The Lakers are feeling urgency to make a move prior to the trade deadline to try to get their season back on track, writes Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
According to McMenamin, the team’s latest loss – to the defending champion Bucks – on Tuesday, led to the “uneasy admission” in the locker room that the current roster just isn’t working. Sources tell ESPN that standing pat at the deadline and hoping for the best isn’t viewed as a viable option by Lakers players.
After the game, star forward LeBron James acknowledged that there’s a significant gap between the Lakers and a serious title contender like Milwaukee.
“It tells me we ain’t on their level,” James said, per McMenamin. “I mean, I could have told you that before the game. … Obviously you always kind of use games to see where you are at that moment. But we know where we are at this moment: sitting at a couple, few games under .500. Haven’t played the basketball that we’d like to play.”
As Bill Oram of The Athletic writes, James offered a clear answer when asked if he thought the current roster was capable of reaching the Bucks’ level: “Do I think we can reach the level where Milwaukee is right now? Um, no. Is that what you wanted to hear? No.”
While the Lakers may feel more compelled than ever to shake up their roster at the deadline, their ability to do so will be limited due to their lack of valuable trade chips.
Here’s more on the Lakers:
- For the third time this season, Russell Westbrook was benched during crunch-time minutes on Tuesday. Asked after the game about what he had to do to earn a consistent spot in L.A.’s closing lineups, Westbrook rejected the premise of the question, per McMenamin. “I shouldn’t have to hit any benchmark, to be honest,” Westbrook said. “I’ve put a lot of work and I’ve got a lot of respect in this game. I don’t got to hit a benchmark, or I shouldn’t have to. I’ve earned a right to be in closing lineups.”
- One Lakers staffer who had reservations about the Westbrook trade when the team made the deal in the offseason told Oram, “I didn’t think it would be this bad.”
- Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said on Tuesday that the team remains hopeful Kendrick Nunn will be able to play this season, but acknowledged that the point guard is unlikely to suit up until at least March, per Kyle Goon of the Southern California News Group. Nunn, who is considered one of L.A.’s only trade chips, hasn’t played at all this season due to a right knee injury.
I don’t understand why they don’t sign Jabari Parker. He’s not the solution but he may help.
lmao what? jabari was always a garbage defender. they dont need more scorers
They might make a move like that after the deadline. See who’s available out there. But before Thursday they have to look at the trade options first, though for the Lakers in particular the options may not be many.
Speaking of Jabari Parker, isn’t he horrible on defense? Lakers already are not that great on that side of the ball, so bringing in a fellow like Parker May not be wise
Maybe if they took any looks at the lineups they should have been using, they wouldnt be as bad, but I would also say that maybe if they didnt add so many extra guards and bigs they didnt need, and get rid of Gasol for no reason, they’d be in a better spot as well
Last night was embarrassing. I wonder if they can get anything for Westbrook. He’s broken.
If they part with that first round pick in ’27, Westbrook for Wall could probably happen. Beyond that, I can’t imagine there’s anything else out there to do with Westbrook.
If that’s the only deal they can make, I’d do it. Aside from injury issues, Wall is younger, can at least shoot, and can’t play any worse on both ends of the floor than Westbrook has. Maybe he’s healthy and hungry for a chance. That could help.
I agree with you on Wall. He’s not what he was, and the contract is too much for what he is, but he gives you something on the court. He’d be a way better fit in LA than Russ.
I think the Lakers may be looking ahead though and realizing that could be a lottery pick. LeBron will be retired, AD will probably be gone by then…
Tough to give up a lottery pick in a bad contract swap, but I’d do it.
Appalachian Outlaw I agree with you 100% but the Lakers can’t keep giving away first round picks. That is shooting themselves in the foot but I guess LeBron James doesn’t care. He’ll be in Cleveland in the next year or two and won’t feel the pain of the Lakers poor decisions.
I don’t disagree on the pick thing entirely, but it’s LA. The Lakers haven’t traditionally been patient enough to build through the draft. They are perpetually “win-now”, even when they aren’t built for it. So I’m trying to look at it from their mindset.
In another market -maybe any other market- I’d never do it.
If Westbrook and Tucker were Warriors, it’s easy to make a good trade
Lakers are not able to trade them to upgrade
Lakers are doomed
How do you figure if Westbrook was a Warrior it’d be different? Or are you talking about attaching assets like picks, Wiggins or Wiseman? I don’t follow.
That is what he must mean. To trade Westbrook you are going to need to attach draft picks or other players. Westbrook is dead weight because of his contract.
They don’t have any valuable assets that any team would want. Traded away most of their draft picks near term in the AD deal. Have nothing but aging overpaid stars that no one wants or young guys that can’t show if they’re worth a darn bc the aging overpaid guys get all the playing time.
I think they’re stuck as they are….yeah they can make a deal for a fringe player but nothing that is going to move the needle or make that team any better.
It’s pretty obvious they are trying to piss Russell off so he declines his player option. Hope he accepts it though, Lakers deserve this headache.
Honestly, they could be, but I don’t think they can make him mad. Russ seems really chill. He’s awful as a player, but he seems like a good dude. I think he’ll roll with whatever and collect that check.
I know I’d sit on the end of a bench for 40m and never say a peep. Lol.
Russell is smart enough to know that $47 million next season will not be there in free agency so he will pick up that option and he wants to play in LA. Lakers will need to buy it out if they want him gone. which still handicap the team.
lol lakers will just sign all the washed vets from the buyouts. they should just pull the trigger on AD if they really wanna save their season. maybe boston could give them Smart,Richardson,Horford,Grant
I’m all for big splashes like that. I think it’s a good call. If the Lakers don’t get it done this season then deal Anthony Davis while you can and rebuild. Pretty sure that’s not favored by Lakers fans but I like big moves. I like change.
Thing is I would want younger guys who are better than your 4 listed. Maybe two first-round picks that won’t be super late in the first round, and 2 players.., one young stud in the making, and another starter type.
I like the idea of trading Ad, but do it now before he breaks again! What use is he when he’s injured in 2 weeks. Look at the price teams have paid for stars in the last few years. He could net a lot….but Rob would probably mess it up.
I think Dikembe Mutombo should come out of retirement, he would help the Lakers get back on track.
I think they should have brought back Jerry West as a consultant. But, you know, Jeannie doesn’t think of West as a top 5 great Laker because Phil lol lol lol was more important.
We love this team but the front office is garbage
Rob trying to buy himself another year as GM. He’s been a total disaster so far. The only great acquisitions were the two superstars who INSISTED on coming to LA.
We Laker fans need to stop pretending this guy is any good.
LAL should not move their 2027 1st. In part, because a pick that remote will yield only a fraction of the value a current pick will. Plus, it would need to be traded virtually unprotected to have even that value.
The impacts of the AD trade and its tentacles wash out in 2025 (its when NOP’s claim on their 1st rounders, and AD’s extension, end – with LBJ almost certainly gone by then if not before). If they need to borrow against the future for this year or next, then try and do it by taking on salary in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 years. They’d be giving up cap space that can’t – alone – jump start a rebuild, since they don’t have their picks, while preserving their post 2025 rebuild assets.
probably hanging on to the draft pick because it will be a lottery pick in 2027. Lebron will be retired or leave. AD will be injured and they will have not much in stars. So the 2027 pick should be a good pick.
You’re right. Teams discount future value of picks for each year out they are. For 2027 pick that’s probably half the trade value of a 2022 pick.
The 27 1st should not be traded this year Imo
There is No trade Imo that can salvage this year or really next. Simply not enough assets and Russ is TOO sunk
Id like to move Tht for a contract that expires after next year to get away from Tht’s option year (Ex Terrance Ross (This doesn’t make them that much better just frees up 24′ better ) I see Tht as a Bust
Really at this point we should be hanging our hat on 24 if LeBron is open to staying (cheapish). Great free agency that year, loads of open cap which actually plays well out here
I doubt Jeanie will be able to survive the sh*t storm that ensues this summer tho when we get eliminated, it will get ugly and twisted in the newspapers and she will probably feel its make or break to deal RW at a loss…it will be a mistake if she does. She made this bed now lie in it the next 1.5 yrs and hopefully use it as a learning tool for the future. 24 can be bright, exciting and provide hope, she just has to value it today rather than trying to dig out of a hole thats too deep to begin with. I have a lot of doubts she will and the word urgency in this title scares me a tad
The Lakers are too old to move.
+1
Russ, THT and the first for Heild, Thompson and Warren.
Pacers may like THT for their rebuild and getting a future first. Russ ain’t ideal at all but his deal expires end of next season so it’s not that long.
Get a couple assets for the future and have to take back Russ.
Lakers would look great
1. Bron. Bradley
2. Monk. Heild
3. Warren. Ariza
4. AD. Melo
5. Thompson. Howard
Pacers should trade Brogdan for Randle in the offseason
1. Russ. McConell
2. Haliburton. Duarte.
3. Craig. THT. Stephenson
4. Randle. Jackson. Brissett
5. Turner. Bitadze
and then lindell wiggington from the bucks, wala, 18-19 iowa state cyclones.
Lebron wanted this, he wanted Westbrook and a team made up of his old buddies. Now he and the Lakers future gets to reap the spoiled fruit. They mortgaged the future for AD who’s been injury prone the majority of his career BARELY got one championship out of it instead of keeping the young talent they had like Engram, Clarkson, Hart, etc and building a long term successful franchise to appease Lebron. It’s gonna be a longtime before the Lakers can course correct and be a legitimate contender. I called this the second they got Westbrick and I couldn’t be happier to see them sink.
Go Celtics!
I agree, they should have worked up to winning a championship instead of just plain ole winning a championship
I think I’m the best all time . You
But first I need this day off and that day off. When the lights are bright ….I’m going take today off . I need to rest . Dunk contest oh no to many people watching, if I mess up I’m toast. My legacy stained sooooo I won’t do that . I need to look best as possible in every second. Ref that was a foul . Cry waaa. I need more all stars in my team again. That’s how a goat thinks
Oh and I’ll flop on this play
