes, at 24-31 and having lost 10 of their last 12 games, nothing should be considered off the table for the Knicks, so they’re likely just seeing how other teams value Reddish.
Because he was just traded, Reddish can’t be aggregated with another player in a larger deal for salary-matching purposes — he could still be dealt in a multi-player trade, but New York wouldn’t be able to add his salary to another player’s within that trade in order to acquire a higher-salaried player.
Begley believes the Knicks are unlikely to flip Reddish at the deadline unless they receive a “significant player” on a similar contract.
Here’s more from New York:
- In a separate article for SNY, Begley writes that the Knicks have had trade discussions involving Evan Fournier. The Knicks and Pelicans had dialogue about Fournier with New Orleans receiving draft compensation, but the talks fell apart. The Pelicans have since traded for CJ McCollum, so they’re likely no longer interested in Fournier.
- The Knicks called the Trail Blazers about McCollum prior to him being traded, but were unable to provide the cap relief Portland was after, Begley surmises.
- Begley notes that Alec Burks continues to be involved in trade calls. It’s unclear which teams might be interested in his services.
- For his part, Fournier hopes the Knicks stand pat at the deadline, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. “I really do believe we have the right pieces. We have talent, we have toughness, we have everything. And we’re not that far from playing better and getting wins. It’s just about finding a way to play and sticking with that and building confidence and all that,” Fournier said after the Knicks were blown out by the Nuggets Tuesday.
- Several teams, including the Kings, have been interested in Julius Randle, but after the Domantas Sabonis trade, Randle would be redundant in Sacramento, writes Begley.
I think the Knicks made a nice move gettin reddish, he helps on offense, but why the hell would you give a first not to play the guy? Good front office move, questionable coaching move
Thibs is getting fired. How can he be so disconnected with the FO? Someone needs to be fired. Either adapt to the players you have and put them in a position to win or just be an assistant.
Relax lol it’s his second yr. Don’t believe everything you read. He is going with Randle too long. And just enabling him. Without Rose PG is and has been our biggest issue. Get a real one and you take the ball out of Randles hands.
Thibs does have to take the heat for this yr. I agree there. Still a rebuild and all about the youth.
The fact that it is Thibs’ second year means nothing. Going back 20 years to when Van Gundy resigned, here’s how long each successive coach was around for:
Don Chaney – 184 games, ~2.2 seasons
Lenny Wilkins – 81 games
Herb Williams – interim twice, 44 games
Larry Brown – 1 season
Isiah Thomas – 2 seasons
Mike D’Antoni – 288 games, ~3.5 seasons
Mike Woodson – 188 games, ~2.3 seasons
Derek Fisher – 136 games, ~1.7 seasons
Kurt Rambis – 28 games
Jeff Hornacek – 2 seasons
David Fitzdale – 104 games, ~1.3 seasons
Mike Miller – 44 games
A lot of big names did not last long with the Knicks. Thibs has coached 127 games. Even if you remove interims like Herb, Rambis, and Miller, the average coach has lasted only 154 games. Statistically speaking, Thibs is a goner by season’s end.
Thibs is done, hes not worse than the FO but he’s definitely not flexible
Knicks had some great flexibility the last 2 years and in true Knicks fashion signed rubbish and thought they were being smart
But that doesn’t mean anything now. If you follow Knicks. You know that. That’s Dolans moves.
Ever since Phil came here. He’s taking a step back. But then butted heads over Melo. So after finally moving Phil. He didn’t scrap the rebuild Phil started. He kept it up and brought in new leadership. Dolan has not been over this rebuild.
After all the bad press and heat he took over the things you just posted. And giving away all our picks. He’s been backing this rebuild and staying out of it.
So it’s Thibs second yr. Rose is in charge and it’s a Rebuild. Until they trade everyone for Dame. It’s still a rebuild. I know it’s not easy to believe in Dolan.
Believe in actions. Knicks have never drafted this well or this much, high. Since before Ewing. 80% of core is youth. Randle and Fournier are only old ones. Both 27 and really might be on their way out.
I believe in the rebuild. I don’t care what Dolan or Thibs think.
But of course its their team and we always have to be on the lookout for a blow it up play. Like I’ve said since last yr. Thibs was brought in for the rebuild. You don’t rebuild in three yrs. Why is it so hard to believe. Just cause they never have done it. ???? It’s a rebuild till FA money opens up 2023.
Well that’s the point. It’s the right way to do it by the draft. That’s what we are doing. This is RJs team. Not Randles or Thibs. I believe Thibs knows that. He can’t be that clueless.
Someone needs to hold Thibs accountable. Now RJ is hurt. This is turning into a total circus. Also who gave Fournier the mic just shut up dude lol
RJ hurt playing in the final minutes of a blowout loss to Denver too. Why the starters were in is anybody’s guess. Thibs trying to prove something?
thet’s classic thibs, he did the same in Chicago
Blazers defeat LeBron and Davis tonight.
How about this?
Walker, Burks and Fournier for Westbrook and 2027 unprotected first round pick.
Lakers need shooters.
Did you watch the game? They made a ton of threes. It was turnovers and horrible interior defense that lost them the game, and lost me a money line bet lol. Davis is playing really soft right now. I didn’t see any lost moves at all and on defense he was terrible. This Lakers team is a nightmare. But shooting is definitely not the problem.
You literally pulled that trade suggestion from ESPN+.
Really Cam ….. why would this happen now.
Getting a lottery pick this year. Is not such a bad thing. Especially when it’s only yr 2 of the rebuild. Move Randle at end of yr.
Considering he just put up 28 a gm on this 4 gm west coast road trip. He can bring his value back up. Randles issues are in his head.
There is another solid starter, rotation player 10-14. I rather a smart move than a panic move. There will be more trade options at end of yr.
It’s the FO’s job to explore the value of each of their players whenever there’s a trade market that permits it (and the TD market qualifies for most, if not all, players), AND the players that they believe are available or might be.
The Knick FO is so deliberate, a part of me wishes that they were actually in serious discussions of all these supposed possible trades (actually, they’re not even reported as possible trades, just name the player they “discussed” with this or that team).
The only real item on their TO DO list is to trade a wing, and it almost has to be either Fournier, Burks or Reddish. If only because it won’t be Barrett and its very unlikely to be Grimes. So it’s not a shocker that all 3 of those guys were discussed with someone. It would disturb me if all 3 weren’t.
Cam can’t be moved with a player only on his own. You won’t get equal value back. So it’s not a possibility to move him now. Plus his upside is worth looking into this yr and next. We can just give him qualifying offer. I’m sure trades were discussed. But it would seem our players are undervalued. So why give them away by panicking. All can be moved at end of year.
I’m fine with playing young guys. And get a lottery pick to add more young talent. Only makes us deeper stronger long term. And gives us another chip to play. For a star who wants out.
It’s only Thibs 2nd year. If Knicks do t get a real PG. I rather see the young guys play. And just get ready for next yr. I want to see McBride play. I liked him better than Grimes. And Grimes looks like he got plenty upside.
Noel, Quickley, Burkes, Walker, Fournier, Mitch plus our picks. All could be moved. But I wouldn’t give them away.
Al –
What you say about Cam is true. He’s controllable for the next 6 years (practically), if we want to keep him. He can’t be aggregated in a trade.
But none of that means the FO shouldn’t assess his value in the current market. It’s their job, and they should do it again in the summer, at least unless and until he becomes a permanent piece. And they will. Rose is an agent by trade. Never met a player discussion he didn’t want in on.
How can you say u like McBride better than grimes. There is no basis for that. Whatsoever. McBride shoots 16 percent from three. Grimes shoots forty percent. Grimes has a higher percent from three than McBride does from two lol. Grimes only plays fifteen minutes a game but he has a real shot at being named to one of the all rookie teams.
You are not in rebuild mide with no free money, Fournier, rose, trading away players you hyped like knox and more importantly with this.
He doesn’t like young players and us not a good coach for a rebuild
Right now, other than RJ, everyone in the organization should be available. Randle, IQ, Noel, Thibs, Perry, and Dolan. What’s truly upsetting is that Haliburton was available and they did nothing to my knowledge to acquire him. Second chance to get the player they needed at the position they’re desperate to fill and it goes unanswered. One would think Perry could provide one thing during his tenure with the Knicks and that’s reach out to his former team with multiple deals/options on the table.
If the reports that the Kings were interested in Randle are true, imagine if they’d had the chance to land Haliburton for some package involving Randle. And they missed it. Crazy.
This worries me. How were they reportedly kicking the tires on a Fox/Randle swap & let the team widely reported to be looking to make changes this year (Pacers) swoop in and grab the player no one thought was even available?
It shows a lack of aggression, which is twofold. Some will call it smart & measured (and it can be justified with certain logic) – but I’d also say “if y0u wait, you’re late”.
Sometimes you really do have to “ready / fire / aim” and see where the chips fall. Kinda like drafting best available (just fire) vs drafting for positional need (measured).
Coincidentally best available in the ’20 draft was Hali & Knicks logic’d their way into Toppin.
Considering they got Sabonis. I doubt they ever wanted Randle. Probably just listened to Knicks lol.
Wizards
Why not bring back Russ who was good for you last season?
Dinwiddie, Bertans and KCP for Russ and THT
Lakers aren’t going to say no. Dinwiddie is an upgrade, Bertans can atleast shoot and KCP is more reliable than THT. All moveable contracts and they keep their 1 first round pick.
Then to make things interesting maybe you go, Kuzma and Harrell for Harrison Barnes and Justin Holiday.
Leaving you with
1. Russ. A Holiday. Neto
2. Beal. THT
3. J Holiday. Avidja. Kispert
4. Barnes. Hachimura. Todd
5. Bryant. Gafford
Russ and Beal plus defence from Holiday and Barnes. Keep most the young guys and don’t lose any picks. Then if Beal does leave, you have Russ and Barnes on the books for 1 year each and that’s your only big contracts. But it’s your best chance at keeping him and building something strong
Look, the Knicks were 25-27 last year before a scorching hot 16-4 to end the season. Let’s say they went 10-10 instead and ended up in the play in tournament, but not the playoffs. Would they had made all these offseason moves, or stayed the course they preached about a patient build towards a consistent contender?
This FO claimed they were not going to make the mistakes past FO’s did, but they did exactly that based on a 20 game sample.
